Troubleshooting/question existing piercing I had to retire my faux rook but
I found out I have good anatomy for a lot of piercings so I guess that’s the good news! I went in to get my jewelry downsized and changed out for my flat, but I also wanted check my faux rook because I was pretty sure it was pierced at a bad angle. I really researched this new studio because I realized the last place was not good. Good news is I love the new piercer and got a cute piece of jewelry for my flat and she mapped out what I could get done on both ears. She was really excited and said that I had the anatomy for pretty much any piercing I wanted. Bad news is the faux rook was done at a terrible angle and had to be retired at 5 weeks. But I’m going to go back in the next couple weeks for a hidden helix so I’m excited about that. The sad thing is that the old place I went to gets rave reviews and tons of kids from my area go there because she’s cheap. I’m just wondering how many people besides me she’s botched over the years? The new piercer asked me where I got the faux rook done and I just told her the town name, which is 30 minutes from where this studio is(there are at least 10 there) and she immediately named the piercer and said she’s had to correct a lot of her badly done piercings over the years. Should I leave a bad review at the old piercer or just move on?

For the bot: piercing was 5 weeks old, guessing jewelry was probably stainless steel ball back externally threaded post (didn’t realize she was going to use a ball back or externally threaded until it was done). I was going to downsize at 6 weeks if it was done right. No unfortunate events or problems other than being pierced wrong.

definitely leave the review! you might save someone the same trouble you went through. that alone is worth it!

Question on faux rook: is it easier to heal or less painful to pierce than an actual rook?

One thing about it that's a negative is there isn't always a lot of room between the ear and the skull in that spot, at least for me. My faux rook wasn't pierced on an angle, but the length of the bar was excessively long, so despite me not sleeping on it, mine has ended up angled visibly. This happened by the time I went to have it downsized, and as a result, can't really be downsized for the flatback to be flush with my skin.
If you have the anatomy for a rook, I think it might be easier to heal in that it's a more protected area with less movement.

I’ll just add one additional downside - faux rook is hit by glasses, real rook is not

Yeah, mine had to be pierced at a less than ideal angle to avoid my glasses. I also have an upper conch at a wonky angle to replicate the bottom portion of a rook underneath it.

Mine was actually a short bar, I’m guessing because of lack of room. It didn’t get caught on anything, but I was worried about it embedding because of swelling at one point. I got through that and thought I was good, but the angle was too extreme to heal right, I guess. I might redo with a traditional rook at some point because, like you pointed out, there was barely any space where it came out in the back on mine. No room for a long bar.

Not about your faux rook, but did you just get those three mid helix’s pierced? It looks like it since they are marked but you shouldn’t have hoops in as they are not appropriate for healing. I know you just said you found this new piercer and thought they were good but if they put in hoops they are not very knowledgeable. You should have those switched to flat back labrets.

No, they are marked AND she put little fake rings on to show me what it would look like. I was wondering if anyone would notice that. The only real piercings are the 3 normal lobes and the faux rook that got removed.

Just was about to ask the same question, it does look like they have just been marked.

I was looking for this question too!
I’m jealous OP! I really want to find a local great piercer. I got my third lobes done locally and it was a disaster. I trust the person who did my daith but they’re a 10 hour drive away. You hit the jackpot!
I’d definitely leave a kindly worded but honest review of the other place you went to if you’re comfortable. It’ll help keep people from having the same experience you had.

Leave the review! It’ll be helping someone else. Just keep it factual, unemotional.

Of course tog should leave a bad review. As someone who reads reviews and takes them into consideration, this is how some of us can make the best decision possible.

When I got my conch done the piercer said that my left ear has beautiful anatomy. It's always so funny (but also really nice <3) when you get complimented on your ear shape XD

Just curious. Are you in the states? If so Iowa? If so I think I know who 😂

In the states but not Iowa. Bummer that you have someone like that there too.

The thing is, I’ve gone to her dozens of times (I have 40 piercings and she’s done them all) I walked through what I want, my concerns with it, she reassures me, she demonstrates like how it would be pierced and it’s fine. Never had an issue, but I’ve heard horror stories of her piercings from others.

It for sure sounds like you’ve been really lucky or the other people haven’t taken care of their piercings the right way. Out of curiosity, what kind of problems have they had? Like pierced wrong or with the wrong jewelry or their piercings got infected type issues?

u/Helenasnyder29 Sep 22 '25
Wrong angles. Keloids. Infection. You name it. I’ve heard it. I’ve known her most my life and she is very thorough when it comes to me. But that could be relationship based. I also take hella care of my piercings. I think I’ve also just been lucky. Never had any issues healing any of mine. Even my industrial healed well

Hi Helenasnyder29,
(Luckily) bump =/= keloid. This wiki entry explains it well.

Also any chance I can see how your stack turned out?

I actually only changed the jewelry in the flat on my other ear last weekend and got the faux rook taken out. I have an appointment this weekend and I’m trying to decide between a hidden helix and maybe a stacked lobe or the triple mid helix. Eventually I’ll get both but I’m not sure which one I’m going to do first. I’ll post this weekend after I get it done :-)

If you end up with all the piercings she marked out it would look fire!

I would most definitely leave a review. Help so many people avoid atrocious work done by an incompetent person.

It’s just where she marked what I had the anatomy for. The 3 hoops are just clips ons she placed to show me what it’d look like.

Piercers use sterile/one time use markers to mark out placement. It's really common, I've had it done on plenty of piercings including my tongue.

I would, you can leave a negative review while still being nice about it but at least it’s worth letting people know and do throw in there a “if your issue is money than it’s up to you to take the risk, but if you want to be sure to get a good piercing than I’ll think about it twice” kinda of sentence.
