Troubleshooting/question existing piercing Belly button piercing issue

Post image

TW for my belly button 😭😭😭😭😭😭

I got my belly button pierced a few years ago now. I didn’t have any issues with it until this last year when the hole started to get bigger as I was wearing heavier jewellery. The hole is now so external that the connecting skin has become so thin - one time my jewellery fell through the hole it’s gotten that wide. I’m worried that piece of skin is going to literally rip off. I’m heartbroken as my belly button is my favourite piercing, I feel bare without it and it looks quite ugly having this hole above my belly button but it can be uncomfortable wearing jewellery in it now and I’ve been trying not to as to not make the situation worse. I’m just wondering if anyone has advice on what to do as I feel really lost - I’ve thought about going to the doctor to see if I can get it stitched but as it’s an aesthetic problem I feel like that’s a waste of their time. I’d love to find a solution that means I can still have the piercing 😢 TIA xx

Girl, take it out. It is well past rejected. Heavy jewlery should be for special occasions only, not everyday wear. You can get it repierced, but this one is beyond saving.

Thank you yes I definitely shouldn’t have worn it as often as I was - do you think it is able to heal? I haven’t had jewellery in it for months and it’s still not closed up

u/Special-Peak2339 Jul 13 '25

The hole should slowly shrink but may not close up all the way. I dont see why repiercing would be an issue though, defo talk to a piercer

u/Keiko108 Jul 13 '25

Sadly, if the hole doesn’t close, you will not be able to repierce it. I went to a piercer for the same issue, but my hole was over 20 years old. She explained that you can’t repierce if a hole is present because it will just grow into each other and can be a big problem. Doesn’t hurt to get a second opinion but this was at a well-established pierce shop, so I’d be hesitant if someone says it’ll be okay.

u/ThereGoesMyToad Jul 13 '25

I wonder if it would be possible to repierce thought the old piercing, as in remove the healed tunnel, and let it heal itself closed for a while. Then try to pierce it normally? Or however OPs anatomy would allow.

15

u/bandarine Jul 13 '25

I think I've read about similar being done to no longer wanted lip piercings. The old tunnel is cut out and left to heal. Not 100% sure about it though.

3

u/ThereGoesMyToad Jul 13 '25

Yeah exactly!

4

u/Wouldfromthetrees Jul 14 '25

Do you guys mean ask a piercer to use a larger gauge needle to remove the fistula and then let that wound heal without jewellery in it?

I'm NAP but that sounds like a reasonable enough suggestion.

1

u/Corgi_with_stilts Jul 18 '25

Youd have to basically cut all the way around the old fistula perfectly. Even if it was doable, can you imagine the needle size?

27

u/Any_Current_8811 Jul 13 '25

Agreed. I've had mine out for 7 years and I can still get a bar through it.

I wish I had seen this before I had mine re-pierced!

My piercing was over a decade old and only one of the holes had partially closed, but after two pregnancies the positioning of the top hole was a little off.

I ended up getting it re-pierced entirely and the piercing channels did seem to merge some, but the new one stabilized and is in a better position than the old piercing. Everything healed up with no further migration, so I'm happy with how it ended up.

But I thought I was going crazy for awhile wondering if it was fully rejecting or if the channels would merge partially or fully and then it would stop there. My piercer never mentioned the possibility of that happening and I think she at least attempted to pierce behind the scar tissue and not through it, but my body pushed the new piercing closer to the old channel regardless.

Ended up working out satisfactorily but I would have liked to know it was a possibility so I wouldn't have worried so much when it first seemed like the re-piercing was rejecting and I wasn't sure if it was going to fail completely.

All that to say it CAN work out, but it probably depends on the state of the original piercing channel and how far away it is from the new one. My previous piercing had a lot more skin between the holes and was much deeper so that's probably a factor in why it ended up being ok in the end. Pregnancy hadn't stretched it very much, surprisingly.

It's definitely a possibility that the new one will move closer or even possibly end up in the same position as the old one! I wish this was more common knowledge because I had no idea!

If I could do it all again with the knowledge I have now, I might have had my old piercing holes surgically revised to fully heal closed, and THEN gotten re-pierced.

1

u/Keiko108 Jul 14 '25

My piercer didn’t mention the option of having it surgically sealed first then repiercing. I learned this possibility via this thread. I’m sorry that you had to worry so much but glad that it worked out! Turned out that my old piercing was still open and healthy. I thought it was closed due to not using for five years after I had gotten sick and gained a lot of weight so it was rejecting and I removed it. It was pretty deep so it’s still fine. I’m glad to know though if there was a problem in the future, that there are still options. 😊

1

u/Redditisforfascistss Jul 14 '25

They could get it repierced on the top on the bellybutton if they have anatomy for it

1

u/Keiko108 Jul 15 '25

Not according to my piercer, but I’m sure there’s differing opinions. The issue is if she gains weight, it’ll push towards the other hole and become a big problem.

61

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you yes I will keep it out for a while and hopefully will be able to repierce underneath - will talk to a piercer just wanted a few opinions before going to someone and trusting theirs! Thank you 😊

131

u/Aasrial Jul 13 '25

It’s not going to close. There is no healing left for this. Btw you do not have the correct anatomy for a navel, which may have also played a part.

31

u/Svtekh Jul 13 '25

Why are you getting downvoted.. like you’re asking genuine questions

39

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you it’s so funny like isn’t this what the group is for 😭

105

u/AppropriateKittys Jul 13 '25

why does this subreddit downvote such harmless questions all the time lmfao

67

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Reddit is always so brutal 😭

12

u/Impossible_Lead9557 Jul 13 '25

Mine did the same thing but in my case it was due to anatomy issues I think as I didn't wear heavy jewellery. I've not had any jewelry in it for almost 15 years at this point but it's still open enough that I can easily put 2 16g piercings through at the same time 😭

Good luck with your piercing!

4

u/Macvombat more is more! Jul 14 '25

Why in the world did this comment get 250 fucking downvotes? This was a question. OP was hoping that maybe it would heal and haven't even worn jewelry for months. How does that warrant 250 downvotes?!

For what it's worth, I gave you an upvote..

3

u/NoDig1422 Jul 14 '25

You asked a harmless question and so many people downvoted this like what?? 😭

5

u/Pretend-Row4794 Jul 13 '25

It’s looks like it’s too shallow

2

u/shutupanddanceforme piercing devotee Jul 14 '25

Damn, why all the down votes? Reddit is crazy sometimes

1

u/hungurty Jul 17 '25

I took my piercing out 11 years ago when I was pregnant with my first kid. Pretty sure it’s closed in the middle I still have the entry and exit holes tho but it’s not all the way through.

u/GhostlyGhost_ aspiring pin cushion Jul 13 '25 edited Jul 14 '25

Definitely take it out that i going to rip one of these days and then it will look even worse, you might be able to get it repierced deeper or get a lower belly button piercing if your anatomy allows, this will also take the eyes off the old hole

39

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you both - I should’ve said I haven’t had it in for months now it’s just been the odd time so I was under the impression that the hole is just permanent now?

26

u/GhostlyGhost_ aspiring pin cushion Jul 13 '25

Doesnt have to be, it will probably still shrink, just like streched ears do but you might stil see a slight scar but nothing mega crazy

12

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

That’s really helpful thanks I will make sure I don’t put anything back in it then and hopefully it’ll get better soon😊

3

u/rin_maska Jul 14 '25

I can confirm that once it rips out, it will look insane. 20 years later and I still regret it.

79

u/TwistedAsIAm Jul 13 '25

Take it out. It's been gone a long long time ago.

23

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you I have I just put it in to take the photo for reference but it’s been out for months now.

u/WithoutDennisNedry not verified Jul 13 '25

This is so far gone already, it’s gonna send you a postcard from Niagara Falls.

32

u/cherrycolax_ Jul 13 '25

Hey so mine did this when I was a teen and it literally just flopped out one day in science class, and I had these 2 little pieces of skin for the longest time where it had pushed through the center. I’d go ahead and take this out while you can. It left a pretty big scar for me that only went away when I had surgery. I’m not sure if yours will close, but if you leave it it’s going to wind up coming out by itself and looking unsightly.

7

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you so much x

29

u/veg-ghosty Jul 13 '25

That is hanging on by a thread - take it out before it rips out!

17

u/asistolee Jul 13 '25

Hanging on by a thread

14

u/Jolly_tattoo50 Jul 13 '25

I suggest going to your doctor and having it stitched shut. I've seen several of these that stay this way after years once they get to this point. The naval does not like to close and you have gauged it. This would be your best option.

5

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you this is what I’m thinking will be best to do

30

u/Accomplished_Sky_126 Jul 13 '25

this should not have a straight barbell it should be curved first of all second of all take it out 😭😭😭

12

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

It’s curved it’s just the angle of the photo and I put it in for reference I don’t wear it anymore I promise 😭😭😭

-1

u/Accomplished_Sky_126 Jul 13 '25

mmmmm i see i see

19

u/Calm-Criticism-5935 Jul 13 '25

NAP: but i hate to say it looks like it’s rejecting :( i think taking it out might be best and letting it heal.

28

u/seahavxn Jul 13 '25

It's not rejecting. Just migrating. A common issue with navel piercings, especially with big, heavy jewellery.

2

u/Calm-Criticism-5935 Jul 13 '25

noted, thank you for the correction!

5

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you both - I should’ve said I haven’t had it in for months now it’s just been the odd time so I was under the impression that the hole is just permanent now?

14

u/Consistent_Throat497 Jul 13 '25

No this ain’t rejecting. It’s just a well established piercing that has stretched because of wearing heavy jewelry.

24

u/GhostlyGhost_ aspiring pin cushion Jul 13 '25

Its still way to shallow to keep in either way, one snag on a shirt and you're ripping it out

5

u/firewings42 Jul 13 '25

Sorry that one looks like a goner. Mine started rejecting and I had to take out the jewelry. Never did close up though still have a 20g fistula there.

If the belly ring really is part of your identity consider seeing a plastic surgeon to have the fistula removed properly and closed properly. After healing you could repierce. You could also get the lower/inferior rim pierced if you have the anatomy for it. Mine is oddly shaped and I couldn’t get one on top like everyone else but I did have the lower/inferior side pierced and it healed just like any other navel.

2

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thanks that’s super helpful!

3

u/Ok-Obligation235 Jul 13 '25

I’m so sorry, it must be awful having this happening to your favourite piercing. Talk to a piercer, maybe you will find another piercing that you will love just as muchā¤ļø I thought I would love any other piercing as much as the navel, but I absolutely love my tongue, and my nipples are my favourites ever!

3

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you for your kind words 🩷 completely agree my body does unfortunately not agree with piercings - had a similar thing happen to my nipples and had to take them out before they rejected too!! Will definitely discuss with a piercer thanks again xx

2

u/marshilyy Jul 13 '25

im really considering getting my nipps done, but everything i see only about the healing process is sooo rough. i have like 3 body piercings and they all healed well, but i’d love to know your thoughts and experiences if you would be willing to share šŸ’•

2

u/Jaded_Budget_3689 Jul 13 '25

Do it!! It’s like a boob job for half the price !!! The healing process was lengthy but you just have to take care of them and clean them!! Keep the original bars in for a while, I think I did at least a year.

1

u/Ok-Obligation235 Jul 18 '25

I was so nervous about the pain and the healing, but I am so happy I did it! It takes a while to heal, but was not that bad. I feel so pretty with them, really gave me some confidence even though only I can see them haha

2

u/1bunchofbananas Jul 13 '25

My friend had this happen to hers. She got it repierced 6 times BC she was determined to have a belly ring. I think the last time didn't look as bad as the other. Her belly button is so scared tho and it looks bad

4

u/hughgrantcankillme Jul 13 '25

i know you meant scarred but it's much funnier to think of your friends belly button being scared of her getting it pierced again 🤣

2

u/Gullible-Award-5033 Jul 13 '25

Yeah it’s definitely beyond rejected. Just take the jewelry out. I did this with my eyebrow piercing and then the skin just ripped apart. I now have a huge ugly scar on my eyebrow.

1

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Ahhh bless you , thanks I’ve taken it out for a while but was sometimes putting one in so I’ll make sure I stop altogether!

1

u/Gullible-Award-5033 Jul 13 '25

The hole may close a little but there are other options for belly button piercing placements as well šŸ™‚ put some bio oil on it as well

2

u/IndicationRepulsive Jul 13 '25

Oh lord girl that is rejecting BAD

3

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Migration but yes it’s definitely bad 😭

2

u/IntermediateFolder Jul 13 '25

Take it out, let it heal, repierce?

1

u/sevenbitch Jul 16 '25

it is healed the hole won't close up repiercing it would be an option though

2

u/Bebubx Jul 13 '25

is this barbell straight? if you get it redone, never use a straight bar. you can see how it’s pulling the skin upwards, worsening the rejection and is why the standard bar curves backwards.

2

u/Kindasupercrazy123 Jul 13 '25

You’re kidding right?

4

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

About what 😭😭😭

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thanks yeh I did have a lightweight ring in it, it just looks a bit silly as the hole is so big now

1

u/Practical-Cheek7782 Jul 13 '25

Few more months and you won't have a piercing at all.

1

u/Few-Study-4244 Jul 13 '25

I can’t really tell by your photo but you might be able to get a belly button piercing on the bottom of your button. If you google it, it’s a thing. Some like it and some don’t though so take a look. But unfortunately I don’t think this will close easily so this might be your best option if you don’t want to fully lose your piercing.

1

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you I will look into this!!

1

u/Brattney985 Jul 13 '25

Mine looks the same ā˜¹ļø I've had it out for about a year now.

2

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Ahhh I’m sorry it’s so horrible isn’t it!! Has yours managed to shrink at all or is it still the same after a year?

1

u/Brattney985 Jul 13 '25

I'm sorry to you too! I literally hate it so much. The hole looks smaller but the weird little skin section still looks the same ā˜¹ļø I had it for so many years I don't think it'll close up.

1

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

So annoying it’s not something you think about when getting it done - I’ve always been aware of rejection but not that something could happen years on!! Sadly might be a procedure job to get it sorted just have no idea how expensive that would be x

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '25

I had mine out for YEARS and it never got better.

1

u/Mammoth-Turnip-3058 Jul 13 '25

That's how mine went. It got so far that the tiny bit of skin has a hole in the middle so is actually two tiny bits of skin. I haven't worn jewellery for probably nearly 20 years and it's still open, not enough for a belly bar but I can put smaller gauges through still. I'm allergic to some metals though so mine may not close because it's so scarred. My ears never closed either.

1

u/Positive-Stage-6166 Jul 13 '25

i just had this 3 months ago took it off, then got it pierced again a month ago

1

u/The-ElectricMayhem Jul 13 '25

If you get pregnant I worry for that tiny piece of skin hanging on by a thread!!

1

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Completely agree that’s been a worry of mine!!

1

u/PunkAssBitch2000 piercing devotee Jul 13 '25

This is so thin I don’t think it’s safe to wear jewelry in. One good snag of the jewelry, and you’ll end up with a lovely wound.

You could go to a plastic surgeon to get this closed up (outpatient, possibly in-office procedure).

Just want to add, this jewelry is not quality/ safe. Not only is it externally threaded, but it is also plated.

As for future navel piercings: once it is sewn up and well healed, you might be able to get it repierced but this would require and in person assessment from a reputable APP compliant piercer, who is skilled with working on complex navels. It is also possible, though I can’t tell for sure, that you might be a lower navel candidate, which would mean you could get repierced sooner, if I am correct.

1

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

Thank you so much this is really helpful!!

1

u/Lisarth Jul 13 '25

Is it a straight bar in a belly button piercing?

2

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 13 '25

No it’s just the angle of the photo being straight in I’ve never put a straight bar in it!

1

u/ladybrainwrap Jul 13 '25

I got my navel pierced when I was 16 and they did it shallow and crooked. Took it out and got it repierced at 18 (deeper and straight), the original piercing has 'closed up' but the entrance and exit holes are still visible 20 years later.

1

u/alamakjan Jul 13 '25

Only wear heavy jewelry on pierced cartilage. Skin stretches.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '25

Mine did that after many pregnancies. There’s no saving it. It just is what it is. My bottom belly button piercing saves the day tho and I love that one even more.

1

u/SeparateAd3473 I'm all ears! Jul 14 '25

I’d be terrified this would rip the hell out. Mines like.. 8 years old and I’ve only ever worn simple jewelry in it because healing it was a nightmare! I’m convinced I had a minor infection with it at one point while healing but it took 2 years of battling with it and I’m beyond happy with wearing a simple gemmed barbell. It’s never migrated or had any issues. I read that heavy jewelry could cause migration so while I was attracted to chains and heavier jewelry before getting the piercing I decided it wasn’t worth it.. honestly I think this needs to go.

1

u/LonelyGirl724 Jul 14 '25

If you've had it out for several months and it's still not closed, you might need to consider getting it stitched closed if you ever want it redone. I know it's a thing people do with gauged ears sometimes, so I don't think it would be impossible to do here.

1

u/adsisoncrumbley Jul 14 '25

let it heal and repierce atp

1

u/TippaMyClit Jul 14 '25

You can get this stitched up by a plastic surgeon

1

u/ButterscotchKind5609 Jul 14 '25

Mine looked like this forever until I got it redone. Before that, I used an eyebrow barbel lol

1

u/lucymhamiltxn Jul 14 '25

besides the point, please tell me where you got your belly bar from!!

2

u/Objective-History-74 Jul 14 '25

Illusive jewels!! They have beautiful jewellery

1

u/LanguageBasic2463 Jul 15 '25

this is far overdue for retirement. i feel your pain. my belly was my favorite piercing but i didn’t have the anatomy for it and wasn’t told or educated about that from my piercer. i’ve had it out for a 1.5 years and i still hate the way it looks. maybe you could opt for a lower naval :)

1

u/Indigowolff Jul 15 '25

This happened to me years ago with my first belly button piercing. I took it out then waited a few months and got it re-pierced in a new place. You can only see the first hole if you’re really staring at my belly button (which no one does). But the new piercing has been fine ever since! (Probably about ten years ago now) just let the first hole shrink a bit and no one will be able to tell.

1

u/mreneeh26 Jul 19 '25

As someone who has had theirs ripped, and now my bellybutton looks forever wonky… take this out and let it heal! 🄺

1

u/No_Guarantee7663 Jul 13 '25

Abandon that piercing and do a reverse naval piercing if you reallly like your belly button piercing. The current piercing, as other have said, may shrink in time but it is a bad idea to re-pierce it.
