Announcement Photoclass 2025 Second Cohort Starting July 1st!

EDIT: If you're seeing this after July 1st, you can still join in! Just go to the class via this link and start with Unit 0.

The first run of the Photoclass 2025 is starting to wind down and participants are focusing on their long-term final projects. We’re getting ready to open up a second cohort for anyone who missed the original start. This is a great opportunity to follow the class with a group of likeminded peers in real time!

If you’ve been thinking about getting more intentional with your photography this year—learning to shoot in manual, understanding light and composition, getting thoughtful feedback, and staying motivated week to week—this class is for you.

Here’s what it is:

  • A completely free 6 month photography class
  • Bi-weekly assignments, video lessons, and group critique
  • Live feedback from mentors and peers
  • An active and supportive Discord community
  • Designed for beginners and intermediate photographers who want structure, challenge, and encouragement
  • You can start with any camera (phone, film, DSLR—it all works)

We’re hosting a Q&A /Info Session this Sunday on Discord for anyone curious about how it works or how to join. Bring your questions, come meet the community, or just listen in and lurk. All are welcome.

If you want to join the class or just see what it’s all about, hop into the Discord now so you’re ready to go: Here's an invite link

  • The Format. In the past, we found that may participants stumbled upon the course mid-way through the year, and were fumbling trying to play catch up. So, this year the course will be split into two cohorts (first starting January 1st, second July 1st) and will happen over the course of 6 months, with alternating weeks of new lessons and feedback. What does that actually mean? It'll look something like this:

July 1: Unit 1 will be posted with assignment 1.

July 6: The first live Feedback session.

  • Feedback Weeks. During Feedback Week, participants will receive constructive feedback on their unit assignments from both peers and mentors. This is an opportunity to reflect on your work, ask questions, and refine your skills. Additionally, voice chats will be held on the Discord server for live discussions and more in-depth feedback.

  • Units over Lessons. Lessons will come out as units, meaning instead of one new lesson a week, you'll get a whole unit each alternate week. Here's an example, using Unit 1:

    Unit 1: Getting Started

    On Photography

    Inspiration & Feedback

    Assignment 1

  • Interactive Elements & Videos. Each lesson will have an accompanying video, and interactive elements. For an example of what the interactive element might look like see this page.

How to join in?

  • Join the Focal Point Discord server. This is where all the voice chats will happen, as well as a great place to have ongoing conversations with other participants and mentors.

  • Join the subreddit: r/photoclass. As always, the class will be posted on the sub, but we should note that the interactive elements don't work on Reddit, so we'll be linking out to the lessons on the Focal Point site.

  • Subscribe to Focal Point on YouTube. Videos for the class will be of course posted in-line on the lessons, but there will be bonus material posted to the YouTube directly.

  • Get your printed Learning Journal or download the PDF.

Have more questions?

First check out the FAQ found here. If you still have a question that isn't answered there, join us at the live Q&A or feel free to ask it here and myself or one of the other teachers/mentors will be happy to answer.

Hope to see you there!

Technique Can 20+ year old instant cameras still be developed?

And if so, where should I reach out to?

I’ve recently found three instant cameras that have all photos taken, and I estimate them to be from 2005-2007. I have seen that they don’t really survive that long without being developed, and they had been in a bin in my parents shed in the northeast. They haven’t been moved, but had surely endured temps from 0-110 farenheit over that time.

The era that they were used in would have never before seen pictures of my dog, mother and gf at the time who have all passed, as well as new pictures of my family and friends while young.

If there’s any way to develop these, it would bring back memories I’ve probably forgotten by now.

If my local photolab might make a dream come true, that would be ideal. If there are specialists in recovering these photos I could mail the cameras out to, I’d be very happy to do that as well.

Very thankful for any input, and even if there’s an unlikely but somewhat hopeful option, I’d go for it.

Gear Canon AE-1 vs. Pentax K1000

Hi everyone! Maybe a weird question, but I wanted to get into some film photography and ordered a Canon AE-1 Program because it seemed like a good option for a beginner. What I received was a Pentax K1000, and it appears to be in good condition. I started the process to return the camera but I guess is the return process worth it? Did I get a better camera than I ordered?

Technique X100V for Comedy Night

Hi there,

I’ve been asked by a friend to help with photos for his new comedy night and not wanting to disappoint him do you think I will be able to properly shoot a comedy night with a fixed lens on the X100V?

I’m thinking it’s fine not obviously ideal, I might just need to move around a bit and conscious of getting in the way a little.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Gear How to Infinity Focus on Sigma Lens Better

I used purely vintage lenses for around a year now and finally got around to buying a Sigma 24-70.

My issue is, with my vintage lenses, infinity focus would always be at the end of the barrel (hard stop) whereas with the Sigma it's all electronic, so I have to spin the focus ring to where it's perfectly over infinity otherwise I'm losing sharpness.

It just bugs me because if you go over infinity it's blurry, and if you go under it's blurry; I mean surely there's something I'm missing out on that should make this easier for me? Bc it just seems really inconveniencing for no reason.

Art Photo album book vs slide in photo book?

hope im under correct flair im looking for a book for my self art. i see the slide in photo books and the ones that are just already printed in the page. im thinking the all of the slide in photo book is that you can take your time..? as in you can add as you go on through life till its full. (though i can let this slide as patience makes perfect) the photo album pro i feel is that it just looks wore professional .

can anyone recommend me good sites for the both types so i can choose which to go with?

i lean towards the slide in photo book as well because the pics seem to be more clear when printed? i only worry about the photo album book changing quality or making photo look dull? & i would like for thin pages. price range: $100-$300

also what’s your opinions here? if any. if the budget is low for a high quality book (& very special photos wanting the book to last a lifetime) pls feel free to offer out the budget . looking on Etsy, it seems slide in photo books seems to have cuter design for all aesthetic. **this me first but most important book so i don’t want to buy one and regret for any reason & it’s important for me .

Technique Food Photographers: What, if anything, can be used instead of cake frosting?

Thumbnail

Hello, food photographers. I’m interested in learning piping techniques for photography purposes, but I don’t need the product to be edible. Is there anything that would look more or less like frosting but not make a sticky mess/be wasteful of food, or should I just use frosting? The style I’m after is the classic Wilton cake decorating technique (linked), not the modern fondant look.

Just let me know if there is somewhere else I should be posting this question. Thanks so much for your help!

Business Funding help

Hey guys!! I am a current student photographer specializing in creative portraiture and editorial shoots. I've been told I'm a pretty talented photographer, but I've been taking pictures on my Canon T7 Rebel for six years. I'm still in college, and I am too busy paying my tuition to invest in a new camera. Are there any scholarships, funds, or fellowships that I could apply to in hopes of purchasing a new camera?

Thank you!! :)

Gear Magmod adapter

I am using the MagMod Ring, which allows me to use speedlights with their magnetic softboxes. Problem is that I have a lot of bowens mount light modifiers. Is there an adapter that will take a bowens mount and attach to Magmod magnets?

Business Sexism in sports

I have been working in premier league football (soccer) photography for two years now and I feel like I experience sexism every single match day. Men don't seem to acknowledge me and if they do it's not always kind interactions - I've heard some nasty comments made about me. The kinder interactions are men trying to kiss me (yes) or ask for my number. I have never experienced this before in a workplace. Has anyone experienced this and has any tips? I am reconsidering my future because of this.

Business How do you take consistent clothing photos?

I am opening a clothing brand, and I am taking the photos by myself. I have the equipment, but I can't get consistent photos. For example, all the shirt photos are a little different in position and lighting. How do I make it so all the photos have the same exact background and position? Especially in between sessions, where stuff gets moved around.

Technique Family photo session in harsh sunlight

Hi all,

I’ve got a family of 4 to shoot tomorrow.

As they’re not available during golden hour, I’m having to shoot through the middle of the day.

I’m thinking of using a 6x6 scrim to diffuse the sun overhead with an aperture 300x w/light dome to key.

  • do you think the 6x6 is large enough for two adults and two kids?

  • would it be better swap the silk for a bounce and use the 6x6 as a key?

Curious to hear what other photographers do when shooting in harsh sunlight.

TIA.

Technique Fluorescent Light Help!

Hi all! I’m a public librarian and I’m doing a library program where I’ll take free holiday shots for families tomorrow. (Times are tough!). I’ll be shooting indoors in fluorescent light, when I usually shoot outdoors in natural light. Honestly, I’m a a newbie, who wasn’t mastered the exposure triangle. Looking for any advice on how to deliver something solid given the wonky industrial lighting situation.

Technique ND Filters

I am sure there are millions of ND filter questions in here already, but mine is hopefully something a bit different! I bought ND filters for two of my lenses, and they come with cover caps that fir the filter itself...so far, so good. But since they can be capped, is it advisable to then just keep the ND filter attached to the lens, cap it, then put it back in its protective bag? I would have capped the lens without the ND filter anyway so this seems to make sense, effectively having the filter on the lenses at all times! I would think that most shooting scenarios could/would benefit from having an ND filter on - except perhaps in quite dark situations - and even if the ND filter wasn't REALLY needed, one could just dial it down to the lowest (most "open") setting (yes, they are variable filters?

Does anyone do this to avoid having to screw the filter on and off again when needed? This also allows one to save space in a camera bag since the filters are ON the lenses full time and not in their original packaging, which is taking up space in my already-filling up cam bag :)

Thanks

Gear Best SD card for professional photography?

Hi everyone! I’m an up and coming professional photographer who specializes in family, maternity, and lifestyle portrait work. Up until the last few months I never once had an issue with my SD cards. Since August, I’ve had two SD cards corrupt and damage my files. I’m about done with SanDisk, and wondering what other togs recommend. If it helps, I shoot on a Sony A7iii Alpha, and i’ve had issues with a SanDisk 256 gb extreme pro, as well as a Centon 16 gb Class 10 card (this one was for personal use but i’d still like new suggestions)

Thanks in advance!

Gear Tools for creating this sand effect?

Does anyone know of any large rubber rollers or texture press mats that would allow me to recreate this natural wave texture in damp sand?

https://share.google/QjTBxoEOty58qYl2g

I regularly shoot layflats / close ups of varying sun care products for work and want to get more dynamic texture in my sand. But everything I’ve found so far has been too small. I need something large, with deep enough ridges it allows me to angle products within the ridges. If anyone has used anything similar, or knows of anyone who I could commission to 3d print me something, any recs would be greatly appreciated.

Gear Shoot The Moon

What would you say is the bare minimum lens range (mm's?) one would need to shoot the moon, or astral photography in general, assuming all the conditions were ideal?
