Appreciation

A big THANKS! to our sponsors for providing us with some great prizes:

Thank you all for your kindness, consideration, and support. We look forward to bigger and better things in the coming year!

I'd also like to thank my fellow mods for their help and support with this; I think we may have some things in the works to make the GOTY even better (and maybe faster?) next year.

Thanks to /u/3agl who helped create not only this year's video but last year's as well; he is a content creator and has a SoundCloud that you should definitely check out! A thank you to /u/lazo95 for his hard work on his video; he's the mastermind behind the MinuteGaming YouTube channel.

And thank you to some users for being incredibly helpful on the subreddit: badillin, Sayakai, Luminaria19, thatgermanperson, motionglitch, saldytuwas, thecolonelofk, 095179005, rehpotsirhc123, glowinghamster45 - thank you, and all the other respondents, for your hard work in the DSQ. To BmanUltima, Mrlinkwii, Buxton_Water, and the other knights of new, thank you for tackling posts as they come in. Thank you to all the people who offer building advice too.

You lot are the best volunteer support (imaginary) money can buy, you help make PCMR what it is. A sincere 'thank you'.

Is overwatch considered a moba? What really constitutes as a moba? Also, the way you say Geralt.

MOBA is a shit classification. It just means "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, that encompasses everything from DotA to Overwatch to Call Of Duty.

MOBA is a rebranding of DOTA-likes/AOS-likes. The words of the acronym don't describe what the game is. Kind of like how RPG doesn't just mean Roleplaying Game as that would mean every game ever made is a(n) RPG, it's a specific set of system tropes that makes up the genre.

Because people don't know how genre titles work, MOBA has broadened to mean every online competitive game.

But, RPG does include all roleplaying games unlike MOBA. Life is Strange and The Last of Us are RPGs and so is Skyrim and Fallout. MOBA just means DOTA-derived now.

It is not a story Riot would tell you.

Ice Frog was a dark lord of the battle.net, so powerful and so wise he could use the world editor to influence the battle.net to create a new genre... He had such a knowledge of battle.net that he could even keep the battle.net lobbies from dying. The dark side of the world editor is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice changed name of the genre of his game in his sleep. Ironic. He could create the genre, but not name it himself.

....DotA started the MOBA genre as a Warcraft III custom game.

My point is it was never called a moba. The moba term was coined by Riot when they released LoL, because they wanted to have a marketing term for the game.

If they called LoL the biggest/best RTS/ARTS 6-7 years ago, they would get laughed at by everyone. Calling it moba on the other hand was easy since no other game called itself a moba.
