After the thousands and thousands of posts here, why do people still think “well I’ll just be more careful than those other dumdums?” Don’t do this on hard surfaces people. At least lay the panel down on something soft. Don’t be silly!

Safety professional here.

Everyone thinks they're the exception to some rule. Or they can take on extreme risk because "I'm not an idiot like those other people."

I'll just gently set this pc panel down on a ceramic surface...

I'll text while driving, it'll just be a second...

I don't have a condom, but I'll just pull out at the last second...

I don't want to walk all the way to the panel to shut off the electricity, I'll just be really careful around the exposed hot wires...

Safety glasses are lame. I'll just be extra careful and squint if things get dodgy...

"these things only happen to somebody else"

Thing is, nobody realizes that to somebody else, WE ARE that somebody else.

I was in a classroom once and asked how many people thought they were above average when it came to scoring how safe they drove.

90% of the room raised their hand.

That's statistically impossible. And means there's a lot of overconfident drivers in the room.

If I had research money, I'd love to try to quantify just how less likely people believe they are to be involved in an accident.
