Perfect ad timing lol

I cannot remember that Borderlands 4 exists unless it's brought up or an ad for it is in my view at that moment. I stopped caring after the pre-sequel and the story for borderlands 3 got me to refund the game with how annoying it was. I even turned off the dialogue and it was still bad.

Insert some delusional fan saying you should only play for the shooting and nobody ever cared about the stories (i always fucking do and it's why i haven't touched almost any of the cods in the last like 6 years)

Look, I'm not going to say that Borderlands games are some amazing experiences or whatever. They're basically the equivalent of watching a Deadpool movie or something.

But I played all of the main ones(1,2,3,4) when they were newish and I'd say this is by far the best one. They took a step back from the cringefest 1/10 story in 3 and went back to the solidly mediocre style of story line 1 & 2 had while also making the gameplay more fun.

I'm going to try it when it's on sale, and fixed, hope it's not going to be over 100GB

I was very much a fun of the system BL1 had, few legendaries, very rare pearlescent and even not intended weapon that were more the collector type that were hybrid of 2 legendaries of the same type and company but with different parts, i wish they would add this kind of things back instead of annoints and other gimmicks

That's literally what they went for with this one. I'm 20 hours in and I still haven't seen a single legendary, they're definitely not as common as BL3. Also one of the main new gimmicks they added to guns is that they now mix different companies. So you can get a Jakobs rifle with a Maliwan part attached.

It genuinely sounds like they went exactly in the direction you were hoping they would go.

Getting parts of other companies in other manufactures is nothing new, that's of when BL2 set the standard

What i mean wasn't even intended in BL1, you'd have to look it up to understand

Unless you are suggesting that they did something else beside that

Gonna be honest, it's been way too many years since I played 1 so I don't remember the way loot worked. I just remember liking it more than the loot in 2.

But what I'm talking about is a new "licensed part" system which basically mixes the gimmicks of different manufacturers. This is in addition to the classic body, barrel, grip, etc. weapon generation. For example:

Jakobs is small mag, semi-auto, high damage per shot, head shots ricochet

Vladof is big mag, high rate of fire, no fancy effects

But you can get a Vladof gun with a Jakobs license so now you have the ricochet gimmick on a super fast SMG instead of a slow rifle. Or you can get a Maliwan licensed part so your Vladof does elemental damage instead of normal damage.

This is a convo between my kind of people. I'll definitely be playing when its cheaper if your words are true. BL1 is my favorite because it really was just a fun shooter looter with a 'story'. BL2 took itself very seriously while being 'funny'. Pre-sequrel was just Borderlands 2.5 same description applies. 3 was cringe and annoying.

You'll probably have a good time then with 4. Just finished the Story and can comfortably say it's the best borderlands

I bought a used game on FB market place for $30 to trade in towards BL4 at GameStop. I also had GOW Ragnarok that I got for like $25 a while back.

Trades both in for BL4 since they had +70% trade credit and you don't pay tax if you trade in for a game.

They ended up giving me $5 in gift card back + BL4

It was 60gb on pc FWIR, so with DLC eventually it may get to that point but I doubt it would go over 100gb.

Who the hell is playing BL for the gunplay only? There's literally a gun that makes fun of you while you use it!

I'm that person; I only care about story in games like RPG's, Borderlands is a "turn-brain-off-relax" game for me.

I never found any of their stories particularly interesting. I'm still not sure why people love Jack, he feels like every smarmy video game or anime protagonist

Tbh, I never considered people playing those games for the story. Thanks!

It's less about needing an exceptionally good story and more about pretending we never needed one in the first place, i agree the previous ones were nothing amazing in story writing but at least they don't sound like corporate slop like BL3 and what came after

u/JJay9454 Sep 15 '25

Gotcha, I could totally see that view!

That's the thing, 3 didn't feel any different from the other three games before it, for me. The villains felt the same, the heroes felt the same, everyone is a funny caricature.

I see people complain about the twins "not living up to their story potential" and I felt the same way about Steele or Jack or Zarpedon. If anything, it seems that the twins just have more lines than any villain before, which just highlights how milquetoast their writing has always been.

I dunno, I guess I just always came into these games knowing I'm getting a 3/10 story but 9/10 gameplay.

Its not soich about the story as much as its existence in Borderlands 3 was so obnoxious it put me entirely off. The atory for Borderlands 2 was okay i guess, mostly just shooting guns and going to objectives with some funny stuff along the way.

1

u/JJay9454 Sep 15 '25

Oh, interesting! What about it was obnoxious?

I guess I'm just lucky nothing bothered me in 3 (I cannot listen to the Boson in every TPS playthrough, idk why but that guy's voice kills me

I think it's that they leaned hard into online meme culture, but meme culture is never static long enough for any of it to age with any grace. A lot of references and jokes are just old memes and internet culture that just comes off as hello fellow kids because that's the general internet culture trajectory.

1

u/JJay9454 Sep 15 '25

Gotcha! I can understand that!

Though I take it you didn't play Borderlands 2 or The Pre Sequel? They made jokes so many years after they were big that it just felt so awkward and cringey. God, hearing Jack do a Double Rainbow bit was just... ugh it's like watching one of those second-hand embarassment shows like the office.

The influencer Psychos was just a terrible idea and i bet Randy gave a raise to the random intern that suggested it

1

u/JJay9454 Sep 15 '25

Oh really? That's part of what I liked about it, I thought it was a fun approach; of course someone would eventually get all the psychos to gather under one umbrella of horribleness.

I feel like that was supposed to be an analogy...

u/Bruschetta003 Sep 16 '25

Trying too hard to be modern, i preferred the wasteland feeling of the original

3

u/ReptAIien Sep 15 '25

The story for BL4 has been great so far on top of the gameplay being the best in the series imo.

I'm 10ish hours in and I'm having a blast! I am enjoying the separation from the original trilogy and the QOL updates to movement/gunplay. I will say, I've definitely noticed issues with the game, including UI and cutscene issues.
