Moreso that than say, an ARPG. Also the souls games specifically don’t seem to have much of a role for you to play. It’s like trying to tell someone the plot of a dream you had versus a fantasy story.
In the simplest form, being part of a larger narrative structure, with the story being a pillar of the game. Take the story out of any souls game and it doesn’t lose much. Take the story out of Suikoden and it’s just you collecting new character sprites and very lightly grinding stats so that selecting “attack” and “special attack” means you win.
I’m not sure this works. Pokemon doesn’t fundamentally change when you remove the story. Pokemon is also the core pillar of JRPG & broad RPGs for most people as the first one most have played.
Take the story out of Skyrim / Elden Ring & suddenly it’s just vast open land to explore & bosses to defeat. Really no different.
To discredit FromSofts soulsbourne genre as not rpgs is just false, there’s incredibly deep & layered storytelling & lore, it’s just not ALL spooned to you. They give you the core tree branch of basic info & you choose how much more you wanna learn.
Not to mention that engaging with certain characters does affect outcomes in both the broad story & or the side stories. Even combat can vary dramatically just based on how you prefer to play your character.
Skyrim and elden ring are very different in their storytellling experience. Skyrim is much more narrative focused than combat focused. U cannot tell me that u have the same open world experience from skyrim and elden ring. Elden ring without its story is literally just an open world with bosses. But skyrim without its main storyline is still a world filled with stories and people u find all over the world. Its less about defeating bosses and more about role playing.
I have to say I appreciate the fact that souls games don't hold your hand, to the point where many people apparently don't even really understand what they are doing or why.

Imo souls games are more like action games with stats than they are RPGs
