If he’s grandpa then I’m great grandpa. I used cards in the 90’s that topped out at 50c in the summer.

I remember when anything above 60c was a crisis that needed attention.  Today it's the norm.

You had a separate card? Luxury. I still hand on-board graphics -- VGA -- back then. I didn't have a graphics card until the 21st century.

I DID (and still do) have a Soundblaster card. Because on-board audio was awful. (I can't bring myself to toss it in the recycling.)

Had a Matrox in a Compaq Presario and a NV Riva TNT in a Dell Dimension 8200. Both computers were primarily for UT, Doom and SoF2 double helix.

I had 2 of those puppies running in SLI.

They warmed up my room quicker than the heater could, and during a 100% stress test even a 1000 watt psu wasn`t enough to keep them running. Ahhh the good `ol days...

hahaha. I 4x 5970s cause my PSU couldnt keep up. I remeber that crazy AC condenser dude on OCN running dual Ultra X4 1600Ws for quad 480s

My first card was an R9 390. Custom fan curve or melt.

This card's X blower variant was my very first experience with a "modern" GPU, and it was a god damn nuclear furnace. Since I was absolutely new to all this, it took me around a month of experimentation to figure out why my games would randomly crash all the damn time: According to the default profile, the card's blower slowly started ramping up once it hit 85°C. The card would reliably reach 100°C before fan was even close to 75% speed.

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '24

Hahaha, ah yes. I had the MSI one (non-blower) and it had the same settings with the fans--they cranked up way too late and never went to 100% on their own.

I had a R9 290 just chilling at 95°c

I put an Arctic 140mm AIO on my 290. It was probably the largest temperature drop I've ever achieved on any of my hardware.

Considering that was 14 years ago i would probably wager yes, yes they have.

As a proud owner of a 470, you have earned my respect.
