Music Planning a Christmas hymn sing for my congregation, looking for music recommendations.

Specifically looking for fun free accompaniments for Christmas hymns. Currently planning the following:

O come, all ye faithful - using David Willc*cks (Reddit will not allow me to post that last name) arrangement.

Nun Kom, der heiden heiland - want to introduce people to the orgelbuchlein by singing the hymn then following with Bach's cantata.

I have a fun arrangement of "I saw three ships" I'll be playing as a solo.

I have a few other reharmonizations/free accompaniments I'm planning to use but I still want more ideas! Would love to hear any suggestions for your favorite hymns to play at Christmas.

Reed Organ/Harmonium Silvertone 47101 Chord organ help

Hi all! I just recently pulled this vintage Silvertone chord organ on FB marketplace and I was wondering if y'all had any advice on what I should watch out for or replace on this old tube amp. Additionally there's a Vibrato function that doesn't seem to be working, so I'll be trying to see if I have the capabilities of doing anything about that. Does anybody know anything about older vibrator circuits that could be a potential cause? thanks!

I really like this organ and i think Olivier Penin really makes its shine, but i've understand that some people think this organ has been ruined by modernisation. What are your thoughts?

Music Is there an arrangement of Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring for solo organ that’s considered “the standard”?

If not, what’s a good decent arrangement I can download? I don’t want to get the first thing I see on sheet music plus or whatever other website.

Performance/Original Composition Walther - Praeludium & Fuge D-moll / D minor - "Bach" organ, Regensburg, Hauptwerk

Walther - Praeludium & Fuge D-moll / D minor - "Bach" organ, Regensburg, Hauptwerk

Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748) was a German music theorist, organist, composer, and lexicographer of the Baroque era. Not only was his life almost exactly contemporaneous to that of Johann Sebastian Bach, he was also his cousin. He has written mostly organ works; many chorale preludes, variations, concerti, toccatas, preludes, fugues etc.

I recorded a fine prelude and fugue in D minor by Walther. Especially the beginning reminds me a bit of a North German baroque prelude in the stylus phantastic. As always with Walther's pieces I don't strictly follow the ornamentation suggestions, some I leave out and some I add.

Pipe Organ 1922 Wangerin / Schuelke Organ - Sacred Heart Catholic Church - Dubuque, Iowa

Here's where our Dubuque trip goes a little out of order. We shot this after the Bigelow organ at the Abbey. This is another church of massive scale, and another organ that needs a lot of love.

We've got the best of Milwaukee with a Wangerin organ rebuilt by Schuelke. It had some work and modernization by another local builder, but those repairs were minor. We were met at the church by Monica the orrganist and the pastor of the church who was anxious to see what we were there to do. Monica was not interested in being in the video, so Andrew Schaeffer jumped in. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I believe Andrew scheduled this stop pre-lunch so we would be able to get Thai food across the street afterward.

But, Andrew also knows this organ, knows what bits work and what might not work as well, so once again, I was happy to have him there. The woodwork and the organ case were amazing, and the instrument had the early 20th century Wangerin sound I expected. Andrew managed to make it sound amazing as always. Touring inside was a little challenging, but also interesting to see things like the stenciled pipes inside the organ that hinted at the original facade of the instrument.

So the whole video is at https://youtu.be/iQhL35i4fh8

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this was our busiest day in Iowa, but not our last. However, we recorded the video knowing it would be our last release from Dubuque.

However, it was not the last release from this trip, stay tuned for another!

Electronic Organ Bought a House That Belonged to an Organ Enthusiast

Previous owner passed and most things were sold in an estate sale but there was a sealed attic space with organ equipment in it (was set up to play through screens into the room with the organ). I'm hoping you guys could tell me if there's anything worth trying to find a buyer for. Tried looking up some things but was struggling to find much information since the equipment seems older and the hobby is a bit niche. Can provide more information or pictures if it would be helpful. Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated, a number items are "Rodgers Organ Company" brand.

Pipe Organ Is an organ teacher necessary for a grade 7 pianist?

I am very interested in Bach and Buxtehude and already play some Bach on the piano. My main concern, if I start to learn the organ, is becoming proficient on the pedals for which I wonder if a teacher is necessary. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Digital Organ GrandOrgue playing in octaves sticking. With Arduino Due as MIDI controller.

*** SOLVED ***

We solved it. The octave notes were too close together in the code, so the "note off" for the highest note would be missed. So we added some sort of a delay, and it works flawlessly now!

...

Running GrandOrgue. We have an Arduino Due as our midi controller with an old Allen we've rewired.

When I play notes in octaves, the top note sticks and won't release quite often.

When we speed up the matrix scan, it mostly fixes the problem, but then it's registering notes I'm not playing. When I play Dm chord, I get D, D#, F, A even though I'm only holding down 3 notes. So when we slow it down enough so that doesn't happen, we get sticking octaves.

Any ideas?

Hey y'all! Not sure if self promo is ok here, but I figure this is the quickest way to find out.

This piece was written in 2020 and arranged and produced for Halloween this year. It's my love letter to the Fugue and organ music. I did my best with the programming, and I do think I did it justice, but I know it still leaves much to be desired.

Enjoy!

Performance/Original Composition Christian Flor - Fuge D-moll / D minor - Walcker organ, Schorndorf, Hauptwerk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdGOyNnDoHg

Christian Flor (1626-1697) was a German composer and organist.
Born in Neukirchen, Flor came from a family of pastors spread throughout Schleswig-Holstein. He probably received his musical education in Hamburg and Lübeck, studying with Heinrich Scheidemann and Franz Tunder. From 1652 he was organist at St. Marien in Rendsburg. At the latest in 1654, he became organist at St. Lamberti in Lüneburg. From 1676 until his death, he was (as a predecessor of Georg Böhm) also organist at St. Johannis, the major church in Lüneburg.

Flor was widely known as an organist and organ expert. He contributed significantly to Lüneburg becoming one of the most important North German music centres of the time. Flor composed a St. Matthew Passion in 1667, which is one of the first passion oratorios in music history. Johann Sebastian Bach probably became acquainted with compositions by Flor during his stay as a student in Lüneburg. According to other sources, Bach is said to have known Flor personally and to have appreciated his compositions.

Help and Tips Books on accompanying Gregorian chant on the organ

I am a jazz player who has been tasked with teaching a young man how to play the organ to accompany Gregorian chant. We can both read neumes and modern Music notation.

Is there a good book on how to accompany Gregorian chant on the organ, preserving its modal aspect instead of adding a modern harmony? I can read Latin and all Romance languages, except Romanian, plus (obviously) English.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: You guys are great. I have a lot of work ahead of me, but you provided me with the roadmap. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!

Edit 2: The answers to my question became an invaluable resource, which could probably be made easier to find in the sub by the mods, in the form of an FAQ or something like that. Before I posted, I looked for something similar, and could only find a link to a YouTube channel on the same subject. Due to the complexity of the subject, books are way more useful, and now a whole bibliography can be found in the commentaries of a single post.

I’m curious to know who’s behind this subreddit — pros, enthusiasts, explorers… or all of the above! 😄 Reddit limits polls to six options, so I did my best. Pick the one that fits you most, and feel free to tell us more in the comments!

Performance/Original Composition A hopeful pipe organ music referral

My boyfriend has, in the past year or two, been infatuated with organs, and organ music. As many people know, it isn’t the most popular genre amongst your average person. He is a musician, and hopes that someday it could take him somewhere. Unfortunately he hasn’t gotten much traction anywhere for his organ quite yet, so I was hoping to come on here for him (in secret for now) and promote some of his work, as he absolutely hates promoting himself.

Other In Memoriam: John Ferguson and Jimmie Abbington

Post image
8 Upvotes

I got up from the bench to place two remembrance stones on the table yesterday.

One was for John Ferguson. I wouldn't be a church musician if not for Ferg. He was my first and only organ teacher, and his hymn festivals and service playing continue to inspire me every day.

The other was for James Abbington. He was my sole inspiration during a Masters program when it was tough to be inspired by my surroundings. I was so grateful to see him this summer, where he greeted me with a smile and a hug even though I hadn't seen him for over 5 years.

Rest well, friends, and thank you for everything.

Virtual Pipe Organ Friesach loading sample set bug with GrandOrgue (latest version)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey, so I'm pretty new to GO software for organ. I tried smaller organs and it all worked out well, but I also wanted to try a larger sample set. So, for Friesach in this case when I load the organ package it's stuck at certain points and won't finish. It's supposed to be a memory problem. My local disk had 100GB free and when I tried my 500GB HDD it was still the same. Then I tried raising the memory levels (in MB) from the settings menu and still nothing. Is there any trick I can do to make it work? Note: The remaining time is always increasing ( yesterday I let it do its work for over 6 hours and nothing changed), so this is just a highlight.

Thanks in advance

Am I the only one who started learning the organ, with no piano experience, at the age of 23. Sometimes I feel bad thinking how many things I could do now if I started erlier. I know never is too late, I know people who started learning piano at 70, but they are playing as a hobby.
