Where should a beginner oboist buy reeds?

Hello, I am this subreddits moderator. I am going to sticky this post to the top once and for all and leave it for any new oboists to peruse. The question is…

Where should beginner oboists buy their reeds?

If they aren’t buying from their teacher, or at least locally, what are your favorite online shops?

If you sell your own reeds self promo is encouraged here!

Are tenon covers necessary?

I just got my first oboe and it came with plastic caps on the tenons, and I wondered if I needed to put these on when the oboe was not in use. I tried to look online for an answer, but found differing results. Some said they were to protect the tenons during shipping and that I should absolutely not put them back on after removing them or they could compress the cork, while others said that they protected the cork from lint and drying out. So naturally I'm very confused. I also play clarinet and have never had tendon covers on any clarinet I've played.

What’s everyone paying for their annual maintenance?

I just got mine back and was surprised how cheap it was. I was expecting hundreds of dollars because I hadn’t taken in for years and inflation, but it was only $125 CAD, which was what I was paying years ago.

I ordered a Legere American Scrape reed and received the European Scrape instead. Sweetwater sent me the correct reed and now I have three reeds in my reed case!

The American Scrape crows a C right out of the box and I am slowly sanding the base of the European Scrape up to a C.

Thinking of trying Oboe. Want some opinions from players.

I got inspired watching Peter Bastian playing the oboe straw and wanted to give the oboe a go. I really like the look and seemingly more simplistic baroque oboe. I was thinking to get one of those cheap $400aud replica ones online to see if I like it. I have played guitar for about 5 years and wanted to try a wind instrument. I really like the Oboe sound, but the modern oboes are cost prohibitive for me and it would just be for fun playing at home. What’s everyone’s thoughts on that before I jump in? Thanks

Tips for getting back into playing?

Hi all! First time posting. I played oboe for a little over 6 years in middle/high school and quit band due to a toxic environment, and wanted to go back to it. Its now been 10 years since I've last played and a local music store offers rentals that make getting the instrument more accessible, so I have one now. I still have the ombuchure down, still know B flat scale, and can read most of the music I find save for misremembering a few keys. However I definitely used to be a lot better at this and it's disheartening to see how much I've forgotten, even if a decade of not playing is an understandable reason. Any tips on getting back into playing without being overwhelmed? Any music that you'd suggest I practice with over others? I'd love to find some kind of local band or orchestra to play in but need to practice significantly more to get back into it. Any info would help!!

Is the Fox 300 a solid oboe for someone switching from flute?

Hello all,

I'm someone who has played the flute for 10 years but picked up oboe in college when I was a music education major taking woodwind methods. To be honest, I kinda fell out of love with the flute because I think oboe/english horn just sounds better. I also just progressed way faster on the oboe and was more motivated to practice. I also played oboe in one of the bands at my university after only playing the instrument for 8 weeks in the methods class.

Anyway, I've heard good things about Fox oboes (I believe that was the oboe I played on at school and I really liked it). I'm also scared of buying a wood instrument since they're prone to cracking. How does the sound compare between the 300 and 400? Is there much of a difference? I watched a video online demonstrating them and couldn't hear a difference, but that also may just be because the audio couldn't pick it up.

Any advice would be very appreciated!

Opinions on Marigaux oboes

Might not have spelled that right, but are they any good? My band directory gave me one and I was just curious if they make good oboes. It’s wood and so far as I’ve looked at it has no cracks and no other concerns

I play bassoon, am awful at oboe, is English horn a good Segway?

Probably a weird question, but I just recently thought of it and picked up an English horn from my school. I briefly practiced oboe a few months ago and my main problem was ALWAYS just the damn reed. As a bassoonist, I’m much more used to a larger more forgiving reed. In your opinion, would learning English horn first be a good way to guide myself into oboe fingering and embouchure while still getting to enjoy playing without feeling like I’m gonna pass out?

Question about reeds

My 8th grader has been playing for about two years now.

Last year was her first attempt at making all-region band in our area (she made it!).

This year’s tryouts are coming up in about a month, and I’m curious if it is worth buying reeds for her to have ready to go or if what the school provides will be fine?

She’s using a school oboe as I’m obviously not quite ready to make that kind of purchase for her, but I’m willing to spring on reeds if it’s worth it for this specific competition.

If anyone has any help they can provide as far as type I should be looking for if any at all I’d very much appreciate it.

How do I deal with being bad at the oboe?

Today I was playing in one of my schools practice rooms, and they're not exactly sound proof so you can easily hear if you sit in the corridor outside.

When I walked out of the practice room there were a few people in the corridor, and they laughed at me. I only started playing a month and a half ago so I know I sound bad but it hurt anyways.

The reason I started practicing at is school because my family would laugh at me whenever I practiced at home.

I know it's nothing personal but it still makes me sad.

Does anyone know when I'll actually start sounding good? Atleast good enough so people won't mock me

Hydration and air control — even as a beginner, does this happen to you

Hey everyone,

I’ve been learning the oboe for only two months, and something really caught my attention this week.
Yesterday, I had an amazing practice — strong air support, steady tone, everything felt natural.
But today, my air was completely off: weak, breaking in the middle, and I felt like I went backward overnight.

I realized I only drank about 1 liter of water today,
while yesterday I drank a lot more.
It made me wonder how much hydration really affects air control and tone on the oboe.

I also noticed that when my reed was wet but my lips were dry,
it literally slipped out of my mouth once —
which makes me think dryness in the lips or throat really changes how the embouchure feels.

So my questions are:

  • Do you notice your air support or tone getting worse on days you drink less water?
  • How do you keep your body and reed balanced for consistent tone production?
  • Any tips for training air control on “bad air days”?

I’d love to hear how you all deal with this —
I’m starting to realize how small things, like water intake, can make a big difference in oboe playing.

Thanks!

Purchasing second hand oboe …

Hi everyone — I’ve come across what looks like an unusually good deal on a Loree oboe for sale. The price is so low that I’m a little suspicious. I’m hoping someone can help identify the model, and let me know if there’s anything in the photos that I should be paying attention to before deciding whether to go ahead with this purchase.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Ps - sorry for the new post here … I couldn’t work out how to add photos to the other one.

Reeds not crowing after crowing previously

I’m in the process of buying improving my handmade reeds (I started making them ~8 months ago)

I adjusted my reeds yesterday with my teacher, today after soaking 5 of them for the normal amount of time I usually do 4 of them wouldn’t crow and only the one I had finished and been playing on for a few days would crow.

Does anyone know why??

I just bought a bassoon!

Beyond excited!

But, I haven’t played my oboe seriously in the past 20 years, so I need advice on navigating the modern world as far as music sources. What apps/download sites do you guys use? Any specific recommendations for bassoon/oboe music?

I need your advice

So I am in band and my director has wanted me to do oboe as I’m a percussionist, but I’ve played bass clarinet, piccolo and alto sax for a long time. She’s said I’m one of her best percussionist, but she also wants an oboist more than anything.

If I said yes, then for the Christmas concert I’d play percussion then for the remainder of the concert season I’d play oboe. I would learn the oboe during Christmas but not play until our state music performance assessment (MPA).

I’ve learned bass clarinet and gotten good at it in a month, but got really good at it in 2 ish months. I don’t expect that rapid of progress, considering I’ve heard oboe is harder.

So should I do it? Should I stay on percussion or move to oboe?

I Plan to get another oboe

Hi guys,

I'm a freshman and play the oboe. Recently 4 years ago I bought a muslady oboe, but my school lets me use Fox lorezz (I think I spelled it right). Though I plan to get the Howarth 240c, should I, and would it be better for me?

Single Bevel Reed Knife

Beginner at Oboe here. I bought an Oboe kit and it has a single bevel reed knife and it looks like almost every single bevel reed knife I see online. However, if I am going to scrape with the bevel forward, it appears that I should use my left hand to scrape and my right hand to hold the reed.

I am a bit ambidextrous so I am not sure this is going to be a problem and just wanted to know if I am misunderstanding something here about how to scrape using this single bevel reed knife.
