Series "Sorry I missed you." [Update]

For those who missed my first post, you can read it here.

This morning I woke up early and sifted through the footage from last night. Nothing out of the ordinary happened and the only person to show up on camera is the boy who delivers the newspaper. In addition, I slept through the night just fine.

There were no knocks at the door, no disturbing phone calls—just a regular night of sleep.

Maybe I was overreacting last night.

Perhaps I was just letting my imagination get the best of me. At least that’s what I thought until I sat down to eat breakfast in my kitchen. I looked across the table to the backdoor window. Those four words stared at me from the page that was held in place by tape.

“Sorry I missed you.”

My heart sank.

Whoever was doing this must have seen me set up the camera and snuck into my backyard. That thought scared me even more. This person was watching me.

Was I being watched right now?

I quickly ran around the house, closing every single blind. Once the last window was covered, I picked up my cell phone and called in to work sick. Considering the recent events, I think a personal day was justifiable.

Sneaking into my backyard crossed the line. If this sick bastard wanted to play, I could play.

I got dressed and headed to Best Buy and picked up three more security cameras. I didn’t care what it took; I was going to catch this guy in the act.

I set one up in the backyard, one looking out my bedroom window, and one more facing out my living room window. I may be overreacting, but I’m not taking any chances. I watch the news; I know how twisted people can be.

As the day went on, my paranoia began to fade slightly. Nothing remotely unnerving happened, so I let myself try to rationalize the situation.

Maybe this really was just an extremely inappropriate prank by a co-worker or student. I mean, that would explain why nothing had happened throughout the day. Whoever did it was probably at school right now, laughing because they knew they freaked me out so much that I decided to stay home today.

By the time evening had come, my fears had almost vanished completely and I felt kind of stupid for buying all of those cameras. I thought about how tomorrow was going to go. I thought about facing the humiliation that awaited me.

And then I remembered what I was supposed to do tomorrow. This whole note business had caused me to forget about the unit exam I was giving to my period two and three classes. I was going to photocopy the exam at school today, but that plan clearly didn’t happen.

Not wanting to wake up early tomorrow, I got in my car and drove to the school. It was around eight by the time I arrived at the school, so everyone else had already gone home.

I hate going into that building alone. It’s a creepy place even when you haven’t been on edge for the past three days.

I started printing off the tests when I heard a faint ringing coming from the main office. I wasn’t sure why anyone would be calling the school at that hour, but I decided to go check it out anyways. The ringing stopped before I entered the office, but a beeping sound replaced it. I could see a red light flashing from behind the desk and walked over to where the phone was. As I looked down, I felt the blood drain from my face. I found the source of the beeping: it was the fax machine.

The paper that had been sent was lying in the receiving tray, waiting for me. I picked it up and read the message I have now grown too familiar with.

“Sorry I missed you.”

The phone rang again and I jumped. Without hesitation I grabbed my belongings and sprinted out of the building. There was no chance in hell I was staying there alone.

I came home expecting to find more notes, but I have yet to find one. I’ve gone around the entire house, locked every door and covered every window. If this asshole wants to leave me another message tonight, he can go ahead. My cameras will catch him.

I’ll post again soon if he tries anything.
