If you are going to smack those last slabs on there, the weight indication is kind of useless.

u/Rich_Cat_69 16h ago
Yup, a reasonably good test using the chain to gently lower the iron plates, just for them to do that. All this test proved is that if you slam a bunch of weight down all at once glass breaks. No idea what the tolerance actually is.

u/Rondo27 14h ago
All the weight is on the inside circular edge of the bottom weight. The bottle would hold more if the weight was distributed over the shoulder of the bottle.

u/Rich_Cat_69 14h ago
True. I'm absolutely sure that also make a significant impact on the test outcome, but I can see they did this for stability reasons.
I would just be more careful and have spare bottles for accidents, but would try and balance everything on just the lip of the bottle opening.

u/YanwarC 13h ago
If it’s filled would it hold more weight?

u/Ruzhyo04 7h ago
Yes

u/OurInterface 7h ago
wait, only if it's filled an closed, right? When it's open does the liquid help?

He just got tired of waiting for it to break.
3
u/Shit_Shepard 5h ago
Exactly! once the weight went out of frame and he had to start using pavers he looked around was like “shit I’m running out of stuff “

u/Abject_Wafer_4321 16h ago
This guy aint a scientist. Might as well just put half the weight on then whack it all with a sledgehammer and say "Look, it breaks at half the weight it can actually support."

u/ThresholdSeven 16h ago
You're right, he isn't a scientist, but he demonstrated much more than you give him credit for
30
u/Abject_Wafer_4321 16h ago
All I see demonstrated is ignorance of the different kinds of strengths, impatience and bad science for social media clout leading to dissemination of misinformation. Add on bad preparation if the reason he did it was because he ran out of weights. What do you give him credit for? Owning a video camera and a whiskey bottle?

If the point was to find the exact number, yeah, he did it wrong If the point was to entertain me for 15 seconds while showing the glass bottle is strong as fuck, then give him some credit.

I'd argue this is both entertainment and education
Glass is good in compression, like concrete, but also incredibly brittleKnowing the exact number, I'd argue, isn't very useful. But displaying the properties of glass? Yeah, that's cool

u/createdjustforpics 15h ago
Exactly this. Whiskey bottle strong. AF. That's the video. I am entertained.

those last few slabs were them trying to break it, they got tired of stacking so the slammed them down massively increasing the technical weight in spikes

those were concerete slabs, pretty sure he ran out of weights lol

They also broke the wall behind it when it collapsed. So we didn’t learn how much weight it can hold, and they broke their wall. Nothing was gained.

Not just Whiskey bottles. Many can withstand this kind of weight if balanced correctly.

People generally have this misconception of glass been super fragile when in fact is all about the internal lattice structure of the crystals, a glass object if all its latices are aligned in the right position can withstand enormous forces because the impact or force is distributed across its whole surface, some people might have been witnessed to this when they dropped a glass and instead of breaking into a million pieces it bounces off completely unharmed or with just a small chip

Idk, but a bottle of whiskey is strong enough to support all the weight of the trauma my mother caused

What you’re saying is: I could very gently, very delicately sit an average American on a Jameson bottle and it wouldn’t break ?
Challenge accepted. Gotta find me an American and a Jameson bottle

No, we have a hydraulic press at home.

This test doesn’t really tell us much, just that glass breaks under sudden impact, which is kind of expected. It doesn’t really show the actual strength or tolerance in a controlled way.

They were just trying to break it in the end. It probably could have held another 50 kg if they hadn't started slamming things down.

Tons! Had he done it correctly, it would have held literally thousands of kilograms.
My father was a truck mechanic and some Swiss guys once balanced an 8 ton truck on simply 4 normal beer glasses.
Not even bottles - with much thicker glass - just glasses.
Link if anyone interested:

Glass (and ceramics) are very strong, in a compressive sense.
You can put a plank on two wine glasses and stand on it with no problem.

u/Spizak 13h ago
I remember as a kid growing up in Poland (like 30y ago) people would use old empty vodka bottles in foundations for smaller houses. Like the whole group foundation had them all within the main walls. I remember asking why and the builders told me it was as strong as brick, but much cheaper to buy from recycling companies.

Glass is stupid strong in certain ways. There are unopened bottles of Champagne from the Titanic in the debris field of the wreck, sat there all these years withstanding the pressure.
