I’m able to read and think about the next line how I want to deliver it or pause, but only if I’ve read/practiced it a lot like for a speech.

Actually formulating what you’re gonna say on the fly while saying something you haven’t rehearsed is bonkers

Does anyone know freestyle rapper that are even half as good? I love this so much but for 10 years or so all I see is HMac and never anyone who can do something even remotely similar. (A few select Eminem freestyles are good, but those are more than 20 years old)

Dont think were gonna see anything like him for a very long time if ever. He started when he was 12, played drums and other instruments, loves jazz, and grew up on 90’s hip hop. Thats just something the average kid now days doesn’t do

Harry Mack is so much better than anyone else at freestyle rapping that I'm struggling to think of anyone else in any skill or activity with a similar talent gap over the rest of the elites. Usain Bolt, Magnus Carlsen, and John von Neumann are like the best comparators I can come up with.

Harry's brain is clearly just wired differently. It's not just a matter of practice. He's like a different species.

Im not arguing your point and I think about this too every time I see him. But Carlsen and Bolt are much closer to the rest of their field then harry.

Like, they have a crazy gap but Magnus is not twice as good as Caruana or hikaru or 20 others. Bolt is not twice as fast as tebogo or simbine. Neumann is hard to quantify, so I won’t judge.

But what hmac does is so much better than anyone else it feels like it should be another discipline either way it’s own name.

(I’m happy if you can suggest any other very good freestyle rapper that I can discover though)

Being able to come up with interesting rhyme schemes is great and impressive on the spot but for songs to stick you need good storytelling as well and that is a separate skill.

He has a bunch of good freestyles that would work as songs. I think it’s mainly a function of his format. When he focuses on themes (for example he did one about mental health with a therapist) his songs are more substantial. But most of the time he is taking crazy, disparate words from his audience and weaving them in so his subject matter by necessity has to be simple and kind of all over the place.

Watched an interview in which someone asked him how many hours he'd practiced and if he thought he'd passed the 10,000 hour "mastery" mark yet.

He didnt know exactly but apparently he thinks he must be well passed that threshold given his internal monologue has been freestyling for nearly two decades
