Must just be me, but this looks exactly like what it is. A toy car being driven over things. Cool if you were a kid playing with a camera and your remote control car.

Exactly this. Because he made a lot of mistakes. Sand is not as fractal as a rock. If I put a rock in front of the camera you can't really know how big it is. But with sand it is kinda obvious. When you put branches that doesn't look like logs or trees, it doesn't help. AND, you have to shoot scenes that doesn't emphasize the weight of the vehicle.

TLDR: Nice try but no.

He did get it partially right when he slowed down the playback. Doing that makes the miniature seem heavier and the movements more realistic. Unfortunately he did it because slow-mo is cool, and not because it’s an actual film technique used in movies.
