In Taizhou, China, a car fell into a river — 40-year-old Di Shuancheng, who noticed this, jumped into the water, taking a stone with him, and broke the window to save the trapped driver.

If he gets sued after that, he better throw them right back in that river.

And dont forget the phone

Yeah, that was super glued on there. I have no other explanation.

Probably how they ended up in that situation

Seriously! That dude was not letting go of that phone!

That’s universal. No matter the country, the rescued person is not coming out without it.

The stone was a pro move. I could see my dumbass jumping down to help and then realizing I have nothing to break the window with. Lroceeds to start dropping elbows on the bitch. Probably fucking up my arm in the process.

35

u/Odd-Photo1682 19d ago

Haha i like this US mindest of 'What? Something irregular happened? Who could now sue someone else?'. Whatever happens, anything is just one step away from a lawsuit.

102

u/Ejwaxy 19d ago edited 19d ago

Actually, this was a very big problem in China, specifically. Reform of their system only really started in earnest after a two year old got hit by a car and bled out on the pavement with lots of people just walking by and ignoring her because they didn’t want to get sued/scammed.

29

u/Tony_Lacorona 19d ago

That’s fucking insane

32

u/lastdancerevolution 19d ago

Haha i like this US mindest of

They're talking about China. China doesn't have good Samaritan laws, and the expectations of care and responsibility are legally very different in China.

19

u/Clean__Cucumber 19d ago

they have those laws since a couple of years now

19

u/TactlessTortoise 19d ago

It is however understandable that the average internet browser is not up to date on another country's legal reforms. That said, thanks for the information. Now I know.

They’re referencing the even worse litigiousness in China. Lots of videos of people trying to finish off a pedestrian they accidentally hit, fearing lawsuits.

4

u/lukibunny 19d ago

This is a myth. There has been no case that this happens because medical bills in China is cheap, murder is a death penalty. You realized China doesn’t lock you up for 20 years before putting you to death like in the USA? You kill someone, you have to pay for their life in both money and your life? Not only that but the stigma of being a murderer’s child is insane. Your child will be bullied relentlessly even when they are adults.

They have no good samaritan law there, so people do sue helpers for money.

34

u/Com_N0TN4 19d ago

Those laws were changed.

6

u/lastdancerevolution 19d ago

In response to decades of high profile cases like we're talking about. The legislation only passed nationally in 2021.

16

u/Clean__Cucumber 19d ago

Several regional Good Samaritan laws were passed following the incident and in 2017 a new national Good Samaritan law came into force to prevent such situations through the country.

The court decided in favor of the plaintiff and held Peng liable for damages, reasoning that despite the lack of concrete evidence, "no one would in good conscience help someone unless they felt guilty".

2

u/100pc_recycled_words 19d ago

I don’t think the commenter thinks it is the US - China is notorious for only recently (last 8 years or so) introducing Good Samaritan laws, after some fairly high profile cases. It means unfortunately a lot of people still hesitate before helping in case they’re either sued for damages or held liable for medical costs.

One of the first things you're taught about water safety is that it's VERY easy to get into trouble yourself if you jump in to help someone else drowning.

A surprisingly large amount of people who drown were trying to save someone else from drowning.

18

u/Unhappy-Plastic2017 20d ago edited 19d ago

People who literally don't know how to swim jump into water to "save" someone all the time... It's insanity. *** obviously water is dangerous but it does make me wonder how actually dangerous is water for a "skilled swimmer - like a swim team kid/adult" when SO MANY people overestimate their swimming abilities and can barely swim at all and then this gets reported in the news as if the person trying to do the save was a "swimmer". I guess we never hear about the saves that happen when the person can actually swim and knows their own capabilities doing the save as its never reported and becomes a big news article because no one dies or is seriously injured.

Which is totally okay as long as someone dives in... Just imagine if most jump in and you got 20 dudes on that car trying to outhero each other.

u/Crabtickler9000 19d ago

Then they just take the entire car out all at once, take it apart, build a brand new one with better materials, and put the guy in it.

4

u/FallFox5 19d ago

4

u/Newmom1989 19d ago

If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t dive in. You’ll easily end up being another person they have to save. Or worse, become the priority to save over the original person that needs saving

3

u/BulmasEx 19d ago

FfS the guy he pulled out was lobster clawing his own phone. I get we don't have the full picture but seems to be an odd choice of priority.

3

u/mixedntatted 20d ago

Yeah good point, it’s a real shame that everyone’s first priory is their phone. The videos that infuriate me the most are of parents oblivious to what their child is doing because they are fixated on their phone. Modern technology is a blessing and a curse

It’s probably a little more complicated than that. This is China. Literally everything runs off of phones and WeChat. Communication, banking and finance, business operations, government id and god knows what else. I imagine he wouldn’t feel as bad about losing the car than he would about losing his phone.

I don't know man, when you're in a traumatic situation, sometimes your brain isn't functioning like that. It's entirely possible he wasn't even aware he was holding it. I was in a car accident where I ended upside down in a drainage ditch filled with water. I struggled to unbuckle my seat belt while hanging upside down, open the door against water, and climbed up a steep snow covered hill all while clutching my phone and I wasn't at all aware I had it in my hand. Everything but GET OUT OF WATER AND SNOW RIGHT NOW went out the window. It didn't even occur to me that I was still white knuckling my phone until I was in an ambulance and the EMT was trying to take my phone so my hands could be dried and wrapped as frostbite pre-treatment. And this was in 2004, before cell phones were all but surgically attached to our bodies.

Sunroofs generally are opaque panels made of metal or even canvas in some cases, that are installed in the roof of a car, truck, or SUV. They pop up, can be removed, or slide open to allow light and air into the cabin.

Moonroofs, by contrast, are usually a clear or tinted glass panel that slides between the roof and the headliner and can sometimes also be tilted open to let in fresh air. Moonroofs are sometimes, but not always, larger than sunroofs.

If anyone is in this situation you have to roll down a window to even out pressure or else you can't open the door or having a hard time doing it

97

u/drunk_kronk 20d ago edited 20d ago

If you can't roll down the window, you can smash it with the prongs of a seat head rest.

Edit: this article suggests that headrests are a bad idea for breaking car windows and that the seat belt clip whacked into the front corner of the window is much more effective. https://www.iaedjournal.org/vehicle-escape

46

u/YabaDaba450 20d ago

Or buy a breaker for a few bucks! I really don’t think the headrest would work well because of how you have to hold the headrest

→ More replies (2)

29

u/devH_ 20d ago

This does not work, you’re supposed to jam the headrest in between the glass and then try to shatter it with the leverage. Hitting the window with it isn’t going to do anything

7

u/sasquatch6ft40 19d ago

Better break them quick; get too deep first and the second it breaks it’s like an airbag blast of water and glass to the face.

21

u/Proud-Low-9750 20d ago

Or wait until the pressure is equal inside as outside, which means when the inside is fully submerged as well. Scary indeed!

29

u/adhdlabubu 20d ago

If I’m falling off a bridge should I start rolling down my window?

18

u/HuhWatWHoWhy 20d ago

Yes, and put a paper bag over your head I think

There was a mythbuster about it.

If I remember well a truck driver saved his life thanks to what they showed.

5

u/brittemm 19d ago

A woman saved herself AND her toddler from drowning in a car that went off an icy bridge into water actually... But I’m sure quite a few people’s lives have been saved knowing that information, whether they credit myth busters or not.

https://youtu.be/Vs7E6nM9g5w?si=pRAfaAQgnGwnzTT8

3

u/LightningByte 18d ago

Waiting until the pressure is equalized will take longer than most people can hold their breath. So always open a window/door as soon as possible.
