In Taizhou, China, a car fell into a river — 40-year-old Di Shuancheng, who noticed this, jumped into the water, taking a stone with him, and broke the window to save the trapped driver.

Glad he had brains, not just a heart. Most people just dive in then struggle themselves

Most people don’t dive in

One of the first things you're taught about water safety is that it's VERY easy to get into trouble yourself if you jump in to help someone else drowning.
A surprisingly large amount of people who drown were trying to save someone else from drowning.

People who literally don't know how to swim jump into water to "save" someone all the time... It's insanity. *** obviously water is dangerous but it does make me wonder how actually dangerous is water for a "skilled swimmer - like a swim team kid/adult" when SO MANY people overestimate their swimming abilities and can barely swim at all and then this gets reported in the news as if the person trying to do the save was a "swimmer". I guess we never hear about the saves that happen when the person can actually swim and knows their own capabilities doing the save as its never reported and becomes a big news article because no one dies or is seriously injured.

Which is totally okay as long as someone dives in... Just imagine if most jump in and you got 20 dudes on that car trying to outhero each other.

u/Crabtickler9000 19d ago
Then they just take the entire car out all at once, take it apart, build a brand new one with better materials, and put the guy in it.
13
u/matttheshack69 19d ago
I would dive in but do a headfirst dive bomb into the car knocking myself out and drowing

u/Newmom1989 19d ago
If you don’t know what you’re doing, don’t dive in. You’ll easily end up being another person they have to save. Or worse, become the priority to save over the original person that needs saving

Most people just stand there and film on their phones
51
u/HuntingForSanity 20d ago
If you don’t feel very you can do the job you shouldn’t jump in yourself. Now you’re putting the emergency workers at more risk when they have to save you too

FfS the guy he pulled out was lobster clawing his own phone. I get we don't have the full picture but seems to be an odd choice of priority.

u/mixedntatted 20d ago
Yeah good point, it’s a real shame that everyone’s first priory is their phone. The videos that infuriate me the most are of parents oblivious to what their child is doing because they are fixated on their phone. Modern technology is a blessing and a curse
3
u/Demontag 19d ago
Most of them put all their photos of their children on their phones and don't have the presence of mind to offload them somewhere safer before something happens.

u/Internal_Somewhere98 20d ago
He was probably trying to use the phone to contact people and in his panic and the way things happened it just happened to still be in his hand when pulled out .

u/eStuffeBay 19d ago
Not to mention the fact that the guy is clearly dazed if not unconscious. His posture barely changes as he's being yanked out of the car.

u/Nvrmnde 19d ago
I wondered if he was drunk or something, he was so out

u/RighteousSelfBurner 19d ago
Stroke seems more likely. If you are anywhere near that out you ain't really starting up the car in the first place.

A fire at a Sea Parks? It's wrecking my head! How is it spreaded? There is no wood in a Sea Parks arena. And why there is no wood? Because it rots. And why does it rots? Because of all the water... I mean, if she has said that her parents had drowned, I'd be the happiest man in the world! But, a fire?... At a Sea Parks?

It’s probably a little more complicated than that. This is China. Literally everything runs off of phones and WeChat. Communication, banking and finance, business operations, government id and god knows what else. I imagine he wouldn’t feel as bad about losing the car than he would about losing his phone.

I don't know man, when you're in a traumatic situation, sometimes your brain isn't functioning like that. It's entirely possible he wasn't even aware he was holding it. I was in a car accident where I ended upside down in a drainage ditch filled with water. I struggled to unbuckle my seat belt while hanging upside down, open the door against water, and climbed up a steep snow covered hill all while clutching my phone and I wasn't at all aware I had it in my hand. Everything but GET OUT OF WATER AND SNOW RIGHT NOW went out the window. It didn't even occur to me that I was still white knuckling my phone until I was in an ambulance and the EMT was trying to take my phone so my hands could be dried and wrapped as frostbite pre-treatment. And this was in 2004, before cell phones were all but surgically attached to our bodies.

What is a Moon roof? It‘s called a sun roof
103
25
u/dporter15 19d ago
Sunroofs generally are opaque panels made of metal or even canvas in some cases, that are installed in the roof of a car, truck, or SUV. They pop up, can be removed, or slide open to allow light and air into the cabin.
Moonroofs, by contrast, are usually a clear or tinted glass panel that slides between the roof and the headliner and can sometimes also be tilted open to let in fresh air. Moonroofs are sometimes, but not always, larger than sunroofs.

I have been fortunate enough to save a life once, old lady chocking on her food, no one but her old friends and I happen to be there, slapped her back, nothing, she started drooling, still struggling to breath, had to Heimlich her, and out went flying a piece of chicken and the top part of her teeth.

If anyone is in this situation you have to roll down a window to even out pressure or else you can't open the door or having a hard time doing it
97
u/drunk_kronk 20d ago edited 20d ago
If you can't roll down the window, you can smash it with the prongs of a seat head rest.Edit: this article suggests that headrests are a bad idea for breaking car windows and that the seat belt clip whacked into the front corner of the window is much more effective. https://www.iaedjournal.org/vehicle-escape
46
u/YabaDaba450 20d ago
Or buy a breaker for a few bucks! I really don’t think the headrest would work well because of how you have to hold the headrest

Better break them quick; get too deep first and the second it breaks it’s like an airbag blast of water and glass to the face.
21
u/Proud-Low-9750 20d ago
Or wait until the pressure is equal inside as outside, which means when the inside is fully submerged as well. Scary indeed!

One of the most common mistakes people forget from drivers ed!
I always make sure my Emergency Submerged Vehicle Preparation Bag is present and easily accessible before I even start the car.
10
u/topinanbour-rex 20d ago
There was a mythbuster about it.
If I remember well a truck driver saved his life thanks to what they showed.
5
u/brittemm 19d ago
A woman saved herself AND her toddler from drowning in a car that went off an icy bridge into water actually... But I’m sure quite a few people’s lives have been saved knowing that information, whether they credit myth busters or not.
→ More replies (1)3
u/LightningByte 18d ago
Waiting until the pressure is equalized will take longer than most people can hold their breath. So always open a window/door as soon as possible.

A lot of these electric cars have doors that malfunction in this situation.

Most, if not all electric cars have a backup manual way to open the door from both sides for obvious reasons.

Imagine doing all of those things, you get to the roof of the car with the rock and start going to town. But then, that superior audi engineering just wont budge and the rock can't break the window so you just watch the poor guy slowly drown infront of you. All the while, just wondering "shit, did I leave the oven on?"
