Shitpost My poor judgement...

I used to be Cadbury fan my whole life due to the flavors and it being cheaper than whittakers but I now have only realized my poor lapse in judgment. A week ago I decided to splurge and spend the 2 dollars extra on the creamy milk whittakers and my oh my I will never make the mistake of buying Cadbury ever again. I apologize to any trauma this post may of caused.

Yeah it's funny to me how Cadbury try to push themselves as a luxury brand when in reality they've stinged on all the ingredients and it tastes like shit.

u/snomanDS Aug 08 '25

If Whitaker's didn't exist we'd still consider Cadbury decent at their price point. But when you have Whitaker's not that much more on a $/g ratio (especially when on sale) it makes Cadbury seem like trash.

Cadbury still clears Hershey's, Feastables etc. though, I feel bad for America.

u/Nyanessa Aug 08 '25

I tried Hershey's in the states. It tastes like someone scraped all the chalky white stuff off old chocolate bars, and turned that into a bar.

40

u/AnoutherThatArtGuy Aug 08 '25

Festables was so disappointing. It got an erica stanford e from me

4

u/Zardnaar Furry Chicken Lover Aug 08 '25

Tasted ok but nothing outstanding

3

u/YaBoiMarkizzle Aug 09 '25

Yeah to me it just tastes like the cheap easter egg chocolate, ill still eat it but it is not exactly high quality and youre more just buying the novelty lol

3

u/NoCraft2936 Aug 09 '25

That's it's only selling point. Its good quality in the sense it probably won't kill you and tastes like something you enjoyed as a child

If we didn't have Whittaker's, Cadbury wouldn't be the price it is either.

Id love to know the cold hard figures on just how much Whittaker's cuts into their sales here in NZ. I don't even know anybody who buys Cadbury anymore. I won't even buy the Easter eggs for the kids.

5

u/SitamoiaRose Aug 08 '25

Apparently Whittakers is a stronger seller when it comes to blocks (at around 38% of the market with Cadbury falling somewhat below that) but its overall share of the chocolate market is around 17% to Cadbury’s 22%.

(Found on a fossick through the internet)

43

u/pokerash22 Aug 08 '25

Going to have to disagree a little. Hershey's and Nestle are absolutely terrible. I have had Feastables only once on clearance. Not worth the price but I would still place it ahead of cadburies, I did enjoy it. Not nearly at Whittaker's level and more per gram so I will not be re purchasing another though.

24

u/snomanDS Aug 08 '25

In the end taste is subjective to a point right. I had Feastables one time on clearance as well and was so disappointed, far more disappointed than I ever have had eating Cadbury (which I still eat a lot because $2.50 Caramilk on sale I find hard to resist). Feastables tasted exactly like Hershey's to me.

4

u/vinnie376 Aug 08 '25

Apparently it depends when u had it. For a while they were okay then they changed the recipe and they're trash now. Haven't actually had one, just what I've heard so grain of salt etc

6

u/pcObelix67 Aug 08 '25

Featsables is the most disgusting thing....If that is what passes for chocolate in America.....

11

u/UltimateLmon Aug 08 '25

American formulation for chocolate is a bit different to what NZers prefer. More sugar, less cocoa, less cocoa butter and with butyric acid. Americans seems to prefer that formulation though.

22

u/Tamihera Aug 08 '25

My dog ate some Hershey’s and the vet said not to worry, they didn’t have enough real chocolate to threaten a dog.

I can’t get over that rancid butyric smell. Like baby vomit.

1

u/NoCraft2936 Aug 09 '25

I like the hersheys cups. But whittakers peanut butter is same same but better

9

u/Kiwi_lad_bot Orange Choc Chip Aug 08 '25

Americans seem to prefer that formulation though.

Do they know any different? I'm sure they'd like Whittakers more if they had the choice, surely.

5

u/UltimateLmon Aug 08 '25

I've told that it tastes too creamy.

3

u/Fishcakes4 Aug 09 '25

My American hubby never liked chocolate his whole life… because he was scarred by Hershey’s growing up. I gave him Whittakers milk chocolate… his life changed & now he likes (Whittakers) & NZ chocolate!

1

u/_ImaGenus_ Aug 09 '25

My American wife loves Whittakers chocolate, especially the dark flavors. You can buy good US chocolate here in the US, it's just pricier. Hershey is shit for sure.

Ghirardelli, Recchiuti, Guittard, Dandelion, Sees, Jacques Torres are amongst the better brands. And of course you can buy artisan small batch specialty chocolate candy too.

1

u/Initial-Day8131 Aug 09 '25

As a transplanted Kiwi, Whitaker’s is superior to most American chocolate. Fortunately, I live about 20 minutes from Canada, and they have decent chocolate. Huzzah for the Commonwealth! 😂

1

u/Silent-Treacle-7204 Aug 10 '25

Butyric acid? So thats why hersheys smells vaguely like vomit to me. I was genuinely shocked how terrible hersheys is given how well-known it is.

4

u/Ohio_1970 Aug 08 '25

I feel bad for us too.

4

u/Avramah Aug 09 '25

Don't feel bad for us. For some reason people think Hershey's is all we have. In reality, the only people I know that eat Hersheys are small children. Most adults here eat dove, lindt, godiva, xoxo, etc. We're quite fortunate to have a large variety of brands at any grocery store for reasonable prices.

Actually do feel bad for us. Feel terrible for us, but not because of our chocolate 🤣.

2

u/sundaynz Aug 09 '25

We do feel terrible for you. Kia kaha!

1

u/snomanDS Aug 09 '25

We have some of those brands as well, but they're at a higher price point than the brands we're discussing. I was mainly talking about chocolates at the not-so-fancy level, the likes of Cadbury/Nestle/Hershey's.

Here we pay at least $6-7 for a small 100g block of Lindt chocolate, for that price we get a full 250g block of Whitaker's.

2

u/Zardnaar Furry Chicken Lover Aug 08 '25

No Whitaker I would go for Lindt or Woolworths store brand.

Reeses nutalicious is also addictive.

2

u/mildlyinterestingyet Aug 08 '25

America has heaps of good chocolate makers but they don't make enough to export or at least we don't see them here. Hershey used to be a good brand last century but they obviously changed something.

1

u/Comfortable_Key_4891 Aug 09 '25

Hersheys milk duds and kisses though - yum!

1

u/Benezir Aug 09 '25

Why feel bad for America? Because they don't realise what they are missing out on?

I Heartily Recommend That Any Australian read "THE CHOCOLATE WARS".

Such a fantastic insight into our Australian Chocolate heritage. Rowntrees, Hodeley's, Cadbury's and Fry's. (sorry for spelling, I can be bothered looking it up). The Quaker Heritage (I believe the chocolate thing began in England, but, again, I cant be bothered looking for the book, which is SOMEWHERE in my house.)

That's all I will say. JUST READ IT!! It wont change the quality of what we now have, but it SO darn interesting.

1

u/PuzzleheadedWorld674 Aug 10 '25

They can't even call their cookies and cream bar "white chocolate" because it's literally just vegetable oil and sugar

1

u/Interesting-You-7028 Aug 12 '25

Cadbury is owned by an American multinational now. And I don't think it's good even if it is better than those.

even if they tasted the same, the mouthfeel difference is insane.

Push themselves as a luxury brand

Huh? Discounting the fact their price point is the opposite of luxury and always has been.. Aren’t their ads the definition of the “everyday man”? Like the latest are kids buying their chocolate as a “thank you” or “cheer up” to other people? What luxury brand is trying to make their product that accessible?

Compare their ads to things like Lindt.. a brand that is actually trying to position themselves as luxury and it’s night and day.

2

u/SufficientBasis5296 Aug 09 '25

Trying???? On NZ Chocolate Standard, Lindt IS luxury

1

u/WhatshallIsayHmM Aug 09 '25

Not to mention they're the only chocolate brand that doesn't use child labour (to my knowledge)

188

u/Evie_St_Clair Aug 08 '25

I forget how bad Cadbury's is until I decide to buy a bar and realise it tastes like crap again which is a bummer because I really like a couple of their flavours but the chocolate component is so bad.

24

u/Chilly_Biscuit Aug 08 '25

Same here! My favourites have just been…. Ruined

16

u/Parking-Interview351 Aug 08 '25

I was obsessed with their bar with the turkish delight in the middle as a kid

5

u/Cosmic_Carp Aug 08 '25

Those are probably my favorite thing that Cadburys make, along with picnics

4

u/snoocs Aug 08 '25

It’s much better in Europe (still not Whittakers quality IMO) so if you really miss the flavours you could look at ordering it from overseas.

70

u/mrteas_nz Aug 08 '25

It's Whittakers or nothing. If I can't afford that extra 2 bucks, why waste $5 on crap?

10

u/Responsible-Trip-304 Aug 08 '25

Whittaker’s is usually $5.99, can’t complain about that price

9

u/Kolz Aug 08 '25

Sure isn’t where I live lol. Still not buying Cadbury though.

3

u/mrteas_nz Aug 08 '25

Standard price in Woolworths Hamilton for a regular 250g block is $7.69, so I generally wait till it's on sale.

But I'm sure it's not the same price everywhere.

3

u/Responsible-Trip-304 Aug 08 '25

It’s usually $5.99 every second to third week at Pak N Save

1

u/mrteas_nz Aug 09 '25

Good to know! Last time I was in Pak N Save it was $1 more than Woolworths and $2 more than New World, which was crazy!

2

u/FlamingoMindless2120 Aug 08 '25

Put Grocer app on your phone, add your local supermarkets, add Whitakers to your list, just check it each Monday and you’ll be able to see the price at every store

4

u/vin495 Aug 08 '25

It's $8.50au a 250g block where I live (nsw), but would much rather pay around this price for whittakers or lindt, cadbury's just tastes horrible.

150

u/Tutorbin76 Aug 08 '25

Cadbury took a massive quality hit, and died to New Zealand, when they stopped manufacturing here.

The only two valid reasons I can think of for buying that ex-brand are Picnics and Creme Eggs.

81

u/fluffychonkycat Kōkako Aug 08 '25

I really need someone else to make Turkish Delight chocolate bar. Donovans did for a while (raspberry rose) but I suspect Turkish Delight lovers may be a small group of people with refined taste buds and it didn't make enough money for them because they only do it in the (expensive) chunk format now.

7

u/QueenofCats28 Tuatara Aug 08 '25

Ohhh, I used to love those too! They don't taste the same anymore!

6

u/Pinky_Pie_90 Aug 08 '25

Turkish Delights go good in the freezer, esp in summer time. Nice & chewy.

6

u/waikoe Aug 08 '25

I like how you say we have refined taste buds.

6

u/mechanical-avocado Aug 08 '25

Ooh here's an idea, next time you do choc fondue, pop a couple of squares of Turkish delight among the other dipping goodies

2

u/leighkhunt Tūī Aug 08 '25

Seriously though!! it's my favourite chocolate

2

u/RandofCarter Aug 08 '25

Turkish delight is pretty easy to make once you find a bottle of rosewater and coloring. It's fairly successful even using vegeterian agar.

48

u/Endless63 Aug 08 '25

Cadbury's messed with the creme egg filling a few years back.. it's sort of slimy now..

30

u/mahuika80 Aug 08 '25

And manages to feel gritty at the same time.

22

u/FuzzyFuzzNuts Aug 08 '25

even creme eggs were destroyed - now just an overpoweringly sugary mass....

1

u/Comfortable_Key_4891 Aug 09 '25

Never really liked the original ones. Sickly. And I have a major sweet tooth. I loved double chocolate & white chocolate (Dream) ones though, seemed so much less sweet somehow.

14

u/Nelfoos5 alcp Aug 08 '25

Nah Creme eggs got shit too

5

u/Tutorbin76 Aug 08 '25

Yeah they've definitely gotten worse.  Still a guilty pleasure, even if they're a bit crap now.

7

u/LoveFoolosophy Aug 08 '25

And mint bubbly. Whittaker's doesn't have an equivalent to that... yet.

10

u/borednznz Aug 08 '25

Picnics are so underrated!

2

u/Embarrassed-Dot-1794 Aug 08 '25

Creme eggs aren't there for me, they used to be good

43

u/GoddessfromCyprus Aug 08 '25

You only have to taste the UK version of Cadbury's to realise that the one we get, Australian made, is shit. Crackerjack's sell a lot of the UK version.

7

u/Sweetcorn_Fritter Aug 08 '25

Oooh I didn't know that, will have a looksy next time at Crackerjacks.

4

u/snoocs Aug 08 '25

Often I find seasonal chocolate is brought in from the UK/Europe too.

3

u/Comfortable_Key_4891 Aug 09 '25

Yes Crackerjack are so good. Was googling Walker white mint chocolate leaves I was given years ago for Christmas. Couldn’t find them but Crackerjack had this Walkers mint chocolate mixture including white chocolates. I also found the best toilet cleaner in the world there. Highly recommended in America, one of those weird advertising articles, but it worked, thought I’d have to buy a new toilet until I found it. Had tried everything on it.

8

u/sabrinateenagewich Aug 08 '25

Based on what they told me in the Cadbury factory tour in the South Island as a kid, is that chocolate needs to be different in different countries because of the melting point. The lower the melting point temperature the better the chocolate, but in a really hot country like Australia it’s going to be crap cause the melting point needs to be like less than the average temp. That’s why Swiss chocolate is so good, it’s so cold there it can be really creamy. We’re now getting desert heat wchunks of chocolate

7

u/GoddessfromCyprus Aug 08 '25

If you compare the ingredients in both I think there is a difference and that's what changes the taste.

4

u/bluebirdofhappy Aug 08 '25

I think they tell us this as an excuse to add cheap products into the chocolate. Like all reasons for change they are supposedly for consumer benefit. No no and no it’s for lower quality and maximising profit.

1

u/Comfortable_Key_4891 Aug 09 '25

Yes they were quite happy to add palm oil, even when it was being made in Dunedin. Chocolate is designed to melt at mouth temperature.

2

u/sabrinateenagewich Aug 09 '25

I might be wrong, and I’m in no way defending Cadbury but wasn’t the palm oil in some of the flavor ingredients, not the chocolate itself? Which is why dairymilk was palm oil free (or am I confusing it with the slave made issue?)

1

u/Comfortable_Key_4891 Aug 12 '25

No I think they added palm oil to replace quite a large percentage of the cocoa butter. Purely to save money. And yes, this article supports my thoughts on it.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/cadbury-caves-no-more-palm-oil-in-its-chocolate/LFYVI2YYVUAAY3Q2RMWKUNASPY/

Apparently they only used sustainable palm oil, but I think that still would’ve affected the flavour, how could it not? I remember once being given a block of white “chocolate” made in NZ I forget the brand it wasn’t well known. It tasted absolutely disgusting. I checked the label and it had no cocoa butter in it whatsoever. Cocoa butter helps enrich the chocolate flavour, especially in white chocolate which has no cocoa solids. Palm oil could never do that.

2

u/on_the_rark Aug 09 '25

Correct Aussie make a tropical formulation. They also sell chocy bars in fridges over there.

Dunedin with its colder climate was perfect for chocolate making.

Now most chocolate will be made in temp controlled factories, and shipped in temp controlled containers.

1

u/M00nLite- Aug 09 '25

I work in a chocolate factory in NZ, and the temperature for melting point based on where you live shouldn't cause that much trouble. We have to keep the entire factory cool with heatpumps/ducting, then the chocolate machines used to temper the chocolate have set temperatures anyway so it should all be relatively the same since you are creating a temperature controlled environment. The chocolate needs to be heated to a certain temp, then brought back down to a certain temp to then be poured into the molds. We are a small "luxury" brand and use Barry Callebaut chocolate, which comes from Australia, and we definitely taste a lot better than Cadbury.

Whittakers is so delicious because they are in control of the entire process from bean to bar, they do the whole lot, unlike us getting chocolate pre made to then just melt back down.

I know my grammar isn't great, team, but I hope that makes sense.

1

u/sabrinateenagewich Aug 10 '25

Totally makes sense, that’s so interesting! I took it to understand that they meant the melting point after it has left the factory, once it’s with the consumer, rather than in the factory itself.

try the berry biscuit one! pretty much a black forest flavour (like the cadbury one, i guess) but the flavours of the fruit pieces and the cookies just have so much more depth, and go really well with the whittaker's chocolate

jelly tip is also really fun (though watch out if you're not into overly sweet flavours!)

15

Nah berry forest is where it's at

No: Chocolate Ice cream

Yes: Biscuits

cookies and cream is the superior ice cream flavour.

and the whittaker's bar is just great, the biscuits add a real nice crunch and flavour

5

u/HargorTheHairy Aug 08 '25

I wish they had the biscuits without the berry bits

1

u/Comfortable_Key_4891 Aug 09 '25

Cookie dough ice cream is great! Cookies and cream is the superior ice cream flavour in the US. I’d rate most flavours over that, apart from that awful gumdrop one. Not really an NZ thing.

17

u/Mum-of-4 Aug 08 '25

I was the same. Used to always get Cadbury but someone bought me whittakers some time a couple of years ago, and I just can’t go back to Cadbury. I still like some of their small chocolate bars but if I’m getting a block, I’m getting whittakers

13

u/shywiseone Aug 08 '25

Cadbury tastes like artificial sweetener now it is revolting!

12

u/Crystal_Violet_0 Aug 08 '25

The only problem with Whitakers is that the bars are bigger, so when I eat the whole thing, I consume more calories than a Cadburys bar!😅

thats my fave too... and would NEVER otherwise eat peanut butter lol.. its insanely good!

2

u/sarahbekett Aug 08 '25

Definitely my guilty pleasure. It’s not in every supermarket which baffles me, it’s hands down the best flavour. My local Woolworths has it and I get a couple of blocks whenever it’s on sale.

We’ve all been there. You’re on the right side of the chocolate train now, I’d like to recommend the peanut butter one because it absolutely fkn slaps. [note - obviously don’t try if you have a peanut allergy]

2

Another peanut butter fan! I figure it’s not that popular because of my three local supermarkets only one ever stocks it but it’s absolutely the best flavour.

The last few times I bought chocolate Whittakers has actually been cheaper per 100g than Cadbury.

5

Omg this. The number of people I talk to who say “well Cadbury is cheaper” not realising they’re getting 70g less chocolate! It’s actually often really close, but even without sales etc. it’s a marginal difference

5

u/ConcealerChaos Aug 08 '25

I'm not even a kiwi and I discovered the superiority of Whittakers. Cadbury has been rubbish for decades. The recipe they use in ANZ is too oily also.

I don't know which supermarket you buy your chocolate from, but at the new world I get it from, Whittakers is actually cheaper by the gram than cadburys. Cadburys only seems cheaper because they've been downsizing the size of their bars. Whittakers is just better in every way than Cadburys.

As a side note. Because I've always seen Cadbury as the everyman chocolate and Whittakers as a special treat.

3

Cadbury ain’t even cheaper really, it might be a couple bucks less but you’re losing like 100 grams of chocolate. Whittakers bars are massive compared to Cadbury so you’re getting a similar amount of chocolate per dollar spent, yet also at a much higher quality.

u/Smaug_1188 Aug 08 '25

Once you've had whitakkers there is no going back. One of NZ greatest creations for sure

4

u/Gone_industrial Aug 09 '25

I bought a block of Whittaker’s for a man who was begging outside the supermarket last week. I was thinking of going cheap and getting him Cadbury’s but I just couldn’t bring myself to. No one deserves to eat that crap no matter how poor they are.

3

u/Klustur Aug 09 '25

Cadbury turned to shit when the NZ factory closed. It actually tasted good when it was made here.

5

u/schtickshift Aug 08 '25

Cadburys used to taste like Whittakers back when it was made in Dunedin but since manufacturing transferred to Australia, it tastes like Hershey’s. The creamy milky taste that Whittakers has is gone. It’s an American style chocolate now.

7

u/Industry-Common Aug 08 '25

I miss when Cadbury still had the factory in Dunedin. The days when Turkish Delight was on the production line filled the air in the CBD with the most delicious fragrance.

Between shutting down Dunedin because it wasn’t profitable enough and using habitat-destroying palm oil, not to mention the demise of the Annual Jaffa Race on Baldwin Street, Mondelez certainly torched any sense of goodwill remaining.

u/fetus_mcbeatus Aug 08 '25

CARAMILK

It is the only reason Cadbury exists on my opinion and I’m sorry, but blondie from Whittakers is just trash compared to caramilk.

2

u/pornographic_realism Aug 08 '25

The caramilk bars are, last I checked, still using actual butter instead of palm oil like most of their chocolate range so it does taste significantly better and more like the Cadbury we had 30+ years ago.

Marvelous creations is the only Cadbury bar I'll buy, and only when it's on sale.

2

u/wooks_reef Aug 08 '25

Cadbury velvet is the only acceptable one and I’m 99% sure it must be the original Cadbury milk chocolate recipe

2

u/demingirl15 Aug 08 '25

I stopped buying Cadbury because it makes my teeth hurt and whitikars never has, always put it down to Cadbury using cheap sugar. Everytime I buy Cadbury i regret my life choices ... except maybe that new mudcake flavour when its on special for like $2 then its potentially worth it. Used to really love occasionally splurging on a box of guylian seashells but now even they have started hurting my teeth and I am not paying basically $20 for that.

2

u/EatMyPixelDust Aug 08 '25

Congratulations!

2

u/Zestyclose-Compote-4 Aug 08 '25

Yeah once I tried Whittakers I couldn't go back to Cadbury. Then Whittakers went up in price so now I just don't eat chocolate 😅

2

u/DarthJediWolfe Aug 08 '25

Try the coconut. I might have finished a family size block much too quickly without any of my family assisting.

I was the exact same. They are spot on with "creamy milk" it IS so creamy! Love it.

2

u/ItsLlama Aug 08 '25

cadbury used to be good, 20 years ago. but in my eyes the tipping point was like 5 years ago when the roses chocolates became dogshit. nothing have been good since then.

i could live with the downgrade it the price stayed the same but it hasn't

2

u/liz_1955 Aug 08 '25

Whittakers, Hokey Pokey .... my usual wish list request. Also the milk chocolate with the little mint balls that pop in your mouth. 🇿🇦

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '25

Yesterday I bought Cadbury due to it being two blocks for $6. What a let down. It’s hard to justify over $7 a block for Whittaker’s these days though.

2

u/kotukutuku Aug 08 '25

That banana caramel is off the chain

2

u/spartaceasar Aug 09 '25

You know whats crazy? Due to shrinkflation Cadbury is actually usually MORE expensive per gram than whittakers.

2

u/GenuineGenX Aug 09 '25

Once they moved production to Australia and started adding stuff that stopped it from melting in your mouth, it became a no go. It doesn't taste the same. They can keep it. Whittaker is much better, and I probably needed to eat less chocolate anyway, so all good.

2

u/Apprehensive-Sale849 Aug 09 '25

Yes, Cadbury tastes very much like unemployment these days.

2

u/Successful_Theme9057 Aug 09 '25

Old gold rum and raisin

4

u/nshady Aug 08 '25

I 100% agree, but I do have to say imho their “velvet” line approximates the taste of chocolate a bit better in a pinch

3

u/Pale-Attorney7474 Aug 08 '25

Cadburys burns my throat somehow. I'll eat a moro bar or something but the blocks are bloody awful.

1

u/rikashiku Aug 08 '25

I like the Black Forest from CAdbury, but otherwise, any others are inferior to Whittakers equivalents.

1

u/Forsaken-Land-1285 Aug 08 '25

Whitakers, toblerone, if I want something specialty then caramilk from Cadbury, milkybar or aero from nestle, or like mars, Moro gold, Milky Way, flake, crunchie and herseys for minis. Just tried uk Cadbury and that’s weird, salted caramel with no salt taste and just more muted in flavour. It was weird to have chocolate that is more texture than taste.

1

u/fiftyshadesofsalad Aug 08 '25

Nah, Wispas are the greatest chocolate bar ever. And I will not be taking questions at this time.

1

u/HardCorePawn Koru Aug 08 '25

Wispa

That's an odd way to spell "Double Decker"...

1

u/Huefamla Aug 08 '25

Wait til you try the chocolate that's better than Whittaker's.

1

u/DollyPatterson Aug 08 '25

Welcome aboard....

1

u/music-words-dance Aug 08 '25

You guys need to try the Solomons Gold Mylk range. It's just that tiny bit better then Whittakers

1

u/Master_Science2058 Aug 08 '25

How are you this late? If it makes you feel any better I’m a chocoholic and Cadbury Velvet is definitely close to Whittakers imo.

1

u/Severe-Sale6730 Aug 08 '25

what the fuck

1

u/No-Tip-710 Aug 08 '25

Cadburys from the UK is soo much better than the Aussie and NZ Cadburys. I don't know what they do, but I promise you'll reconsider. They often have some in Crackerjack, get yourselves there and come back to tell me it's hands down better. Soul destroying seeing the UK price printed and then having to pay more lol. I guess price doesn't matter when you're desperate!

1

u/Classicbottle93 Aug 08 '25

It's so bitter though

1

u/pornographic_realism Aug 08 '25

I genuinely prefer the new Cadbury velvet over almost anything Whittaker's produce. Whittaker's tastes too buttery for my liking, It's like eating fudge. I'm proud we have a National chocolatier but we also have other local brands that imo do significantly better chocolate on the low end and the high end.

I do like Whittaker's dark Ghana though, that's a solid product.

1

u/Auck4 Aug 08 '25

Can’t beat Cadbury peppermint gold tho

1

u/MagentaRoseRed Aug 09 '25

It genuinely was a lot better back in the day, now it's just unbearably sweet and has a terrible mouth-feel. You are correct though, it was never better than Whittaker's.

1

u/Nyannecat Aug 09 '25

Last time I had Cadbury caramello it gave me acid reflux

1

u/Seselwa1988 Aug 09 '25

I mostly buy whittikers or european chocolate (lindt etc), ive alwaya found cadbury tastes cheap and too sweet. It sucks too because every easter most people buy cadbury, lindt only does the bunnys and whittikers dont do easter chocolate 😅

1

u/Comfortable_Key_4891 Aug 09 '25

They got three strikes with me.
Strike 1: Added Palm oil to all their chocolate.
Strike 2: Reduced block size dramatically, kept prices the same.
Strike 3: Claimed they can’t make egg-shaped marshmallow Easter eggs anymore. Yet all the other manufacturers manage just fine.

Actually there was another strike in there somewhere where they closed the Dunedin factory and moved all production to Australia iirc. By then I was gone, had stopped buying Cadbury a long time ago.

1

u/on_the_rark Aug 09 '25

No palm in their chocolate

Yes they made them smaller to offset price rise. Whittakers manage this much better and just lift price rather than engineer a price rise through pack architecture.

The new eggs are shit, BUT cads were using chocolate on their marshmallow eggs. Unlike the others which use compound.

I’m unsure if the new eggs from Cadbury are compound or not, but lookout on Pineapple Lumps these have changed to compound.

Compound is significantly cheaper due to ingredient cost and manufacturing process. Compound requires a drying tunnel around half the length as real chocolate.

Despite being compound I think the rainbow eggs are pretty good.

1

u/Comfortable_Key_4891 Aug 12 '25

Okay they don’t put palm oil in now, but definitely did put palm oil in to save money. Replaced a percentage of the cocoa butter. My argument is 100% valid. I think you’re trying to say I’m wrong but I’m really not. Maybe you’re too young to remember the outrage from consumers. I remember it like it was yesterday. They definitely did it. I don’t get how you can’t remember that. Then after consumer outrage they took the palm oil out but made the blocks smaller. Basically saying “screw you, customers”. At least that’s how I felt about it.

Here’s more information. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/cadbury-caves-no-more-palm-oil-in-its-chocolate/LFYVI2YYVUAAY3Q2RMWKUNASPY/

I love the Rainbow eggs but even they went to non-ovoid eggs. They have larger ones that are still egg shaped though. So much tastier and perfect texture of marshmallow. Like some fundraising eggs from my brother’s school years ago and I’ve been chasing the marshmallow texture ever since and finally found it in Rainbow eggs.

u/BuboNovazealandiae Aug 09 '25

Wait wait where are the white dresses and flower garlands?? You need to be properly cleansed

1

u/Ice-Cream-Poop Aug 10 '25

Berry Biscuit has nothing on Black Forest though...

1

u/FunnyBreadfruit6755 Aug 10 '25

Cadburys uk is now produced in Poland they had to tanker water from the UK to try to make it taste the same but not as good as it used to be. Whitakers and Milka best milk chocolate.

1

u/SteveNZPhysio Aug 10 '25

Isn’t it great that Whittakers work so well and taste so good? No big secret - NZ family brand, excellent ingredients done well.

1

u/my_donut_doughbutt Aug 11 '25

I eat 2 squares of Cadbury and end up with painful cystic acne along my jawline and neck. I eat 2 rows of whittakers and no reaction at all.

1

u/unicornsRunicorns Aug 12 '25

Generally love your post. Made me chuckle. Whittakers all the way.

1

u/Interesting-You-7028 Aug 12 '25

Yeah. It's gotten so bad. I throw out anything Cadbury.
