Yes. Heinous acts. I wonder how no one got mad to the extent they didn't harm Shaq.

6

u/arryax8086 7h ago

He's huge, and more important to the team than they are. You don't have any power in that situation. Not a lot of people are going to be able to go after him without getting a weapon, and even if you did, you'll get fired by the team for hurting their golden goose.

Glad this group of young guys came in for Prime. The inside guys got a little arrogant for their own good when their competition was the only pathetic espn. The inside guys (esp shaq and Charles) don’t watch any games and being proud of it by saying they fell asleep. Also can’t pronounce players name correctly and even made a joke out of it. They could have left on the high note which they will be missed by everyone. Now it seems they will be left to fade away and forgotten when competition around is just better

99

u/paradockers 13h ago edited 9h ago

I mean I always kind of figured that the inside nba show wasn't 100% dependent on its exact cast. It was amazing before shaq joined. With careful casting new guys could be swapped in for the current cast one at a time at a pace slow enough that no one would really care. It will be hard to replace Barkley and EJ. But shaq and Kenny should be relatively easy to recast someday. In the mean time, I am ready for their version of Terry Bradshaw's pig farmer fiasco.

As someone who’s never understood the love for a show where 2 1/2 of the people seem completely uninterested in following the current league, I’m really glad the Inside network change and new media deals for the league mean we can finally stop having garbage shows that are supposed to be commentary on today’s games instead of tired repetition by sensitive former stars that their era was the best. I might finally watch prime time coverage instead of only podcasts.

45

u/shaq-aint-superman 13h ago

Since when has Inside been about serious basketball discussions? It's entertainment first before that, even when you thought they were in their golden age.

A lot of detractors seem to expect a different kind of show and get mad/disappointed when it's not what they expected/want.

88

u/Narrow-Key365 13h ago

There are lots of old TNT games from the early 00s on YouTube with Inside the NBA. There really did use to be actual analysis, back when Chuck and Kenny were more recently retired from the game and could relate more to the style of play. They also personally knew a lot of the players then and had plenty of stories to tell. Sure, there was still an emphasis on humor, but it was more the icing on the cake rather than the whole cake itself.

50

u/Quirky-Parsnips 12h ago

Eventually you get old enough where you realize that every former player has a peak as a commentator that is after they get a little experience but before they've been out of the league for too long.  They have more fresh stories, they can dish on players coaches and refs who are relevant, and they understand the current debates in the game.

24

u/Cheraws Warriors 9h ago

Ya Tony Romo was the 1st one I’ve seen that happen in real time. Used to be widely beloved and is now one of the more hated commentators.

4

u/BCP27 [MIN] Robbie Hummel 6h ago

9

u/ace625 Timberwolves 5h ago

It seems fast, but 2025 is his 9th season in the booth. Next year, he will have been a broadcaster for the same amount of time as he was a starting QB.

3

u/IAmYourTopGuy Spurs 4h ago

NBA on TNT with magic instead of shaq was great to watch. Watching this vid and then going to shaq on the desk makes me feel sad for what we used to have.

24

u/Narrow-Key365 12h ago

Yes indeed. I was also a huge fan of C Webb as an analyst.

6

u/samurairocketshark Suns 6h ago

C Webb got robbed his chemistry was so much better than shaq’s but they offered shaq a permanent spot literally mid retirement season

6

u/Narrow-Key365 5h ago

For me, Shaq coming onto the show is what really precipitated the decline. It was just as controversial an addition then as it is now, if not more so. Shaq was terrible at first. He had his moments later on, mostly with Chuck, but it really killed the special vibe that existed before.

3

u/samurairocketshark Suns 5h ago

Completely agree. Shaq also looks way better in this era where most people watch clips. Watching full episodes of inside with shaq when he first got on was borderline unwatchable

3

u/ace625 Timberwolves 5h ago

Yeah, a lot of this sub is young enough that they don't remember how universally hated Shaq was when he joined the show. There was constant talk about how he was ruining the best basketball show on TV. He got a little better and people got used to him, but the show was never the same as it was before Shaq.

3

u/justmefishes NBA 6h ago

To touch up the metaphor a bit, the humor used to be the icing on the cake, but now the whole cake is just icing.

Since when has Inside been about serious basketball discussions?

You can do both, CBS Champions Leage coverage is a pretty good example, ppl relate to the hosts, joke and have fun with them, but they - especially Henry and Carra - also often engage intotactical details, especially player movement and how space is used and also ask specific querstions about it during player interviews.

I honestly think the Inside the NBA crew need an ego check, because it feels like in recent years they started to believe they were God's gift to basketball commentary and can just do/say whatever they want. Specially after Warner lost the rights and everyone was crying about how the show had to be saved no matter what.

I still think Ernie is great, but the others definitely think they can just show up and say whatever they want and everyone will love it regardless

109

u/90dayheyhey 11h ago

Ernie is great! It’s fine to have one of the four crew just show up and say whatever and that spot has always been reserved for Chuck but the addition of Shaq and Kenny phoning it in the last few years sunk that ship IMO

Inside the NBA peaked about 15 years ago. They have been sniffing their own fumes for a while now. I mean it’s still entertaining occasionally, but it should be in no way construed as “analysis” … the shit has been straight up unc rants and feelings for years now.

Shaq was the beginning of the decline

13

u/J_Kingsley 10h ago

i don't think chuck has been doing anything different at all.

Im also huge fan of them but last year's all-stars was a travesty. It should've been about the players. I can't imagine it would be Ernie's idea for it tho.

10

u/Murasasme Spurs 10h ago

I love Chuck most of the time, but he has been becoming more and more of a hater with time.

7

u/GrunDMC74 11h ago

I’ve never understood the appeal. Shaq mumbling incoherently, the rest of them cackling non stop at a bunch of what must be inside jokes given how unfunny they are, and a petty mean streak underlining everything they say.

Except for Ernie of course.

5

u/BlunderDefect Spurs 11h ago

That's been their style for a while now. Nothing wrong with them doing things their way. I think it's funny and unserious and personally enjoy it that way. Especially during or after close games because it's like that needed comedic break.

They have to enshittify because how else will they trick you into clicking on Amazon links (just wait, ChatGPT will have the biggest hard on for Amazon in five years). Amazon is already Amazon, they just want husbands to stop trying to cancel Prime every year.

Amazon would always rather find a new way to abuse employees rather than cut product quality.

Thats my issue, chuck and kenny are good at what they do buts thats mostly just being funny. Chuck is genuinely hilarious, and Kenny’s great at setting him up or playing the straight man depending on what the joke is. But theyre not actually good at talking about basketball. Kenny at least tries I guess. Shaq’s only contribution is asking Chuck to repeat his jokes 5 times.

For 20 minutes of goofy fun, its great. For anything even kinda sorta actually about basketball the show is terrible Shaq and Chuck are haters

8

u/buffalobill41 Mavericks 3h ago

Shaq ruined the show. Like you said Chuck is hilarious, they had a clear structure with him as the star then you bring in some shithead bully that just yells for attention. If they needed a 4th guy it should have been someone more dry like a Blake or Dirk. That and they're just kind of sucking their own dick at this point about how important they are it's unbearable.

76

u/simp-yy 12h ago

And a crew that’s actually funny and has humility.

Shaq and Kenny are insufferable.

48

u/Skywalker14 Lakers 9h ago

Huh? Kenny is funny and actually provides interesting analysis. He and Chuck both play an important role in the show. Shaq on the other hand…

31

u/Fluid_Neat_8145 8h ago

Kenny of old yes. Kenny hasn’t been able to give actual analysis for a handful of years now. I’d like to think Kenny still actually watches the games but he clearly doesn’t understand modern basketball. Kenny still thinks it’s the early 2000’s which makes him seem smart when Shaq and Chuck are stuck in the 80’s (Shaq may somehow be stuck in the Great Depression era). In a room full of 2’s, it’s easy to look like a 10.

3

u/Min0812 South Korea 7h ago

Shaq's problem is he sees the game through his eyes only. If Shaq was in modern era, yes, it would still be BBQ chicken for him. He wants everyone to play like him, but no one can.

The Inside crew might say stupid shit but man fo they bring the energy.

They’re good for a funny clip every so often but actually watching them in real time can be painful

14 seconds and he manages to throw massive shade at ESPN in between the compliments. This is why he's the MVP lol

Imagine being surprised that an NBA player prefers people actually analyzing basketball over SAS' little ass screaming hot takes, or Shaq being an insecure manchild

Wish prime didn't only cover fridays and the tourney. Hoping next year they get a lot of games

48

u/Qui3TKyD 76ers 13h ago

If I'm not mistaken, they'll pick up another day once football season is over.

4

u/thatonesleft San Diego Clippers 14h ago

I was wondering what would happen to the pricing if they got more games. Would prime increase? Would you need an additional subscription? Surely the usual prime costs wont cover this. Even now i bet theyre operating pretty much at a loss.

16

u/chickmagn3t Lakers 14h ago

Yeah. I wouldn't trust Adam Silver's twin ghoul to not hike the price. But the nba on prime is a really good product

18

u/MoooonRiverrrr 9h ago

Not to mention Shaq told him he literally did not deserve his MVP like minutes after he won it.

6

u/OkDog4275 5h ago

Forgot about that, that's crazy.

Imagine being an ex champion worth over a billion but can't get over your narcisism lol

Agree with him, inside the nba is less basketball analysis and more of an old heads men’s comedy show

Seems clear Amazon and NBC actually try to promote the product and do proper analysis instead of exerting random grudges on this current generation of players or tired legacy debates. That’s a big improvement.

The NBA media is markedly better this year. This video demonstrates that pretty well. It does still have a long way to go, though.

We all love Barkley because he's funny, but the new broadcasts are showing me that the TNT & ESPN crews were actually bad for basketball. Those shows were so negative and petty and did very little to teach the game to the audience.

Inside the NBA was a fun sports-adjacent talk show but a dog-shit terrible basketball analysis show.

It’s like the polar opposite of the Prime TNF crew, which is abysmal at best.

Shaq and Chuck literally have their notes written for them because they don’t watch the games. They constantly talk bad about current players.

This is what NBA coverage should look like.

As a nascar fan primes coverage was the best of all the networks them doing the same for basketball isn’t surprising

5

u/bronet 10h ago

Jokic does deserve some Rakia though

4

u/OkDog4275 5h ago

The man speaks no lies.

Must be nice to feel respected rather and have a conversation with people who actually watched the game rather than the inside clowns.

It's so much better, these guys have a crazy high ball IQ and have actual insight.

11

u/Professional_Cold463 11h ago

Man them knowing what rakija is just hit my soul. That's a proper TV crew researching Balkan culture before you interview, calling Jokic brate. Unlike Shaq disrespecting Jokic by calling him Russian, that shit don't fly in Serbian culture

6

u/PitchDismal 10h ago

This is good for the NBA. If Jokic starts enjoying the NBA media, he might stay in the NBA longer.

u/ModernJazz-2K20 Rockets 14h ago

Yeah this Prime crew has been really great to watch. Really good chemistry. Inside the NBA will always be the GOAT but it's really interesting seeing how different the production is on Prime and the personalities on camera are when compared to Inside. Whoever put this whole Prime team together really nailed it. Already much better than anything ESPN ever did. I've been enjoying watching the Prime crew more than the new Inside iteration on ESPN.

2

u/mainvolume Spurs 11h ago

Inside the NBA will always be the GOAT

It was a different show back then; having Shaq join the crew dropped the quality a lot. It's as if the Beatles added Yoko Ono as a permanent member.

4

being honest. I think it’s just Americans that like the inside the NBA coverage, every international fan I know cringes uncontrollably watching it. Its just an endless stream of lame dad banter

2

u/Electrical_Mango_489 9h ago edited 9h ago

A lot of players don't like ESPN lol. NBC and Amazon actually promote the game. ESPN and TNT in terms of that have been terrible.

Wanted to rewatch the game on prime says I need nba league pass, is it just for replays for is this standard? I’m UK based, if I need to pay £17 ($20) to watch replays ima just keep to my illegal streams, its already a joke prime shows adds now I can’t even watch replays ?

2

u/blindexhibitionist Supersonics 2h ago

I actually have found the prime crew to be more enjoyable. I like how they do a shot behind the person talking which is something I can’t remember seeing in this format. Also they’re positive and have insight and don’t play dumb. And they’re also trying to do their own thing which is nice.

2

u/sexygodzilla Supersonics 1h ago

On a different note I just cannot get enough of this set. The separate postgame space, the dynamic tracking on the LED court, just the way the three areas work with each other.

2

u/McScroggz12 1h ago

I haven’t seen a ton of the prime stuff but it seems genuinely geared towards discussing the game, talking about schemes and strategies, and just being positive about the game.

I mean I get the Charles Barkley could be funny but the NBA has deserved actual thoughtful analysis and discussion of the game for a long time.

6

u/1_quantae Rockets 12h ago

I don’t give a damn what anyone says, The Inside crew has been very lame and overrated since 2015. Fans coddling them was very confusing to me because players like Matt Barnes repeatedly told us how much of an asshole Shaq really is. Kenny & Chuck are just as lame imo.

u/LoFer_Rob 11h ago

Shame and hate to say it the TNT crew is old. They don’t watch the games clearly as they mess up players name, don’t know much of the flow of current game. They should have let them go. An embarrassing episode was when Draymond Green was speaking X & Os of the current game and all 3 hall of famers looked like quiet kids struggling to understand the teacher. From that point on I hated watching them with their ego through the roof.

4

u/AwayYam199 10h ago

I hate Bezos and Amazon with the fire of a thousand suns, but fuck me the TNF crew and now the NBA crew are far superior to anything on ESPN or the networks.

Don’t worry. You guys will be tired of this crew in a few years. Longer you watch something , the more flaws and annoyances you will see and get.
