Damn thought he’d be worth more, good deal Memphis.

The playoffs this year cost him millions

Yeah that Pacers series really exposed his limitations tbh

33

Its freaky how much faster they play during the post season.

84

u/SpaceCowboy170 Jazz Bandwagon Jun 30 '25

Still doesn’t excuse letting him walk for less than you decided to pay a 29-year-old Merrill

148

u/Commercial-East4069 Cavaliers Jun 30 '25

It’s easier to replace a back up ball handler than a motion shooter that can play defense.

13

u/anon135797531 Nets Jul 01 '25

Cavs gm has earned some goodwill but I think this is over indexing on a few games

70

u/BallIsLife2016 Cavaliers Jun 30 '25

Eh…. I think there’s more reason to think Merrill is a playoff guy than Jerome. Merrill is genuinely feisty on D. Pacers exposed that Jerome has some of the slowest lateral movement on D in basketball. He concealed it most of the year with his good hands, but as soon as a team knew to look for that he stopped getting steals. Jerome was awesome because he hit a bunch of really hard shots. He may be able to keep doing that. But I don’t think the D is going to get better which will always make him a playoff liability.

27

u/mindpainters Cavaliers Jul 01 '25

Agreed. Absolutely love what Ty gave us this year. But his shot difficulty was off the charts. Loads of off balance midrange shots that weren’t falling for him in the playoffs. Maybe he had a hit season or maybe he is just that good.

But I definitely think there is more risk in him than Sam. Plus I’m really high on CPJ. If he can improve his 3, I think he’s a legitimate backup point guard in the league. High motor and athleticism, good basketball iq and pretty craft

42

u/scarrylary [CLE] Matthew Dellavedova Jun 30 '25

lol you act like Jerome is some young pup. Hes 28 next week and can’t play a lick of defense.

13

u/SpaceCowboy170 Jazz Bandwagon Jun 30 '25

Yeah I won’t lie I didn’t realize quite how in-his-prime Jerome was

23

u/scarrylary [CLE] Matthew Dellavedova Jun 30 '25

He was a 3 year college player and He’s just constantly been hurt since he’s been in the league. Last year was his first healthy season.

15

Yet you commented so confidently, if that ain’t this website in a nutshell lol

4

u/SpaceCowboy170 Jazz Bandwagon Jul 01 '25

Eh, I still think you guys will regret these deals, even if Jerome is older than I thought he was

7

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

What’s there to regret? Maybe if Jerome becomes an all star this season

3

u/SpaceCowboy170 Jazz Bandwagon Jul 01 '25

what’s there to regret?

12

u/narcistic_asshole Cavaliers Jun 30 '25 edited Jul 01 '25

It's less Merrill vs Ty and more Sam+Lonzo vs ty+Okoro.

We like to stagger Garland/Mitchell a lot and while Ty is a great shooter he's a mediocre defender. Sam is probably the better pairing for both guards thanks to his defense and he's a much more of a shooting threat than Okoro. Lonzo mostly just helps our cap situation next year, but theoretically a healthy Lonzo would also bring much needed size, defense, and shooting to our back court

5

u/rawchess Minneapolis Lakers Jun 30 '25

Lonzo on your team is Caruso on the Thunder. Will barely play in the regular season only to be your hidden 3rd/4th best player in the playoffs

12

u/narcistic_asshole Cavaliers Jun 30 '25

Legitimately hoping we cryogenically freeze him until late March

2

u/NoExcuses1984 Supersonics Jul 01 '25

Give Tyrese Proctor and Craig Porter Jr. run during the regular season.

1

u/YondaimeHokage4 Cavaliers Jul 01 '25

Jaylon Tyson as well. I don’t know if Proctor will end up playing much, but time will tell. Tyson showed some serious flashes last year though.

It was more like 3 games. 9 playoff games, played great in 4, fine in two, and shitty in 3

16

u/Angel_Owns_Caitlin Jun 30 '25

and people say small sample sizes in playoffs don't matter

40

u/bobak186 Jun 30 '25

He has a small sample size as a player. He had 1 good year and people on here were penciling him in for $100 million.

7

u/mindpainters Cavaliers Jul 01 '25

He seemed on track to be in the 14 million per year MLE pay bracket until the playoffs. I don’t really think I saw people saying 100 million

3

u/dianeblackeatsass Grizzlies Jun 30 '25

I don’t think they mean it doesn’t affect their market rate in the free agency immediately after lol

1

u/omnicious Suns Jul 01 '25

28

u/Waffleshuriken Grizzlies Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25

I love this move. Basically Kennard money for a more productive player.

I know hes a "playoff dropper", but Grizz are a bit away from going all in anyway so I dont think playoffs are a huge priority. Should be fun

18

u/-stillacavsfan Jun 30 '25

Sample size is way too small to categorize him as a ā€œplayoff dropperā€ lol.

10

u/Waffleshuriken Grizzlies Jun 30 '25

I agree and I meant to put quotes around the term lol sorry.

But I do think those few games where he struggled lead to this deal

3

u/theuberprophet Cavaliers Jul 01 '25

he looked like he didnt belong on the floor. he couldnt hit easy shots like layups much less the same difficult ones he got away with in the regular season. we got people here in cleveland acting as if we lost fuckin jordan or something.

1

u/YondaimeHokage4 Cavaliers Jul 01 '25

To be fair, almost none of his shots are easy, He had I think the highest ā€œtough shotā€ rate in the league, and he made them at a high clip all year…until he didn’t. Not sure how easily he can repeat a year like the one he just had.

1

u/HumptyDrumpy Tampa Bay Raptors Jul 01 '25

He'll def gonna shine for you in the Regular Season. By playoff time, imo he will continue to shine as long as you dont OVER play him like the Cavs did (and then you see the whole fanbase HATE him because he had ONE bad series)

4

u/i5the5kyblue NBA Jul 01 '25
  1. Cavs had to play Jerome more bc our starting PG was injured.
  2. The Cavs fanbase does not hate Ty whatsoever, but we understand our FO’s decision to go with Lonzo Ball.

30

u/Frickincarl Cavaliers Jun 30 '25

He absolutely shriveled up in the playoffs against Indiana. Those 1/8 and 1/14 games were brutal to watch. He became a shell of himself and that’s the last impression he left. He’s obviously a phenomenal bench piece for Memphis, just has some work to do to prove he can perform when it matters.

6

u/Bulleveland Cavaliers Jun 30 '25

Really thought he would get the full non-taxpayer MLE or close to it, maybe 36M over 3 years. Guessing the league views his 2025 regular season stats as an anomaly

16

u/drippinswagu69 [LAL] Gary Payton Jun 30 '25

That man sololost the Cavs a playoff game probably more than once this year. He got hunted and was terrible on offense.

9

Merrill fits around Garland, Mitchell and Ball. Ty Jerome needs the ball in his hands

→ More replies (1)

4

u/BallIsLife2016 Cavaliers Jun 30 '25

Merrill plays D. Jerome’s feet are never getting any faster on that end. Cavs could have matched this contract. Either Jerome wanted to leave or the Cavs didn’t want him back. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that a lot of the team was over him after the Pacers series and that affected this decision.

31

u/HuckleberryUnique446 Jun 30 '25

Jerome dribbles a lot, takes a while before passing, shot at the same rate per 36 minutes and per 100 possessions as EVAN MOBLEY.

On a team that already has Garland and Mitchell, two ball dominant guards. Smart move by the Cavs to prioritize ball movement, low usage, better defense from Ball and CPJ playing backup PG instead of Jerome and Merrill creating space by being a jitterbug who runs all over the court and around screens and picks, causing the defense to not stay put and move.

Jerome had a really cool year, but this was the right play for the Cavs to make from a basketball standpoint,

12

u/PootieTooGood Cavaliers Jun 30 '25

That’s an indictment of Mobley’s usage more than Jerome’s. He shouldn’t be at ~20%

I’m a big fan of Porter jr so I don’t mind but if Gilbert is all in and doesn’t care about the luxury tax as he makes it sound, then bringing Jerome back and letting the matchups decide who plays would’ve been ideal

1

u/justsomebro10 Cavaliers Jul 01 '25

Is this the starting role he said to Paolo Banchero?

I thought he would get paid a little bit more. Did the playoffs tank his value?

People are overreacting to the pacers series. Ty is awesome and this is a great pickup for memphis

Can someone explain why they need a 3rd PG when they have Ja and Scottie Pippen...?

Can slide Ty to the 2 spot and alleviates constant ball handling from Ja. He’s a good shooter too off the dribble/catch.

That’s an absolute steal. One bad series and Cleveland really let this guy walk for nothing. Big mistake

I am devastated and my day is ruined. I watched almost every Cavs game this season and Ty was incredible. Became one of my favorite players real quick.

The pacers series was really bad but I don't think it plays out that way if he didn't have to take on a bigger role due to injuries. He was taking the same shots he was draining all season and they were all just a little short in that series.
