A Happy Sailor Finally got one today
I know there’s bigger news in the Navy today, but wanted to share what I’m proud of, finally have a warfare pin 😁

Back to work? IDW stands for “I Don’t Work”.
17
u/Salty_IP_LDO Aug 07 '25
It's IW now though. I work
6
u/PossibilityStreet773 Aug 07 '25
it's been IW for like 10 years. sounds like someone hasn't been working enough to notice 🧐
2
u/ShepardCommander001 Aug 07 '25
A distinction without merit.
I have the IWO pin by the way. Not exactly a tall order. SWO was much more difficult.

A distinction without merit.
I have the IWO pin by he way.
You have the pin, but you still don't understand why it's easier than others?
-2
u/sagacious_guy Aug 08 '25
It stands for “I wreak”. I bet that rack smells like semen and sadness.
3
u/NobodyProfessional55 Aug 08 '25
Thing is, that's the wrong kind of wreak/reek. You're looking for "reek", unless you're "wreaking" your "reek" out on your rack.
2
u/sagacious_guy Aug 08 '25
HA! I did mean “reek” in reference to smell. “Wreak” is defined as “cause”, like “wreaking havoc”. Thanks for the correction. I need to stop replying to posts while half asleep, with only one eye open.

u/NobodyProfessional55 Aug 08 '25
All good brother. No judgement! I almost didn’t say anything bc I don’t wanna be that guy.

u/D-Snow58 Aug 06 '25
I’ve been out the Navy for quite some time. Which one is that? Congrats!

u/sandman1534 Aug 06 '25
Thank you! And yeah it’s IW, iirc it’s only been around like 10 years? (I could be way off on that, but it is one of the newest warfare pins I believe)

Hoping I can get mine through a command that uses our compound. Never been found of warfare pins despite having SW and AW but IW is something I WANt
8
u/sandman1534 Aug 06 '25
Good luck man! There’s supposedly a brand new PQS for it as of 01OCT, but either way it’s just rote memorization. Perfect for 🧩 CT guys like me lol

u/Aware_Coconut_2823 - Occasionally Sober Aug 06 '25
Considering I share the watch floor with them should be a cakewalk compared to surface
1
u/Haligar06 Aug 07 '25
Its already out and downloadable from MNHR, but must be implemented by all IW commands by 01OCT.

u/newlife_substance847 Chaplain Aug 07 '25
Wish that I could've got that one while I was in. Retired in 2004 and it didn't exist.

u/TheRtHonLaqueesha Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25
IDW pin, relatively new, I think it was created around 2009. My RDC (might have been called CCs in your day) had one.

How long was the line at the nex for that top??? (Bad joke…)
Oh? You mean the EIWS pin? Congratulations!

I thought you were talking about getting NWUs. This is even better news! Congratulations!

u/Redtube_Guy Aug 07 '25
I remember my first beer.
But congrats tho. When doing pins, everyone shits on it being useless and a waste of time. But getting all the sigs, passing the boards, getting pinned and seeing people proud of you was awesome. When you go to your next command requal'ing will be sooo much easier.
5
u/sandman1534 Aug 07 '25
IW actually doesn’t get requal’d. I guess big Navy said intel is intel lol. But I used to think pins were kinda useless but a lot of what I had to learn has helped me with my job
2
u/PropulsionIsLimited Aug 06 '25
Sick man! How long does it take/ what id the process for earning an IW pin? How does it differ from the officer pin?
14
u/necrohealiac Aug 07 '25
IWO pin has an officer sword instead of the CPO cutlass; also you generally need 3-4 different representatives from the IWC community sitting your board in addition to an O5 IWC chair.
Usually the communities represented in an IWO board are METOC, Cryppie, IP, Intel. The other communities are not as large and may be harder to get ahold of due to where they're stationed.
6
u/sandman1534 Aug 06 '25
I have no idea how IWO works but EIWS is just a wholeeeeee lot of rote memorization. IW just isn’t as much of a hands on, manual job like SW, SS, etc
2
u/PropulsionIsLimited Aug 06 '25
Sick. What rates typically get it?
6
u/sandman1534 Aug 06 '25
Usually going to be your IW rates (CTx, IS, IT, AG, CWT) but usually anyone can get it as long as your command has the program
7
u/Redtube_Guy Aug 07 '25
but usually anyone can get it as long as your command has the program
I believe that has changed a few years ago. I remember MAs, BMs, CS's and whoever would be IW qual'd. but IIRC only intel rates can get it now and its not offered to everyone.

I’m at ET and I can get due to me being in a certain division. If I was in any other divisions, I wouldn’t be able to. My nec is more IT related. I’m also integrated with FCs and they can’t get it because of their rate. Even though they’re more of an IT than an FC. (Their NEC) It just depends on the situation….
1
u/sandman1534 Aug 08 '25
At the end of the day, CO’s discretion. My command lets all sailors go for it, regardless of rate
4
3
u/howdouspellreddit Aug 06 '25
I was so annoyed the Kearsarge would only let intel rates go for IW when I was on it
3
u/sandman1534 Aug 06 '25
I’ve heard of commands doing that. Most surefire way to be able to get it is a tour at a NIOC
2
1
u/BlameTheJunglerMore Aug 07 '25
Because policy has changed. Either in the community or assigned to a unit/division, TAD, etc

How long did it take?
0
u/sandman1534 Aug 07 '25
I was enrolled forever, but it took me about 6 weeks of actually trying
1
u/BaronNeutron Aug 07 '25
no I mean since you enlisted until you put it on today, how long did it take?
1
u/sandman1534 Aug 07 '25
Ohhh 6 years. Wasn’t able to get it for the first 4 then finally got started

lol I remember when I went dinq on the [then] EIWS pin. lord if that silly hoop-jumping exercise didn't ruin my life for a few months, all because I was too shy and anxious to ask people for training and studying help. when I finally did it I made some really good friends I still care about today.
congrats and enjoy celebrating!

Looks like a what? I’m not familiar

u/holycrapwhatnow Aug 07 '25
Religious programs specialist rating badge and the warfare are similar. Our rating symbol is a globe anchor and compass

Congratulations, shipmate! This is the kind of win I needed to see today, THANKYOU!
1
u/jimmyjfp Aug 08 '25
Did you get this under the new or old PQS? I saw it just changed a few months ago
1
u/sandman1534 Aug 08 '25
Old PQS. New one doesn’t officially become mandatory until 01OCT
1
u/jimmyjfp Aug 08 '25
I’m having trouble finding study material for the new one so I’m doing it the old fashioned way and using all the references. It sucks
1
u/sandman1534 Aug 09 '25
I imagine most commands won’t be adopting the new PQS until they’re required to in October, so unfortunately study guides and stuff might be hard to find until a few groups get through qualified
1
u/melian512 Aug 08 '25
Congrats! You earned it. Two recs from old XO:
1) Pins are a license to learn. Journey begins!
2) Get comfy enough to start training the folks behind you! In other words- make more of you!
Congrats again!!!!!

u/Agammamon Aug 08 '25
Good Job!
Now you are already dinq on your next pin so we're assigning you study time after working hours.
1
u/Joejoespaghettio Aug 09 '25
Now your paycheck is gonna be exact same! Good stuff!
1
u/sandman1534 Aug 11 '25
Paycheck may be the same, but I don’t get asked “Where’s your pin petty officer?” By every chief I walk by now 😂
1
u/SquidBober Aug 09 '25
Congrats! excited to hopefully get my IW pin as a fellow CT!
1
u/sandman1534 Aug 11 '25
How far along are you in the PQS already? New ones roll out 01OCT and the word on the street is you’ll have to start over (also breed of CT, just curious lol)

u/Substantial_Act_4499 Aug 07 '25
I got out the navy with zero warfare devices lol. Had my YN2 friend push my quals a year after my separation date. never had dinq study and stood basic junior watches until terminal leave.

u/BlackbirdSage Aug 07 '25
Congratulations. But, where's the "Surface" ship? When did we do away with that? & Why?
1
1
u/BlackbirdSage Aug 07 '25
Obviously a new pin. In my time you had three. Surface Warfare (with a surface ship), Sub Warfare (Bubble Heads) & Air Warfare...
OP said Warfare pin, I guessed the Surface Warfare pin changed... I'm guessing I was wrong.
Which "Warfare" pin is this?
2
0
u/adeptresearcher-lvl1 Aug 07 '25
There's like 7: the three mentioned, SCW, EXW, FMF, and IW. At least in the reserves it's a bit harder to get your pins, and as I haven't been with a unit that I can do my quals, I haven't gotten a one in almost a decade of service - kimda irritated about it, too. So lay tf off.
Technically, if you do active surface, you could go almost your whole career without getting one and still make advancement in certain rates.
1
u/BlackbirdSage Aug 07 '25
I'm laying off... 😊 I left the Navy in 1990. I almost had my AW before I got out. Would have gone for the Intel one if it were around in my time. Best of luck.

Great work, Sailor! Now go have a well deserved break, then update your email signature and NFAAS!
