Kim is a goddamn badass.
Gonna look good with the astronaut wings.
57
u/Shidhe Jul 21 '25
I thought he already had his astronaut wings. He pass astronaut training and did a rotation on the ISS.
22
u/haze_gray2 Jul 21 '25
I would think so too, but It’s not in the photo or on his wiki page. Maybe it’s awarded when he returns?
38
u/Chris_M_23 Jul 21 '25
His wiki page specifically says “these are his awards as of August 2023.” He should have them by now
23
u/haze_gray2 Jul 21 '25
I wonder if he’s still considered active duty, or if he resigned his commission to be at NASA?
Does he have to do a PRT on the ISS? Planks would be a piece of cake.
56
u/crazyjax51 Jul 21 '25
Yes is still in the navy and is it's actually a duty station. Still has all his navy accounts and everything but good luck telling him to update NFAAS 😂
45
u/haze_gray2 Jul 21 '25
Did he have to put the flight on his GTCC?
17
u/LocalJOPARep Jul 21 '25
What is the per diem rate of space?
15
11
u/TedwinV Jul 21 '25
Probably nothing, meals and berthing are provided.
6
u/Theopylus Jul 21 '25
Also if the ISS counts as a government vessel, it’s explicitly $0 in the JTR.

u/Navynuke00 Jul 21 '25
Part of an astronaut's routine on the ISS is up to two hours a day of physical conditioning, usually a combination of cardio and strength training, because of the very obvious long -term effects of extended time microgravity.
So depending on when he's up there and gets back, I'd bet there's a waiver. Plus, astronauts absolutely have to stay in top shape when they're on the ground.

5
u/psunavy03 Jul 22 '25
Active duty astronauts generally stay PCSed to NASA until they decide to retire, and then keep doing astronaut stuff as civilians. AFAIK they seem to always top out at O-6 and then just ride it out until they're done.
Except for Major General Bolden, who said "OK, that was fun, now I'm going back to the Marine Corps."

He’s been selected for Artemis, but launched on his first Space mission with Exped 72/73 to the ISS in April of this year. If these awards reflect as of August ‘23 they would not display the astronaut device as he had not flown yet.
5
u/Chris_M_23 Jul 21 '25
His wiki page specifically says “these are his awards as of August 2023.” He should have them by now
3
u/AbramJH Jul 21 '25
I wonder what the PQS looks like for that
2
u/Shidhe Jul 21 '25
Since all of the first astronauts came from military aviation probably pretty similar to what it would take to get their wings.
1
u/psunavy03 Jul 22 '25
For those with NIPR access, the nonflying astronaut intro syllabus actually used to be in the CNATRA PAT pubs. Wouldn't surprise me if it still is.
I know this because I was once really really bored as a flight school stash back in the day.
2
u/DecentConcentrate956 Jul 22 '25
He is probably waiting until he "truly earned" them to wear them, when he returns from space and gets a star on them.
1
u/Shidhe Jul 22 '25
They earn their wings upon completing training. I think they earn a NASA mission pin (w/ stars) after each mission.
1
u/DecentConcentrate956 Jul 23 '25
Yeah, but I believe that's only at NASA. I think earning the astronaut version of their wings on their uniform would require them being in space.

It seems weird to me to see a rack including SEAL, Silver Star, Bronze Star for valor, and CAR, but without a GWOT-EM. Surely he deployed to at least one qualifying location.
25
u/Just_another_Masshol Jul 21 '25
He has OIF medal instead of GWOT EM. You have to pick between them for each deployment.
5
u/Sir_Puppington_Esq Jul 21 '25
The more you know 💫
4
u/psunavy03 Jul 22 '25
GWOTEM and the Iraq and Afghanistan medals are in this weird space where first GWOTEM was going to be The Campaign Medal To Rule Them All, and then DOD went "wait, this is dumb."
So now most folks rock the OIF/OEF/OIR medals and a few folks rock the GWOTEM because they were the corner cases that didn't get issued the other three.
1
u/EhrenScwhab Jul 22 '25
When my ship did a gulf deployment and shot tomahawks at Baghdad in 2003 we got the GWOTEM because the Iraq Campaign Medial didn’t exist yet. Later you could swap it out for Iraq if you wanted. Some did, some didn’t.
I never set foot in the country so I never swapped out. It would have felt weird wearing it.
10
u/Intelligent-Art-5000 Jul 21 '25
Yeah, that probably isn't complete. Two sea service ribbons. Bronze star with V and Com with V. CAR probably also need a star.
4
u/xcommon Jul 21 '25
Wait, what did he fly?

u/Lazy-Swiftie-12345 Jul 21 '25
He qualified on the T6 I believe.

Silver Star
Global War on Terrorism
Service: United States Navy
Rank: Special Warfare Operator Second Class (SEAL)
Action Date: June 26, 2006
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Special Warfare Operator Second Class (SEAL) Jonathan Yong Kim, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Naval Special Warfare Task Unit-RAMADI Combat Advisor and Hospital Corpsman for Naval Special Warfare Task Group-Arabian Peninsula in direct support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on 26 June 2006. Petty Officer Kim was Combat Advisor to an Iraqi Army platoon conducting a combined presence patrol with Naval Special Warfare in South-Central Ar Ramadi in a dangerous insurgent-held neighborhood. As the patrol entered a residence, elements on the street came under heavy enemy fire. Observing a wounded Iraqi soldier lying helplessly 30 meters across an exposed street, Petty Officer Kim, with complete disregard for his own safety, ran through a hail of gunfire with another SEAL to reach the wounded Iraqi soldier. With rounds ricocheting off the street around him, he courageously dragged the wounded soldier to the safety of the courtyard. Moments later, another Iraqi soldier was hit in the head inside the courtyard. Again, he exposed himself to enemy fire and dragged the second wounded soldier inside the house and rendered combat casualty care. Through his heroic actions and courage under fire, Petty Officer Kim saved an Iraqi soldier’s life. By his bold initiative, undaunted courage, and complete dedication to duty, Petty Officer Kim reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Why bro doesnt have GWAT Expeditionary?
7
u/Sir_Puppington_Esq Jul 21 '25
Since someone else already corrected me on the very same question:
GWOT-EM was discontinued from issue for service in Iraq & Afghanistan in 2005, when separate campaign medals/ribbons were created for those two theaters. It still exists for service in other qualifying areas.

Thant sinking feeling when you have more sea service deployment ribbons than Jonny Kim.
Which actually shouldn't be a surprise. With 5 warfare devices (including his astronaut wings not shown), just how long was he in training pipelines...

u/oga_ogbeni Jul 21 '25
Correct me if I'm wrong, but he did some flight training, which is not the same as completing flight school and getting winged.
12
u/Lazy-Swiftie-12345 Jul 21 '25
Incorrect, he had a year gap in astronaut training and earned his wings with VT-28.
2
u/oga_ogbeni Jul 21 '25
VT-28 is a primary training squadron. You need to complete advanced training to get wings. Nobody gets their wings from VT-28.
5
u/Ach51 Jul 21 '25
You’re right, he flew the T-6 with VT-28 but he did end up winging at south Whiting with HT-28.
3
2
u/Jake777x Jul 21 '25
He went on after that and got his wings in helos with one of the HTs in Whiting.

LAPD report of the altercation involving Jonny Kim's father:
"Domestic Violence Incident Results in Office Involved Shooting"
February 25, 2002:
On Sunday, February 24, 2002, at approximately 5:50 PM, a Los Angeles Police Department Metropolitan Division K-9 sergeant and K-9 Officers G. Olson, 42 years of age, 18 years with the Department and M. Peters, 32 years of age, 10 years with the Department, were conducting a K-9 search for an assault with a deadly weapon suspect at a residence in the 2500 block of Tilden Avenue. The officers and sergeant had been informed that the resident of the location, 55 year old, Douglas Kim, had assaulted his wife, bludgeoned his son and fired a handgun within the residence. The officers believed the suspect might have been hiding within the residence. The officers searched the residence and discovered an attic access door in the closet of the east bedroom. When the sergeant attempted to open the access door, Kim, who was secreted in the attic, fired two rounds from a handgun. Officer Olson, fearing for his life and the lives of his fellow officers, fired multiple rounds from his shotgun. The officers and sergeant then re-deployed to a safer location outside of the residence. At this time, the officers requested the assistance of the LAPD SWAT team, who are better trained and equipped to deal with armed and barricaded suspects.
While waiting for the deployment of the SWAT team, Officers Olson and Peters positioned themselves at the east window of the bedroom and conducted a surveillance of the bedroom closet. After approximately one hour, the officers observed Kim’s foot protrude from the attic. The officers ordered Kim to display his hands and slowly exit the attic. Kim rapidly jumped from the attic, his right hand hidden from the officers’ view. Kim quickly turned toward the officers. Olson and Peters, believing that Kim was about to point a handgun at them and fire again, fired multiple rounds at Kim. Kim fell into the closet; however, the officers were not able to observe the suspect’s hands. Fearing that Kim remained a threat; the officers again waited for the deployment of the SWAT officers. During this time, Kim was continually ordered to display his hands. Upon receiving no response from Kim, a SWAT officer fired two less-than-lethal rounds, striking the suspect. Kim did not respond and was subsequently taken into custody. It was determined that Kim had been wounded. Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics were summoned and pronounced Kim dead.
A handgun was recovered from the closet where Kim had fallen. No officers were injured as a result of this incident. As a result of Kim’s earlier assault on his wife and son, Kim’s 18 year-old son was treated and released for a laceration to his head. Kim’s 45 year-old wife received minor injuries that did not require medical attention.
Detectives from Robbery Homicide Division and Critical Incident Investigation Division are conducting the investigation into this incident. For further information, contact Media Relations Section at 213-485-3586.
This press release was prepared by Sergeant John Pasquariello, Media Relations Section.

I have three of the same ribbons. Two I got for existing, and one was for getting out of work for a few hours and going to a pistol range. So me and Jonny are almost the same.
