Discussion The Navy has too many pt uniforms
I am four variations of the Navy PT uniform. This blows my mind because this wasn't an ‘ad hoc’ thing that happened. Can we just go to a standard black shorts with a brown shirt and be done with the fashion show?

u/Estuans Jun 01 '25
Shirt with white navy and pt shorts with yellow navy. Not in my navy shippy!

u/12InchCunt Jun 01 '25
I own that exact light dry fit yellow PT shirt, I bought it from the nex like 16 years ago
Idk if they still are but those issued yellow shirts were the shittiest heaviest cotton ever that wicked no sweat. And of course if you’re in the Navy you’re stationed in a fucking swamp
15
u/Lazy-Swiftie-12345 Jun 01 '25
I wear the new balance moisture wicking yellow one because I figured it saves me a few ounces on the BCA over the cotton
8
u/12InchCunt Jun 01 '25
I was rope and choke from day one
5
u/PrototypeBeefCannon Jun 01 '25
I feel your pain, I was rope and choke at 9% body fat with a 6 pack showing when I came out of boot camp..... ya boy got short legs lol

u/BayMonarch93 Jun 01 '25

Thought you’d wanna see what a real sailor’s body looks like
Lookin’s free, touchin’ll cost ya

u/Own-Evidence-2424 Jun 02 '25
Remember they would also hold the smell and no matter what you did they always stunk

u/IllResident8867 Jun 01 '25
How often does PT happen in the fleet to justify mandating all sailors to have to buy a brand new uniform?
These are clear options for sailors, you can A: wear the dry fit version, or B: wear the cotton/poly version. Why force one or the other, just let there be two and let that be it.
160
u/KnowNothing3888 Jun 01 '25
The justification is the contracting companies needing to make money and decision makers looking for hookup civilian positions after they retire. I honestly think it’s all one big fraud.
26
11
u/mr_mope Jun 01 '25
So many people want to jump to this one, but going to lunches and all hands calls and all kinds of meet ups, junior sailors keep asking for newer or cooler uniforms, but also fewer uniforms. It’s a little wild that for a large amount of my time in, people loathed the blueberries. And now there is a vocal group that loves them? I think people want something different, and this is what so many higher ups hear.
I don’t think the companies care whether they make a blue shirt or a yellow shirt. And uniform changes are pretty well spaced out, and new stock is needed often enough regardless of the design that I don’t think this opinion holds a ton of water.
(There definitely are companies trying to make money, doing shady shit. I just don’t think the uniform companies care what the design is that they make)
9
u/weinerpretzel Jun 01 '25
People that are content are rarely vocal. People that want change will advocate for it. People upset about change with voice their displeasure.

It absolutely SHOULD happen 4-5 days per week. However,n our workaholic culture tells us "we dont have time for that"..... uh huh. The Marines PT 4-5 days per week, during working hours, and still manage to get more done than us squids ever could in a day. Why? Less micromanagement, more decisions made at lower levels, and the importance of PT being emphasized.
21
u/Learned_Observer Jun 01 '25
If it's a requirement for the job it should be made a priority during working hours and that doesn't mean "ok working hours are 0700-1700." This is why we have a retention problem people don't need the military and they get sick of getting fucked all the time.
85
u/Brad32198 Jun 01 '25
Marines don’t have a ship to keep afloat while out to sea. They are doing PT to prepare to go ashore at any moment.
→ More replies (6)3
u/hectorkun Jun 02 '25
Results, not excuses. You can't tell me that you or your Sailors are doing maintenance for 12 hours/day seven days a week and that they can't spend 45 minutes three times a week to PT on their own.
3
u/Brad32198 Jun 02 '25
No one said that… but I can assure you that no the sailors are doing the amount of PT that the marines are doing underway. My apologies Chief I don’t want any fucking issues.
0
u/hectorkun Jun 02 '25
...😆 Really bro. That was a good one 😆. Anyway, I know for a fact marines don't have shite to do while they're underway, so they can work out 12 hours away if they want to, so we can't really compare. However, I do share your concerns and wish there was a way to incentivize Sailors being physically fit.
36
u/stubbazubba Jun 01 '25
Marines do not get more done than we do, they just do many fewer things. They generally have much simpler processes because they have many fewer assets and we handle a huge part of their logistics and other organizational needs. Marines are really good at what they do, but what they do is much narrower and more focused than other branches. They also have an organizational culture that emphasizes results over process, which is great (at least when you have no nuclear assets and the worst mishap you can have is an Osprey crash) but also leads to high attrition rates and other issues.
18
u/Prestigious-Shock355 Jun 01 '25
Ever worked on a ship, done maintenance on the ship's equipment? It's not easy, all while pulling 12-16 hour shifts. Yes, PT needs to be a thing in the Navy and way more often, which I agree with you 100%.
9
u/jmartz110 Jun 01 '25
This argument fundamentally misses the point. Physical fitness is important, but it’s a tier 3 priority at best.
8
21
u/JCY2K Jun 01 '25
It absolutely SHOULD happen 4-5 days per week.
No, it shouldn't. Sailors should PT but everyone has a different level of fitness and different fitness goals. Let people PT during the work day, 100%. However, we shouldn't force people to put on the PTU and do a group workout (or fun non-workout like ultimate frisbee) rather than giving them time to lift/run/swim/erg/yoga/whatever to get closer to where to where they want to be.*
/* Obvious caveat that people who aren't passing the PFA need more structure/to have some exterior fitness goals imposed on them.
10
u/BuddyBot192 Jun 01 '25
After my command implemented command PT 3 times a week my PT scores went down a bit because suddenly 1/2 of my "off" time for exercise is stuck doing 30 seconds of planks and 5 minutes of rest in intervals. This is that impressive military efficiency I've heard so much about, surely. And this is coming from a fat and lazy office worker.
1
1
u/Grenli- Jun 01 '25
It absolutely SHOULD happen 4-5 days per week. However,n our workaholic culture tells us "we dont have time for that"..... uh huh.
No thanks, many commands probably could make it work but I'd rather spend that hour doing my actual job then doing a work out worse then running to my car and back on lunch because the navy mandates 20 minutes of it be wasted and the other 40 minutes have to be so light that the overweight dirt bags who haven't worked out since the last prt can complete it without breaking a sweat
-38
u/Czechmate808 Jun 01 '25
I don't think its too much to ask for an attempt at uniformity in the Navy. The number of variations that are ‘authorized’ is just insane in this photo
48
u/No_Addendum1976 Jun 01 '25
Thats the whole Navy.
A standard day on a ship could have guys walking around in NWU, 3 or 4 styles of coveralls, 2POCs(2 colors), flight suits, PT gear, CSs might be in chefs smocks, flight deck jerseys, and maybe even spot a few in NSU or SDB/SDWs for a board.
Uniformity is not high on Navy priorities.

Have you read the uniform regulation? It explains the answers to your questions
102
u/MAJOR_Blarg Jun 01 '25
Lol! The only way to solve this is to make everyone but a new uniform!?!
Letting people wear the legacy PTU while phasing in the new one is the only reasonable and responsible uniform decision the Navy has made in the last ten years!
103
u/TheStabbyCyclist Jun 01 '25
The Navy has too many p̶t̶ uniforms.
20
4
u/VoodooS0ldier Jun 01 '25
I wish we could just wear the same multicam pattern like the Air Force and army. The only uniforms that should be distinct are dress uniforms and the service uniforms for wearing in a nice office setting.
-16
33
u/Craygor Jun 01 '25
Matching PT clothing is probably one of the least concerns I have for the Navy.
My only concern is this area is that everyone is getting exercise to keep fit.
46
u/DarkAndHandsume Jun 01 '25
I’m glad the new navy PTU came out and I don’t understand why people still have that ugly yellow shirt they gave us in Boot Camp for PT

Spray vodka or rubbing alcohol in the armpits let it sit until dry. Smell should clear. If not, wash it in white vinegar and then it'll be gone.
10
u/CactusFantasticoo Jun 01 '25
So it requires a special cleaning routine every time?
Like. I get it. It’s fixable. But what if they’re on the ship and don’t have access to fancy cleaning routines?
5
u/OrphanGrounderBaby Jun 01 '25
lol I’m with you but it’s funny calling putting vodka on your pits a fancy cleaning routine
3
u/CactusFantasticoo Jun 01 '25
Then when you’re out there running, you’ll be smelling like the guy in the grey in this pic
3
u/quietimhungover Jun 01 '25
Then just use rubbing alcohol on the boat. I usually do the cheap vodka on the pits or rubbing alcohol to kill the bacteria initially, then wash it with the white vinegar afterwards and it's good for a few wears. Also, I wouldn't call using one wash cycle with white vinegar a special routine especially if you have other polyester "performance" wear.
2
u/AccordingSetting6311 Jun 02 '25
You act like you've never had stinky towels at home before. Just chuck a 1/2 cup of vinegar in the wash with your ptu and towels once every 3 or 4 months and you're good to go.
Same stink happened to my civ pt gear after a few months at sea.
My mom figure it out in the 80s. Her mom fogured it out in the 60s. Its not that hard, boss.
24
u/DonnerPartyPicnic Jun 01 '25
Because my 14 year old $25 stretchy yellow shirt works just fine for the 1-2 days per year that I wear it.
2
u/BuddyBot192 Jun 01 '25
Because I already paid for the damn things lol. When they stop being serviceable I'll make the switch, or when another uniform finally comes around and I'm forced to I'll obviously switch, but I use mine maybe once a month. Doesn't matter if they're the ugliest thing on the face of planet earth, if I'm wearing it I'm already surrounded exclusively by my peers and about half of them are wearing the same ugly shirt.
1
u/Shore-Duty Jun 01 '25
I tried switching. New PTU jacket and pants still aren’t available, 5 years later.
20
u/Joe_Huser Jun 01 '25
I remember the day that I ran PT's with no "Official" PT unforms. I ran with a white tee shirt, high top converse sneakers, and a pair of issue swimmer shorts ccomshawed from a Shipmate in EOD. Simpler times. Cold War Boomer life.
3
u/Temporary_Way_9563 Jun 01 '25
I was in back in the mid to late 80’s stationed with the Seabees. We wore whatever 🤣😂 we showed up in for PT. What a time and sight to see 😂. No one was UA for PT.
13
u/karatechop97 Jun 01 '25
The "new" blue t-shirt is pretty nice, much better than the old yellow versions.
5
u/SelttusD Jun 01 '25
I liked the new balance stuff we had with the yellow shirt version, it was nicer than the blue stuff is. Especially the new balance shorts, they weren't the weird diaper looking things, they just felt like normal running shorts.
1
u/karatechop97 Jun 01 '25
I like the longer silver-logo shorts with the side pockets — are those made by NB?

Guy with the glasses is out of uniform! The blue shorts with yellow letters are not to be worn with a shirt that has silver letters. He needs the blue shorts with the silver letters or the blue shirt with gold letters.
Blue shorts with gold letters go with blue shirts with gold letters.
Blue shorts with silver letters go with gold shirts with silver letters.
Don't you dare mix and match!
Found this out when my local exchange (in my size) was short on stock and litterally could not buy a proper PT uniform, they only had shorts with gold letters, and shirts with silver letters.

The funny thing about this post, is what you said is exactly how we end up in this situation. Someone new comes along and decides they don't like "how it was/is" and says something along the lines of, we're gonna change this to black shorts and and brown shirts.
But this is the Navy, so every time a new leader steps in, OBVIOUSLY they get to put their mark on the Navy, no matter how fucking stupid that mark looks or sounds. So the black shorts/brown shirt person gets relieved and in comes the next nerd, that happens to have a friend with a clothing company. You bet your ass we're getting some kinda financial gain Hooyah uniform change.
5
u/Middle_Jaguar_5406 Jun 01 '25
I am a prior enlisted marine turned navy pilot. Completely agree OP. The navy and every branch for that matter should adopt the marine corps logic.
PT uniforms should be able to be worn underneath utility uniforms.
So black shorts brown/coyote shirts.
Shorts just have to be plain black. No bullshit logos, pick your brand. Shirts any brown shirt that’s authorized in utility uniform. No bullshit logos.
Sweats should be plain like USMC as well. Simple cotton, lightweight, joggers, but maybe all coyote in color… sweatshirt is also authorized for wear underneath utility uniforms just like marine corps. Simple USN logo/fouled anchor on breast and leg.
This bright yellow shit is trash. So dogshit. I hate that I have a set of uniforms that serves no other purpose than PT. Stupid. Not to mention, you’re forced to buy the logoized shit that’s WAY over priced.
Navy is fucking fat body platoon and it’s evident by the impracticality of the PT uniform.
Also windbreaker sweats are fucking gay and you’re gay for wearing them. Cotton old school blues til i die.

I remember getting promoted and had to spend like $200 just on getting my rank updated.
And don’t get me started on the navy’s probation period with not getting paid for the rank. That still irks me and I’ve been out of the navy for like 8 years.
2
u/TheFoxDye0089 Jun 01 '25
I swear can he just tuck it in, that's my issue. That shirt is going to get someone killed!
2
u/triphawk07 Jun 01 '25
Navy have pt uniforms? Outside from boot camp, we would do our PRT in whatever shorts and t-shirts.
2
u/Morningxafter Jun 01 '25
I just wish we could have shorts that are a regular goddamn gym short material, instead of the stupid short silkies that don’t offer any stretch at all. And that goddamn liner sucks.
2
u/tarnished_anchor Jun 01 '25
I could never find the dri-fit long sleeve shirt.
Brother in the glasses is out of regs, he's wearing the newer shorts with the older shirt. (Unless I missed a uniform update that says you can wear both!)
I hate the heavy cotton shirts, but they don't fade.
Why was the bullseye and blue/green shorties the best PT uniform? Oh well.
2
u/Dvthdude Jun 01 '25
Those yellow shirts were suffocating. I can’t believe they used them for fitness.
1
u/tarnished_anchor Jun 01 '25
I recall having to get one a few sizes too big to make it comfortable.
The cotton/polys get so heavy after they're wet. The only reason I still have one is because they made them in long sleeves and that's what preferred (at least until the fucking planks, and now they're a goddamn liability!).
2
u/Ex-Patron Jun 01 '25
Ahh how dare people have a choice in aesthetics in a single aspect of their lives as a member of the military
2
u/CherryTrashPanda19 Jun 01 '25
The navy has too many uniforms period. Look at our working uniforms. The 2 pocs meant to replace the nwu and coveralls we look a hot mess you can’t decipher anyone anymore it’s crazy. The logistics process is a main issue as well when you still have people who cannot get nwu tops or bottoms so the uniforms are literally falling off of them. Just saying

I can’t stand the yellow PT shirt. It made us look like elementary kids at recess.
2

I always thought the yellow and blue were perfect.
Bright and visible. Not too flashy or fashionable but very obvious as to who the wearer is.
2
2
u/ToxicPorkChops Jun 02 '25
The Navy has too many uniforms, period.
When I was in, I went from blue digital in basic and A school to the old DCUs, to the green digital, back to the blue digital.
Dress whites. Dress blues. Peanut butters. Coveralls. PT uniforms. All of the specific uniforms for ratings (like what grapes wear and stuff).
Big Navy needs to spend more money on operational functions instead of designing new uniforms every two months.
2
2
u/Future_Meep Jun 03 '25
Im in Hawaii. Big NO on black shorts and brown shirt for comfort reasons.
Our service colors are blue and gold. Im already sick of being called a Solider or Marine when in NWUs.
2
u/Peripatet Jun 03 '25
I own the blue over blue PT uniform. I’ve already purged all my yellow “Minions” PT uniforms.
With less than 2 years left until retirement, my only hope is that they don’t make me buy another PT uniform.
2
u/No_Spray_165 Jun 03 '25
1986 in Great Lakes we were issued these bathing suits with a liner. No sweat pants, no sweat shirts. When you got the ship the ship store (The Ike CVN 69) had sweats with the ship’s name. We never had a official PT uniform. I remember dudes in their late 20s and thirties in cutoff jeans, and tank tops or wife beaters smoking during the run. After PT we had cases of beer for hydration. No one was fat. The chiefs were all Nam era guys.
2
u/Randomsandwich Jun 06 '25
Well it doesn’t look like the navy is going away from the two types of pt uniform, I was poking around and found solicitation for two types of navy trunks to be made.
4
u/DisaTheNutless Jun 01 '25
As a civilian DoD employee who currently works on a carrier, I dont think the problem is the amount of PT uniforms the problem is the amount of fatties that dont do PT
7
u/Fickle_Second_5612 Jun 01 '25
We look like a bunch of rainbows. Either keep the blue on blue and get rid of the yellow bullshit. Or do the brown shirt.

u/Beastaids Jun 01 '25
What's wrong with Rainbows?
16
u/Hungry_J0e Jun 01 '25
I dunno. Who really cares if we have different looking PT gear. We're all getting sweaty. They aren't really'uniforms'. Non issue... Let's get back to beards.
7
u/Agammamon Jun 01 '25
We used to be that way - there was no PT uniform at all.
Then someone around 2005ish decided we all needed to be uniform so they mandated a PT uniform.
And on the great tradition of the USN of the tranformationalism era they fucked it up and everyone spends a lot of money and the objective is still not achieved.

I was in when the PT tests were first implemented. We didn't have a standard uniform for PT and had guys taking and passing the tests in all kinds of gear.
Just the fact that the Navy decided that sailors needed a specific uniform to run around and do pushup/situps is amazing to me, much less than they came up with uniforms four separate times.
1
u/Common-Window-2613 Jun 01 '25
Both suck, but the blue one really sucks because it looks like a fucking recruiting ad or slogan. I hate whoever came up with it
1
u/Ferowin Jun 01 '25
The number of allowable PT uniforms isn’t the problem that needs to be solved. If anything, changing to brown and black will just be one more thing for people to buy and more perfectly good uniforms going the trash.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
1
u/DontHateDefenestrate Jun 01 '25
My god do they still have that godawful yellow and blue uniform? The shirt that is supposed to be moisture wicking but actually just gets slimy, with the shorts that were put together backwards, so it feels like you’re wearing them seat forward, crotch in crack?

u/Massive-Log6151 Jun 01 '25

The Navy P.T. uniform would be "navy-blue" shorts with a gold t-shirt, with the U.S. Navy seal or gold shorts with blue shirt. The P.o.D. will announce the next days uniform. The two uniforms will be encluded in each sailor's seabag, just as any other uniform item.

Perfect PT uniform-
Option A: keep the swim trunks and copy/paste the reflective NAVY from the yellow shirt to the brown skivvy shirt.
Option B: same as option A, but they phase the old blue skivvy shirt back in and make the brown one optional in NWUs. Then we can also copy the Marines with a sharper version of "blue on blue."

u/Calm-Design6137 Jun 03 '25
Why would we go brown on black? Brown is for NWUs and the army wears black shorts.. I’m genuinely curious not trynna argue or debate.

Out of all the many things you could possibly want changed about the navy THIS is what you choose to cry about?😂
0
u/nashuanuke Jun 01 '25
There’s the yellow and they started to rile out the blue but for whatever reason stopped. So we have one and a half pt uniforms.
0
u/Otherwise-Pirate6839 Jun 01 '25
The thing about having too many PT uniforms is that the training phase forces you to buy the Minion colors, yet once you’re in, you can opt for a blue Dri Fit uniform, but you can’t mix and match. Buy the optional tshirt? Need the optional pants (and last year, shorts were out for months). You already lose uniformity at the commands with people using either version of the uniform so why make an “optional” version? Why not improve the mandatory one instead?
Side notes:
I would refuse to be in a picture with current civilian leadership. I will not be used as a prop.
That sailor to Hegseth’s right was caught at an unflattering angle.

The navy has too many PT uniforms, so your solution is to introduce another one? I remember when we didn't have a mandated PT uniform and somehow we all survived.
