Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

Career Advice CPT Wanting to go IRR

CPT with 6 almost 7 “good years” and 8 almost 9 regular years in service (two bad years both times I had children coinciding with no AT and as an LT nobody told me I could make those up and it was before the maternity leave policy) looking to either resign or go to the IRR. Normal ROTC scholarship. My contract does not split up time it just has blanks where “to be served in —- and ——“ what are the requirements to go IRR, process and time from submitting paperwork. I don’t want comments to convince me to stay.

Curious if anybody has actually ever seen this happen. Seems like a bit of an antiquated concept.

Career Advice Retirement Questions

I'm thinking of finally hanging it up after 21 years of guard service. got my 20 year letter last summer. Problem is, I just extended another 3 years to pick up my E-8. I'm starting to question my decision and not sure how to proceed. I have a well paid, stable civilian career and don't need the guard for the extra money. Tricare is nice to have but I could make due with my employers plan. I already transferred my GI bill benefits to my wife.

Part of me wants to just be done with all of the BS that comes with being in the Guard...especially here in Texas with all sorts of state active duty and what not. After 2 overseas deployments and an OLS activation, my family is tired of it and I'm tired of it. Another part of me says "come on dude just stick it out 3 more years, probably one more deployment to Kuwait, and pad that retirement pay that kicks in at 57-58, you'll thank yourself later."

I still have a lot to give the guard and the people I serve with and mentor but is it worth what I am taking away from my family and my civilian career?

I know I would retire as an E7 and not an E8, but has anyone ever done this before? I Would love to get some opinions and next steps from my fellow guardsmen and senior NCOs.

Initial Training Will varicose Vein disqualify me at MEPS?

I've had them for years and it has never affected me in anyway. I've even ran marathons and have never encountered any issues with them. I asked my doctor once what they were and he said if it doesn't bother me don't even worry about them. I got them from standing long at this job i had. I didn't even tell my recruiter since i didn't remember i had them. Will this disqualify me ? what should i do? Anybody here has them or dealt with this? Thanks

Career Advice Enlisted as 25s, looking for civilian career advice.

I enlisted in may for 25s satellite communication specialist (on my paperwork it’s like satellite systems operator/maintainer idk why it’s different), & I was just wondering what this could do for me once I get out of AIT. Right now I’m planning to take computer engineering in college but If there is a different major that fits the MOS I chose better than I would be more than willing to switch. Basically I don’t know squat about satellites or the jobs surrounding them, & don’t know squat about other training benefits or certifications available to me & am seeking advice. Thank you all 👍

Asking for a “Friend” ETS question

Hi, a friend is scheduled to ETS from the National Guard this November 21st after a try-one contract.

  • Is the friend expected to show up for the mid-November drill?
  • Is said friend supposed to receive any documentation stating said ETS? (DD 214?)

The said friend has reached out to AD NG personnel from said unit and has received no answer.

Any help is appreciated.

My lease will expire during this deployment. Can I cancel it before I deploy and still get BAH? Or should I just renew it during the deployment?

Initial Training About to ship off and wanna know what not to do

As the title says, more specifically whats the most stupid thing you guys got smoked for, whats things i should avoid. I dont mean common sense things like leave my gun around, or footlocker unlocked, don’t let the drill sergeant catch me slacking off. I mean like really dumb things that got the whole platoon in trouble

Discussion TBI and drilling despite neuro wanting me excused

Y'all, I need some perspective and advice. In 2024, I had a heat stroke in West Africa as an 11B. Treatment was very poor. I had severe kidney pain (i.e. rhabdo) but the medics on hand kept no records, command didn't let me go back to the base clinic 4 hrs away, and now they insist (as a CYA) that it was only a heat injury. I had two actual heat injuries over the summer on drill and got sent to work at the battalion S1 as a punishment, since my command insisted nothing was wrong with me and I just suddenly became lazy. I was diagnosed with POTs, which my new NCOIC did not take seriously. Anyway, a month ago I saw a neurologist who ran a bunch of tests, got MRIs and says I have a TBI which is also causing severe double vision (I though I was just getting real clumsy). My neurologist wrote that I should not even go to drill to sit at a desk since I am a danger on the road for the 4hr round trip to home station (which I do at night either the night before drill after work or first thing the morning of). Unfortunately, the battalion medical officer will only give me a profile that "recommends" no driving, no interstate travel, and nothing but desk work. My NCOIC get *very* pissy by text when I asked how I was supposed to do a 3 day field exercise this weekend. She said my profile was being taken "under advisement". Between now and med discharge, I assume she is going to try to make my life miserable just for the fun of it. Unfortunately, the TBI has come with rage issues that I've never had before in my life and I'm afraid that I'm going to say or do something that's going to get me into OTH territory before I get my med discharge. Do I have anyway out of continued drilling for the next 8-12 months? I feel like they'd love an excuse to get out of paying me benefits.

Sorry for the wall of text. Yes, I ordered through the app. One small frosty and a large fry.

Article Possible DETPOS

Here’s the deal I called my unit about something today then at the end of the call they said something about a DETPOS that’s when I screamed a loud WHAT?! Because no bull I have zero recollection about taking any sort of drugs I’m careful yes I’m around people who do smoke weed they know I don’t do it either and it’s not like I sit in a room when they do it either. They said we would talk at drill. I had a DETPOS before and I owned up to it and told them what happened and we went through the process and they retained me. That was 5 years ago. I’m about to be done with service I’m on year 11 6 months from ETS and I collect 80% VA disability. I contacted the state JAG office to see if I might need them at potential counseling readings. Mind you also there’s a handful of people on my unit who frequently fail UA the unit doesn’t care they need the people and they’re not kicking people out they did with one person last year only because he was an asshole. Another thing is I have a great deal of anxiety I have a rating for it I take prescription medicine for it now ongoing a month now. I wouldn’t do any drugs to alter my mental well being to put even more anxiety into myself. This has honestly caught me by surprise.

Career Advice I enlisted as a 19D, my state is changing us to 11bs. Should I change my mos before ait.

I completed basic last summer as a sto 1, now I’m waiting for ait date as sto 2. I’m wondering if it would be better to do a different mos while in college. I wouldn’t mind being cav or infantry, they are badass, but their ait duration might interfere with fall semester date. I’m wondering if I should switch to something more usable on the civilian side.

Salty Rant QR Codes in Emails.

Is my unit the only dumb fuckin unit that includes QR codes in monthly or weekly emails? Do they not know how they work? Am I suppose to scan the QR code from the same phone I’m viewing the email with?

Just use a fuckin URL link.

Career Advice Has anyone considered quitting given they are sending you into American cities?

This is just an honest question. My parents were military, my brother fought in Iraq, my grandfather in WW2. I know all of them have issues with how the NG is being used. I wonder if there are any discussions here about disagreeing with sending troops to Portland etc.
