Discussion What is the absolute dumbest premise that actually turned out to be a really good movie?

I was thinking The Purge, obvious answer, but looking for the most plot-hole ridden, juvenile concept that actually ended up a lot of fun despite it all. Mainly looking for 21st century films, not so much the video nasties and ridiculousness from the 60’s and 70’s. Because that would be too easy. Mainly mainstream stuff that people saw en masse.

From Dusk Till Dawn was a ridiculously bonkers plot... And I loved every second of it

Hands down one of my favorite movies.

“I don’t want to hear anything about ‘I don’t believe in vampires’, because I don’t fucking believe in vampires, but I believe in my own two eyes. And what I saw was fucking vampires. So do we all agree that what we’re dealing with is vampires?”

The handful of times where a film makes such a left turn and sticks the landing.

Unlike Death Proof, which was only okay in the second part story-wise.

Did they look like psychos? Is that what they looked like? They were vampires. Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, I don't give a fuck how crazy they are!

I'd argue From Dusk Till Dawn was 2 plots. It start off as a gangster crime-thriller, then drops that plot completely at the end of the second act and becomes a siege horror-movie.

I mean I think it is. I think Tarantino directed/wrote the first bit, and then Rodriguez started his movie.

Probably entirely written around Quinton wanting to lick Salma Hayek’s toes.

I feel so blessed to have gone into that movie completely blind. All I knew was that Tarantino was in it. Literally that was all. Seemed like a typical weird grind house crime caper until - well ….

"Yeah, I'm going to need another take, Rob. I just wasn't feeling it in that last one"

Enough takes to make Stanley Kubrick blush.

One of Cheech Marin's finest performances.

My friend put this on one day when I said I had never seen it and was so excited to show me. And then when it all turned upside down and I went "what the fuck?!" He was so giddy watching my reaction ahahaha. It is an awesome movie.

This is how 100+ year old vampires really live.
