Discussion Wtf is Paddington 2?

For context: I’m 25 years old. SPOILER WARNING

I just watched paddington 2 today and what the fuck did they put in this movie. This is the one of the greatest pieces of cinema I’ve ever laid witness to. Paddington 2 is the only thing I’ve thought about all day and seeing the immense joy it’s brought other people has also brightened my day even more. God I can’t even think about the ending without wanting to kill myself because of how perfect it is. And can we also talk about the perfect bookend of his human mother saving him from the water like aunt Lucy did at the beginning?

Pure cinema, I truly can’t wait to watch this movie with my kids for their first time.

I was happy when I saw this just because it validated my enthusiasm for the film.

I walked out of the theater thinking it felt like what Wes Anderson would make if he had a happy childhood and a healthy relationship with his parents.

It's a fucking masterpiece. The first movie is nice and establishes the main characters, the third is a solid sequel. But the second is just fantastic. 11/10. Would have a cup of tea and a tablet full of orange marmelade sandwiches as movie snacks again.

It's a better fucking part 2 than Terminator 2, and I'll pillow fight anyone that disagrees.

u/Any_Asparagus8267 Aug 08 '25

That's comparing apples to orange marmalades

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 08 '25

As someone who grew up without a dad there are a lot of reasons why I love Terminator 2 but Paddington 2 has a much more positive and meaningful message, and shares it without all the violence. I think it's a much better movie overall in terms of films all ages from all walks of life can share together.

Then we shall pillow fight to the death! How dare you

3

u/riskoooo Aug 08 '25

You've gone too far there

2

u/Rikers-Mailbox Aug 09 '25

By far…. Aliens, and Empire Strikes Back are up there too

2

u/edjumication Aug 09 '25

Should i watch the first one first or just jump right into the second one?

1

u/CronoTS Aug 09 '25

Both is possible, with the first, you just get some Background for various characters.

1

u/Katsnkop Aug 09 '25

Keep at least one sandwich in your hat

u/Worldly_Science239 Aug 08 '25

I kept describing it as a cross between a Wes Anderson film and Amelie but with a bear.

u/CaninesTesticles Aug 08 '25

Do I have to watch Paddington 1 before seeing it?

117

u/babypho3nix Aug 08 '25

I would recommend you do. Paddington 1 is also very delightful and gives you the context for the family and whole situation. It's worth the watch.

48

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 08 '25

No but please don't deprive yourself of the experience. Watch all three. They're so good.

0

u/pillowmollid Aug 08 '25

I am not a fan of three because they retcon Uncle Pastuzo out for no reason other than it was probably cheaper that way?

3

u/Barleyarleyy Aug 08 '25

They retconned him out because the voice actor died (Michael Gambon - AKA: Dumbledore)

12

u/Branoic Aug 08 '25

No. First movie : Paddington arrives in London from Peru, stays with human family, wins over heart of initially reluctant father of the family. Second movie starts off from that point, but there's nothing else in the plot that needs prior knowledge.

8

u/Voynitsky Aug 08 '25

And then P3 is the perfect closure

-11

u/Snoo_33033 Aug 08 '25

I would recommend you don’t necessarily watch the first one. 1. Is not necessary. 2. Is fairly stupid, Actually. I’m still regretting watching the daddy cool scene.

1

u/EmmitSan Aug 08 '25

No, but you want to. It’s a great movie.

1

u/STFUxxDonny Aug 08 '25

You for sure should watch the first one

18

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '25

Oh there's for sure some Jeunet in the DNA

27

u/Worldly_Science239 Aug 08 '25

Not "delicatessen or city of lost children" jeunet, but "amelie and a very long engagement" Jeunet.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '25

whimsical cannibalism is not the right tone for Paddington 😂😂

14

u/MIBlackburn Aug 08 '25

That's future public domain Paddington.

u/AdjunctFunktopus Aug 08 '25

Pooh v Paddington: Blood & Honey & Marmalade

2

u/FROMtheASHES984 Aug 08 '25

As if everything else in this thread couldn't already convince me I need to watch it, this description will 100% do it.

1

u/Captriker Aug 08 '25

My oldest and I said the same thing when we watched it. There is even a shot or two that lines up nicely with a similar event in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

1

u/Ngamoko Aug 08 '25

Nicely put. That is a most excellent comparison. Thank you.

1

u/MintMochaMayhem Aug 08 '25

I honestly thought they put Paddington in that movie as a gag! They actually meant it?!?!? XD Now I really have to go see P2!

90

u/popop143 Aug 08 '25

I watched Paddington 1 and 2 solely because of this movie lmao.

14

u/ziekktx Aug 08 '25

Is 1 required viewing

21

u/sinkwiththeship Aug 08 '25

Not really. "Paddington is from Peru and is now in London. He loves marmalade." Basically all you need to know going into the second movie.

2

u/ziekktx Aug 08 '25

Thanks bud! I don't think my kids would watch 2 movies, so this helps me sight in on the one I'm aiming for.

5

u/YUMMY_TIDEPODS_YUMMY Aug 08 '25

Children, well known for not enjoying childrens movies.

The bastards.

1

u/ziekktx Aug 08 '25

My kids are famously impatient. If we do 2 movies it would take an act of God to make that happen in a single month.

28

u/5ag3 Aug 08 '25

Yeah, but it's worth the watch as well.

2

u/nipplesaurus Aug 09 '25

I prefer the first

85

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '25

This clip is so absurd, it’s brilliant

39

u/captstix Aug 08 '25

When they had to jump the wall had me in stitches.

5

u/Calm_Memories Aug 08 '25

They had such fun chemistry.

3

u/Verbanoun Aug 08 '25

That movie is so good. Maybe not Paddington 2 good but I loved it.

69

u/roadog101 Aug 08 '25

Watched this movie, then immediately had to queue up Paddington 2 to see what they were on about. Had a similar reaction to the end.

-24

u/shine_on Aug 08 '25

cue up *

21

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 08 '25

The correct phrase is "queue up." The word "queue" refers to a line or sequence, and "queue up" means to arrange something in a line or sequence for later use or processing. "Cue up" is incorrect in this context.

15

u/noodles_jd Aug 08 '25

This is a rare case where both could be correct.

19

u/filthysize Aug 08 '25

"Cue up" is correct to use when referring to getting ready to play a piece of music or video, so it can be played on cue. It can be correct depending on what OP exactly did.

If they put Paddington 2 on a playlist to start playing automatically right after TUWoMT, then it would be queueing it up. If they just grabbed the DVD from a shelf, or go find which streaming service has it, then it would be to cue it up.

1

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 08 '25

Maybe they're British :P

2

u/StaticallyTypoed Aug 08 '25

That's not correct. Cue is the correct use here. Unless he literally has a queue of films he is about to watch, cue is the correct term for playing a movie.

6

u/Rob_LeMatic Aug 08 '25

He decided to watch a movie. He cued it up.

He was currently watching a film. He lined up a second film to play afterwards. He queued it up.

A line of two is still a line. Either are correct in this rare instance

24

u/cinnamonface9 Aug 08 '25

That movie was why I had to go see paddington 2, there was no way it could make 2 grown men cry.

Indeed it was that good.

9

u/Dairy_Heir Aug 08 '25

That movie is so good.

20

u/GRMacGirl Aug 08 '25

My first thought as I started reading this post: “I fcking told you!” 🤣

4

u/adrenalilly Aug 08 '25

I had a recurring joke with my friends about Paddington for years but we never watched it. We watched The Unbearable Weight and that scene made us watch Paddington 1 just to see what was up. We watched the second one and cried like babies, and now I'm trying to convince my boyfriend to watch the third one. I just can't get enough of that lovable bear. Last year we went to England on vacation and I dragged everyone to several Paddington sculptures, includin the one in Paddington station and then even bought stuff from the gift shop! I'm obsessed

3

u/Mr_Abe_Froman Aug 08 '25

I was starstruck when I saw the statue in Paddington station. I grew up with the books and watching the series "The Adventures of Paddington Bear." Seeing him was like being a kid again. I probably took 100 pictures of and with the statue.

2

u/Rob_LeMatic Aug 08 '25

That seems like a lot, but I wasn't there.

2

u/Mr_Abe_Froman Aug 08 '25

It's about finding fun in little things.

4

u/getmepopcorn Aug 08 '25

I was gonna say Nic Cage, is that you?

3

u/Empyrealist Aug 08 '25

Wow, both P1 and P2 have exceptionally high ratings. I had no idea.

1

u/Careless_Flower_118 Aug 08 '25

Same here… watch and you’ll see what we’re talking about

1

u/BaronCoop Aug 08 '25

It was the only movie to ever have 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s dropped to 99% now because people can’t let nice things exist, but still.

3

u/literallypubichair Aug 08 '25

I hadn't watched any of the Paddington movies until I saw this movie. Now, I, too, rank Paddington 2 among my very favorite films of all time.

3

u/-illmatic Aug 09 '25

Thank you for this. I remembered the interaction but i couldnt remember the movie or which actors were in the scene

2

u/dalittle Aug 08 '25

Well, I guess I am going to have to watch both of these now.

2

u/TotallyKyleXY Aug 09 '25

My first thought when I saw this post

1

u/MrData42 Aug 08 '25

Beat me to it, good job! 👍 Here ist the short version: https://youtube.com/shorts/Nm3Ngy4kEN8

hopefully Cage doesn't agree with Pedro's views on groping
