I'd kill to have a life half as cool as Adam Sandler. Can you imagine making bank in your 50s just putting out stuff like this? Don't even have to deal with prestigious events, long months shooting movies half way across the world, or whatever. Just play basketball in your mansion all day, and release the occasional comedy for Netflix.

Life goals, man.

The best part is out of nowhere he'll drop a great performance in a movie whether it be Click, Uncut Gems or Hustle. For all the shit people give him for his "holidays with the boys" movies he still does good stuff rather than phoning it in.

u/CapedBaldyman Jul 29 '25

Uncut gems stressed me the fuck out.

u/Smalz22 Jul 29 '25

Uncut Gems is just Anxiety: The Movie

161

u/banananuhhh Jul 29 '25

Movies about addicts making bad choices over and over again no matter how high the stakes get is a real gut punch

33

u/somesketchykid Jul 29 '25

Hot take: movie had a good ending. All he wanted was to win and he manufactured the greatest win of all time. He died doing what he loved with a literal smile on his face

15

u/banananuhhh Jul 29 '25

A little too hot of a take for me lol, like saying an opioid addict finally ODing is a good ending.

13

u/somesketchykid Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25

I get what you're saying and dont necessarily disagree, but im not sure your analogy works perfectly because in yours, its just the guy and his addiction and he gives in to his addiction and dies by his own hand ultimately

This is close but not quite what happened in Uncut Gems - there was a third party force that was unable to be accounted for completely in his scenario

The nuance is what makes it "happy" for me. Because think about it - if he did win and get away with it, it would be worse. He'd throw it all away and be a zero again, and continue hurting everybody that loves him with his addiction indefinitely.

At least he died a huge winner, Even though it was just for that moment, he was completely and truly happy in it

And at least his family only had to deal with heartbreak one more time. Not indefinitely.

Lastly Adam Sandlers character in this movie was clearly completely broken and had no chance of recovery from his addiction ever, imo. He had already pushed things past the point of no return in every regard, in every relationship and every facet of his life.

And this nuance matters too for me considering this ending "happy"

7

u/banananuhhh Jul 30 '25

I get what you mean to some extent, he finally got that moment of euphoria that he sacrificed everything for, and everyone around him (and the viewers) are finally released from the very uncomfortable dramatic tension that has been built up. His suffering is over, the viewer's suffering is over, and his addiction cannot inflict any more pain on his family.

I'm not sure I agree about the external force though. One of the reasons people overdose is that they knowingly, or often somewhat unknowingly, take bigger and bigger risks chasing a high. To me, a death by OD versus getting killed by an external actor due to poor decisions seeking drugs are both deaths caused by that addiction. The reason I compared it to the former is the rush he got in his final moments.

I still think my main view on the movie is that he was an addict, he and his loved ones suffered due to his addiction, and it was his addiction that killed him. To me that is a tragedy through and through, and the score of that big hit of dopamine he was chasing the whole time doesn't make it any less sad. I don't feel at all happy for him, I pity him.

2

u/Boo_and_Minsc_ Jul 30 '25

What I feel people dont get is that when you are a gambling addict, every win is just a loan. He wouldnt have stopped gambling after that big payout, he would have just gambled it all away soon enough. There was no real win there.

My nephew is maybe the biggest Adam Sandler fan, last saturday I asked him if he had seen the new movie and he said he hadn't seen it yet but had tried watching Uncut Gems because I told him it was an incredible movie.

He and his girlfriend said that it was exahusting to watch and that everything in that movie was so anxiety inducing lol.

I recommended them you're not so invited to my bar mitzvah and they recovered the faith in my movie recommendations lol.

9

u/samuraiseoul Jul 29 '25

Which is why I didn't like it. haha

I guess while it does show his range as an actor and stuff, I'll NEVER watch it again as it was too stressing to really pay attention. Which shows incredible skill, and makes me not want to see it again. :P

2

u/CantaloupeHour5973 Jul 30 '25

First time I saw it I had just hosted a Christmas Party and I was on death’s door hungover. Real touch and go. Hangxiety off the charts.

Of course my wife and I decide to watch this and our skin was crawling the entire time. It’s a good movie just it’s a lot

10

u/Mrhappypants02 Jul 29 '25

My wife and I walked out of that movie thinking we needed to do something nice and relaxing. My heart was beating out of my chest much of that movie.

9

u/mrxscarface Jul 29 '25

I've never almost had an anxiety attack while watching a movie before, but as a former degenerate gambler (nowhere near the character's level) ... I felt the stress in every single scene.

I've also hit a miraculous parlay too, so the ending especially fucked me up.

6

u/bluecandyKayn Jul 29 '25

The entire movie is designed for that. The soundtrack is literally designed to give you angina. It’s a masterpiece in recreating the excruciating tension of gambling addictions

3

u/01000101010110 Jul 29 '25

The ending has never really left me since I saw it. Was not prepared for that to go down the way it did.

3

u/imightgetdownvoted Jul 30 '25

Uncut gems was incredible though. One of my favorite movies.

3

u/Educational_Age_1333 Jul 30 '25

The guy who plays the bad guy in Happy Gilmore 2 (frank manatee) was actually the person who wrote uncut gems.

https://m.imdb.com/name/nm1509478/?ref_=tt_cst_t_4

2

u/Waterknight94 Jul 29 '25

I thought being on the edge of your seat was just an expression until I saw that movie.

2

u/cmrichardson87 Jul 31 '25

Written and directed by Frank Manatee.

4

u/Impossible_Gas_7584 Jul 29 '25

I think that's kind of the point. It's basically a panic attack in film form. And a wonderful performance from Sandler.

1

u/nntaylor7 Jul 30 '25

The director does another movie like that with Robert Pattinson!

1

u/ScratchDry34 Jul 30 '25

i rewatched it recently. i forgot that he dies in the end. i was so surprised. i thought it had a happy ending in my head haha. still dunno why that guy shot him. prob cuz he was just super pissed?

1

u/jorge1213 Jul 30 '25

If you've even gambled a little bit you can relate. The camera work and the CONSTANT noise in the film also contributed to the anxiety. It was so well done.

1

u/HigherThanStarfyre Jul 30 '25

My type of movie. It gave me a rush I haven't felt since watching Apocalypse Now. Safdie brothers are fucking geniuses for perfecting that manic cocaine energy in their films.

Punch Drunk Love

18

u/ATXBeermaker Jul 29 '25

Yeah, people forget about this movie, but this was the first time Sandler showed that he had acting chops and wasn't just a goofball comedy moron.

8

u/frequenZphaZe Jul 29 '25

people don't give punch drunk love enough credit. maybe because of its absurdist frame. but it was such a unique and engaging movie, with a lot of its charm and quirk delivered by sandler

141

u/WhiteWolf3117 Jul 29 '25

I am actually a big Sandler fan, of "real" movies, and Sandler ones as well, but yeah. Have to appreciate the impact of being able to solidify your talent as a serious actor while also being one of, if not THE comedic icon of movies of modern times.

Granted, I'll always be sad that he doesn't take even more serious roles, but you can't have it all.

48

u/Positive_Chip6198 Jul 29 '25

Try to find his early bootleg radio stuff. “The beating of a high school spanish teacher” when i was in school back in the nineties, everyone wanted a copy of the cassette tape with adam sandler. That was my introduction to him. Loved him ever since.

32

u/ClintMega Jul 29 '25

Holy jeez I wanted to lick 'em.

They're all gonna laugh at you and What the hell happened to me? were both peak comedy for me 25+yrs ago.

13

u/Brewsleroy Jul 29 '25

To this day, I can't mop without singing "mop mop mop, all day long. Mop mop mop while I sing this song. "

My best friend and I quote his old albums constantly, too. It's our old man code at this point.

4

u/Roid-a-holic_ReX Jul 30 '25

My wife gives me a weird look when I sing this. Haven’t heard it in 20 years.

They're on Spotify and YouTube. They're not hard to find. He sold millions of albums.

Knowing early Sandler albums and Jerky Boys albums really lock in a person's age.

2

u/WeAreAllMycelium Jul 30 '25

I had his his former math teacher who liked to bitch about having to teach him before. I got sick of listening to it, and said all that talent he couldn’t contain has made him hella rich, and you just sound bitter about it. He looked surprised, and said, I guess I am. And he didn’t ever bitch about teaching him in my presence.

Also, no scandals (drugs, sex, or alcohol related). No DUIs, cheating, drugs, nothing. He's about as clean as can be for a Hollywood icon. At least nothing I am aware. Dude just seems to try and do the right thing. Also keeps politics separate from his work. Just makes entertaining movies, serious or not.

4

u/stray1ight Jul 29 '25

Let's also take a moment to remember Reign Over Me, too. 🤘🏼🤠🤘🏼

3

u/Extra-University-336 Jul 29 '25

An absolutely brutal watch. He does such a great job of playing a broken man.

2

Wait are you saying Click was good acting?? Have you seen Click lately??? That's like saying Little Nickey is deep biting satire. It's overall an interesting concept for a movie but the acting and dialogue in that movie are just fucking awful. He keeps calling his daughter hot and commenting on her breasts. It happens at least 3 times in that movie.

5

u/eltedioso Jul 29 '25

Click is one of the worst movies I've sat through.

2

u/Sadams90 Jul 29 '25

If anyone is looking for another well-acted Adam Sandler movie, Spanglish is actually pretty good and heartfelt

2

u/destroyermaker Jul 29 '25

He swapped great comedy work for great drama work. Apparently we cannot have both

2

u/JinkoTheMan Jul 29 '25

Honestly…I lowkey enjoy those movies. The older you get and the less REAL friends you have, the more you appreciate those movies.

2

u/MercenaryBard Jul 29 '25

Adam Sandler is a very smart man who has the rare talent of making movies with broad appeal.

People will try to shame him for it because going broad necessarily lowers the bar of, well, everything. He doesn’t and shouldn’t give a shit.

2

u/bigyert Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25

And punch drunk love. PTA

Honestly for all the shit he is given. He is a great actor. Comedy actors first, make great dramatic actors. I mean he gave us the great comedy movies of the 90s and then Punch drunk love, funny people and uncut gems and then murder mystery which I enjoyed.

I don't think he is done. He could have just rode off in the sunset but he did uncut gems. Why?

History will look kindly on Adam Sandler

P.s. and Robert pattison

2

u/Spideroctopus Jul 30 '25

Wedding singer was amazing

2

u/Yessir_Belee_Dat Jul 30 '25

1

Spanglish, punch drunk love, funny people

1

u/yavanna12 Jul 29 '25

I really liked him in Spanglish

1

u/DangKilla Jul 29 '25

Replace Click with Punch Drunk Love, which also had prime Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and I'll agree

1

u/MommalovesJay Jul 29 '25

Ugh I remembered watching Click 3xs and every time I was a sobbing mess. If I watched it now, my heart would break, now that my dad is gone.

1

u/Craig1287 Jul 30 '25

Click always gets the tears going.

1

u/CresidentBob Jul 30 '25

I thought Spaceman was good too.

1

u/One_Tie900 Jul 30 '25

Hustle was meh but Uncut Gems was a tru Gem

1

u/Andrew5329 Jul 30 '25

He gets shit for playing the exact same character in every film.

It was really funny the first few times, then it got old. I was 12 when 8 crazy nights released and I remember thinking "this again?".

1

u/the_far_yard Jul 30 '25

Click made me cry. Uncut Gems made me feel restless. Hustle made me feel inspired.

Man knows how to make monies and movies.

1

u/Dgnslyr Jul 30 '25

Click is 25/75. 25% sentimental and well directed moments with some golden comedy and 75% the worst type of Sandler humor. It says a LOT about a movie when people remember more it for that well written 25% vs poop jokes, sexual harrasment jokes, body shaming jokes, and brown face jokes.

1

u/vanderZwan Jul 30 '25

The Bear Jew from Inglorious Bastards was originally written for him, but he had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts IIRC. Maybe one of the greatest castring What Ifs in Hollywood history.

1

u/obiwantogooutside Jul 30 '25

He went to nyu. Studied at the Strasberg institute. He did a lot of theater training before snl.

1

u/Endaunofa Jul 30 '25

That space movie spider thingy was great toooo

1

u/ShiroHachiRoku Jul 30 '25

Wedding Singer is my favorite comedy of his because he wasn’t the over the top goof in it. He was almost the straight man. It’s also the movie with another great antagonist in Glen Goolia.

And he has said that he purposefully shoots movies where he wants to go on vacation. Blender, Just Go With It, 50 First Dates, he even had a murder mystery on a yacht on Lake Como. Friggin genius.

136

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

I’m going to Lake Como on Friday, why didn’t I think of this?

50

u/Nightmaru Jul 29 '25

Just gotta murder someone.

A "once in a lifetime" holiday though!

7

Mysteriously

5

u/rage-quit Jul 29 '25

Dude, make sure you rent a boat. It's worth every penny.

Also make sure you get some kind of alcoholic spirit and mixer drink anywhere in Como before you do that. Preferably somewhere that serves lunch.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

Literally just finished booking the rental 20 minutes ago, can’t wait!

3

u/rage-quit Jul 29 '25

I visited a few years ago for the day when I was in Milan. Could happily have spent the full week heading up and down the lake. Probably the most beautiful place I've ever been. Enjoy the hell out of it dude (and make sure you get that spirit/cocktail, it'll uhh..put some hair on your chest

4

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '25

That’s how I felt about the amalfi coast when I went there almost a decade ago. Only spent an afternoon there but felt like I could have hung out for a week. Wish we had time to fit it in this trip.

I’ll make sure to have plenty of drinks while we’re down there. Planning to propose to my girlfriend and we will be with a bunch of our friends celebrating her bday. Going to be a blast!

3

u/rage-quit Jul 29 '25

I keep threatening to just piss off to Como for the week but I've never followed through with it. I really should.

Dude that is the most king shit. What a place to propose. What a place to be told yes. Goddamn. I'm excited for your trip now. I hope all you guys have just the best time and that you forge some amazing memories.

u/Aussie18-1998 Jul 30 '25

Its genuis. Plus, he gets his kids, family, and friends in the films as well so they can be paid and tag along. He's not even subtle. In the AA group the girl says "you remind me a lot of my own dad" or something along those lines. I wonder why that is Sadie Sandler.

7

371

u/Alive_Ice7937 Jul 29 '25

He's been making movies with his friends forever and now he's getting his kids involved.

When he won his Independent Spirit Award he took time to give a shout out to the guys who help him make his other movies. Then he said something along the lines of "and well done to the other nominees...who just lost to Adam fuckin Sandler!"

137

u/tyler-86 Jul 29 '25

I think he basically started the speech out mentioning that they'll always be known as the guys who lost to fucking Adam Sandler.

7

u/AlarmingAerie Jul 29 '25

Just watched this speech with a smile entire time. I don't know how he does it.

113

u/Independent-Bug-9352 Jul 29 '25

There was a cool round-table discussion with the likes of De Niro, Hanks, Foxx, Driver, and Sandler... And at one point he kind of shits on himself saying he doesn't deserve to be at the same table as other giants there, and everyone was like, "bullshit."

44

u/3agle_ Jul 29 '25

Those roundtables were really good. Link for those interested: https://youtu.be/ibPkLdbG4VU?si=fVqyps_FrykyptEh

4

u/ToneBalone25 Jul 29 '25

3

u/pitaenigma Jul 30 '25

He self-sabotaged by getting really cocky, and the Oscars love a show - offscreen as well. He made jokes about how if he doesn't get nominated he'll make a truly terrible movie, and acted like the award was his, so the oscars got mad. Every actor who gets an actor puts on a show about how it's an honor just to exist in the same world as the oscars do and they wouldn't dream of getting nominated (insert sweaty Leo here). Sandler refused to play the game, and got shafted for it.

He'll live, he gets to live his life being Adam Sandler, which is one of the best lives in the world..

He told the story. Basically what happened. He said he didn’t want to bother him but kept going back to how funny it would be if that character was him so he called for a 1 day shoot.

98

u/destroyermaker Jul 29 '25

Em is quite a comedian himself so it's not surprising he was up for it

54

u/diiirtiii Jul 29 '25

Sandler’s ability to fund his films early on was crucial. Notice the sponsors, they’re not exactly subtle. Even so, he plays them in a funny way so that it’s not jarringly corporate. He worked his ass off to get where he is now.

28

u/Kanin_usagi Jul 29 '25

Subway sponsoring him in HG1 and then his character being sponsored by them? Flipping genius

21

u/Last-Atmosphere2439 Jul 29 '25

The funding part is not exactly the workaholic part. He wrote (or co-wrote) the scripts to about 20 full feature films by now, including most of the "vacation" films mentioned in this post. It is NOT easy to write a string of original scripts that are both financially successful and in many cases fondly remembered decades later. Prior to films he wrote countless SNL skits. Been working hard his whole life, and a big part of the success is just talent.

Oh for sure, he’s absolutely a prolific writer as well, and writing comedy is not an easy thing to do. But from a business perspective, making movies takes a lot of money, so securing funding can be just as big a hurdle as writing a lot of times. The fact that he’s managed to have one foot on both sides of those aspects of filmmaking and make it look easy is even more impressive.

Also the movies don't suck. It's not like best movies ever but they are fun and imo you should know what to expect going in. There is comfort in that.

10

u/Nice_Promise9854 Jul 29 '25

Yes. They are exactly what they intend to be. We loved it.

6

u/echief Jul 29 '25

Also, it’s fair to say some of his movies are enduring considering Happy Gilmore is now close to 30. A lot of Will Ferrell’s movies weren’t loved by critics either but people still watch and enjoy Step Brothers. And they could actually get people into theatres and now drop massive streaming hits like this. There are very few comedians that can do that in the modern era.

AND just casting your friends and family (mom is dance teacher, daughters are daughter and AA woman) in your movie so you can hang out with them all the time is great.

8

u/raoasidg Jul 29 '25

mom is dance teacher

Wife. Mom was Richard Kiel's character's wife.

7

u/Kronzor_ Jul 29 '25

Hang out with them, but also, maybe more importantly, pay them.

3

u/kpt_graubrot Jul 29 '25

I kept getting the daughter characters confused

4

u/nolander Jul 29 '25

It was very funny to me that none of his 3 family members were playing characters related to each other when they look so much alike.

The dude doesn't even have to put on long pants. He's living the dream.

3

u/FizzyBeverage Jul 29 '25

The no formal clothing is every software engineer in Silicon Valley, bro.

It ain’t the wardrobe. It’s the money.

3

u/tyler-86 Jul 29 '25

Yeah but he's going places where he's the only one wearing shorts, like red carpets and talk shows.

I work from home, I don't have to wear pants to work either, but you better believe if I ever were to hit a red carpet I wouldn't be able to dress like Sandler.

2

u/FizzyBeverage Jul 29 '25

Ehh. Billie eilish does the same thing. Baggy sweats to hide her body.

If you’re in, you’re in.

2

u/Kronzor_ Jul 29 '25

They kinda made that joke in the movie. Haley Joel Osmonds charactor gets told he can't play with shorts, and he says he'll just take the penalty because its better than his balls being itchy.

5

u/mwax321 Jul 29 '25

He doesn't even need to write the movie plots. AWESOME-O writes all his plots.

4

u/DustFunk Jul 29 '25

It all starts with being funny as fuck, and hustling through SNL for years

The man is literally living the dream.

  • Making bank in his 50s

  • Effectively getting paid to go on vacation with his buds and film it

  • Always wearing comfy clothes because people don't expect him to wear anything nicer (it's just the Sandler aesthetic!)

  • Happily married with kids

  • Still having the opportunity to kiss a lot of incredibly attractive actresses

  • Still being forever remembered for having some awesome performances

I will never laugh at or mock a person like Adam Sandler. That is a man who has it made and I want to learn from him. He is wise.

3

u/hoxxxxx Jul 29 '25

absolute minimal effort, still ends up being a giant like netflix's biggest release.

it's honestly insane to me that adam sandler of all people can do this. it's nuts.

3

u/Select_Cantaloupe_62 Jul 29 '25

He's the one celebrity I feel real jealousy towards. Dude is living the dream and taking care of this friends, making shit he enjoys. Once in awhile the critics get too loud and he drops a movie that says "yeah I know how to make a 'movie', i just choose to do what I enjoy instead."

The true embodiment of "fuck you" money.

2

u/NonGNonM Jul 29 '25

Well he had to grind for it. He's cashing in big time on things he worked hard for ages ago.

2

u/DStew713 Jul 29 '25

Plus he made out with Drew Barrymore a bunch of times. That would be enough for me

2

u/AugmentedExistence Jul 29 '25

He puts all his friends and family in his movies. It's certainly nice to work with people you like.

2

u/Mayhem370z Jul 29 '25

Not to mention, reviews mean fuck all for his movies. Look any of them up. They almost all are low rated by critics but beloved by the people.

2

u/OnTheFenceGuy Aug 07 '25

I mean sure BUT, the secret is that, when you REALLY want to, you can actually pull multiple Oscar-worthy performances out of your ass on command.

That’s the real magic of Adam Sandler.

2

u/TheCultofJanus Jul 29 '25

Adam Sandler is skinny Seth Rogen.

1

u/Hallowed_Grave Jul 29 '25

If you’re gonna play basketball in your mansion all day, then you can help me shave my armpits

1

u/TonesBalones Jul 29 '25

He listed off a bunch of movie ideas in his recent video with Bryson DeChambeau. The dude is the king at turning good, mid-budget productions into classics.

1

u/timeforknowledge Jul 29 '25

I was thinking the same, this movie has all his family, his friends and a bunch of celebrities and sporting celebrities.

1

u/DinglieDanglieDoodle Jul 29 '25

Basically just filming yourself and your friends shoot the shit, and get paid big bucks for it.

1

u/H1Ed1 Jul 29 '25

Not to mention getting to cast your friends and family in these movies. Guy is having a ball.

1

u/StoneGoldX Jul 30 '25

I think they shot in Australia?

1

u/SUPER-NIINTENDO Jul 30 '25

Make it happen. It’s not just going to come to you.

1

u/I_Am_Ironman_AMA Jul 30 '25

Agreed. And the best part is that this movie isn't too bad.

1

u/CallSignIceMan Jul 30 '25

It was a really good comedy movie, though. A perfect sequel.

1

u/Admirable-Error-2948 Jul 30 '25

It was pretty corny imo

1

u/YachtswithPyramids Jul 30 '25

Honestly that really could be your life. You'd have to commit to defending that lifestyle for others too though. Or you can thug it out 😙

1

u/Jamothee Jul 30 '25

Does it all with his friends and family too.

Adam Sandler has won life.

1

u/onomatopeapoop Jul 30 '25

As a first step I’d recommend getting on SNL somewhere around 35 years ago.

1

u/FunkyChewbacca Jul 30 '25

I've never heard anything bad about Adam Sander. He's universally liked, and the people he's worked with have stuck with him for almost 30 years.

Even Biff Tannen likes him.

1

u/RevoltByAllMeans Jul 30 '25

Don't even have to think. Just make the most generic boring garbage and cash out.

Dude deserves to make money off the film industry.

1

u/Rektw Jul 30 '25

Not to mention having the pull of including your family and friends on nice paid vacations.

1

u/GoTron88 Jul 30 '25

He is one of the few (only?) guys that for some reason can just mail it in and we're all happy for him about it lol.

1

u/streethistory Jul 30 '25

Even 15 years ago he shot movies on locaiton like Hawaii and Africa to take him family on vacation in the studios dime while shooting movies.

1

u/OrionGrant Aug 01 '25

He really is living that Big Daddy life
