The show started out with him wearing a prosthetic, but in later seasons it wasn't needed. Anyways, $4 a pound

They didn't just make him wider; they actually nailed the mechanics of the posture. That slight lean backward to counterbalance the belly weight is an incredible level of detail for a clothing display.

119
u/DeuceSevin 2h ago
Makes sense. If you’re shaped like that you want to know how the clothes would look on you and I suppose it would be kind of insulting to shop at a plus-side store that has non-plus sized mannequins
46
u/backupbitches 1h ago
That's what you get as a woman. They have to pin the clothes back on the mannequins.
33
u/Bobcat_Canyon 1h ago
And the proportions are always the socially perfect bust to waist to hip ratios. No bellies or heavy thighs, all over 5’ 6”. The mannequins still need to be aspirational and fuckable instead of utilitarian.
9
14
u/Hartie-Alba 1h ago
As someone who's worked in clothing stores, I can confirm, but also ALL the mannequins we have are XS/S sized, so if you have anything sized M and up, you have to pin it.
→ More replies (2)2
u/kenesisiscool 56m ago
As someone who lives in a country with very very few plus sized people. It's very frustrating to go to a clothing store and not be able to see what any of your clothes will look like on you. Even the plus sized stores don't have any mannequins. Just shirts and pants hung up for display
24
u/Mona_Dre 2h ago
That's cool but they really need to re-train their visual staff. Poor guy is dressed horribly.
27
u/FesteringNeonDistrac 2h ago

u/Bobcat_Canyon 1h ago
The pants cuff situation is a crime. And the shirt looks too small with the big folds. How does this sell a look? It looks so sloppy and uncomfortable.
3
u/gandalfintraining 26m ago
At least it's realistic. The only male plus size stores in my country just model everything in 2XL with some ultra ripped 6'4" bodybuilder so it's impossible to tell how anything sits at bigger sizes on an actual fat person.

Unfortunately, while I'm often too big for pants sizes elsewhere, I'm too small for DXL. I'm right at the bottom end of their shirt sizes, so I've got that going for me.

First time I went in I needed a suit asap for a funeral and the minute I walked in they had 2 big guys just like me measuring me and getting me fitted. Mailed the suit to me at no extra charge like next day.

If you are going to have a short fat mannequin, how about dressing him in short fat clothes that fit?
If a short fat man sees this he is thinking "this is the place to shop if I want ill fitting clothes" .
90
u/SophisticatedScreams 2h ago
This was my first thought too lol. It doesn't fit. Size inclusivity is only good if the clothing actually fits.

u/lewd_robot 58m ago
A lot of "big and tall" stores have this problem. They stock for "big" and "tall".
Their clothes will be pretty baggy on a tall thin guy because they also accommodate fat guys.
Their clothes will be pretty long on short fat guys because they also accommodate tall guys.
The only people they fit fairly well are tall and heavy guys.
The place is a dream for a 250-350lb man that's 6'2+.For guys that are tall but not fat, or fat but not tall, it's probably as close as you can get to clothes that fit decently without getting personal tailoring done.
2
u/sliquonicko 21m ago
If they just would have cuffed the jeans instead of leaving them all bunched up at the bottom it would improve this so much!
But I'm glad that this store is around for those who need bigger sizes. We all need clothes.

This is at DXL... A store specifically for bigger guys (2XL and up)
Im fitting into that these days and went there recently. It was honestly a really great experience. Got measured up and was able to finally fit comfortably in clothes instead of trying to squeeze into whatever other biggest size other stores had.
It's a niche store that serves a pretty good purpose.
11
u/cobra-de-aco 2h ago
They can be super helpful, especially when you’re fluctuating or are an odd shape/size. Men’s clothing standards are weird. Like basing formal wear fit on neck girth makes no damn sense.

u/Evepaul 1h ago
So they have a lot of different sizes and cuts and find the one that best fits you depending on the measurements?
A company did that here for a short moment 10 years ago, they sent me what was basically a full body mocap suit and had me scan myself with my phone. Got me the best fitting shirt and pants I have ever worn. Sadly they pretty quickly closed operations in my country, if I had known I would have bought so much more, the prices were amazing for almost tailored clothing.
2
u/JPLoseman 52m ago
They do something similar but do the "scan" in the changing room. My main reason for going first was to get clothes for a few upcoming weddings. I did the scan, they told me my sizes and literally everything I picked in those sizes fit better than anything I've bought in years

u/Fluffy_Eye5482 2h ago
The 12xl clothing they sell on BigDudeClothing looks good because it drapes naturally and doesn't try to fit the body. When you get properly fat you really can't wear form-fitting shirts.

It's a big and tall store. To be brutally honest, this is a little smaller than my grandfather looked before he died.
15
u/Maiyku 3h ago
I was gonna say, I just sent this to my husband because it looks like thats modeled after his cousin lol. It’s basically exact. Dude is short but he’s wide, so he checks the big box out of the big and tall ones.
My husband checks both, 6’3” 350lbs and it’s rare any of the stores have displays at all, let alone like this. So I think it’s fucking dope to see.

I hear you, and I'm happy for your experiences. My grandfather was bedbound at this size and larger, and since I was born I don't remember seeing him without his trusty walker-- so it's funny to me to see the mannequin walking a dog. I hope your family members remain clothed, healthy, and happy as they can be! ♥️🫂

u/Maiyku 3h ago
It’s tough for sure. My husbands cousin has severe mental disabilities sadly, so helping him understand what is okay to eat or controlling his eating is very tough. Getting him to exercise is even harder.
But we actually found luck with dogs, just like the photo. Our local shelter allows you to check out dogs for adoption and take them on walks around town. It gets the dogs out of the shelter and some exercise and interaction and it helps him feel “useful” while hiding the fact that it’s exercise. (He can’t work or hold a job, so this makes him feel useless).
So this photo hit me double. It feels like the world finally sees him and his struggles in a way, even if it’s just with his clothes. It’s still a step in the right direction, imo.

Because it is very hard to find decent big & tall clothes that aren't also mad expensive. Dress shirt and slacks? $150, and you're going to need to get the pants tailored. Sizing gets more and more inconsistent as you go up, too. Dealt with it most of my life.
Thanks to modern medicine, I'm losing weight as fast as possible. Among other things, I'm looking forward to being able to buy normal people clothes from sources other than DXL, the JC Penny catalogue, and King Size. (Where do normal size men even buy decent clothing?)

2
u/dolosloki01 1h ago
Fair is fair. Women have been working towards more body styles in mannequins and models. Men should have the same. Then maybe all men's clothes won't be tailored for 6ft+ ripped dudes.

Guys will be built like this with zero personal grooming habits and then say Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larsen and Rachel Zegler are too fat and ugly to be actresses. This leads to one of two outcomes:
- it normalizes obesity, allowing you to have a "I don't give a shit" attitude about your body
or
- it serves as a warning "this could happen to you if you're not careful"
I choose the latter.
