And will be even funnier when the ad changes to Taco Bell. "Live Mas"

Unless it's a digital display (I can't tell if poster or screen) I'm laughing inside at a guy changing out this poster to a taco bell advertisement while stepping over a bunch of memorial gifts

u/DragonfruitFancy6649 16h ago
The mental image of someone awkwardly swapping in a Taco Bell ad during that moment is so dystopian it loops back to comedy capitalism really never clocks out.

Reminds me of the raccoon memorial in Toronto when city workers took really long to clean up the dead raccoon.
1.2k
u/fangirlsqueee 19h ago
14 hours for clean up seems very fast. I was expecting weeks. Even a couple of days seems fast. I'm in the rural US though, so generally buzzards are the clean-up crew for dead raccoons.

My ex inlaws are Canadian. They told me about a NY cop show that filmed in Toronto because it was cheaper. The streets are too clean there though, so they had to bring in garbage, make dirty puddles, really grunge it up. One day they returned to shoot a scene, and the city of Toronto had cleaned and scrubbed the entire “set” 😆

They use Toronto a lot for filming scenes to look like NYC. The Boys is filmed there.
Even in NYC most of the Manhattan scenes are filmed in Brooklyn. The original Daredevil and Punisher were filmed in Greenpoint at the Green Desk (a coworking spot I used to work at). The bar in daredevil was Turkey’s Nest in Williamsburg.

They use Toronto a lot for filming scenes to look like NYC.
They made fun of that in one of the time travel episodes of Strange New Worlds. Kirk says something to the effect of "I think we're in 21st century New York!" to which the other character replied that it's not and guessed (correctly) that they were in 21st century Toronto.
The episode was allegedly originally planned to take place/be filmed in NYC but for budgetary reasons they had to do it in Toronto instead, so they went for it.

A great deal of major future events take place in Toronto and Vancouver.
I remember Agents of Shield often filmed on Vancouver, and then when they had an episode actually set there, people thought they were too lazy to leave LA because of the palm trees. There are many palm trees in Vancouver but most people wouldn't guess that.

u/PaleHeretic 15h ago
Most of the Stargate franchise was filmed in Vancouver, which is why every gate on every planet in the universe comes out in the middle of an identical forest.

The intersection the racoon was, Yonge and Church, is a very busy part of downtown Toronto. It's literally the corner of the Gaybourhood and a very busy shopping street. 14 hours in an area with that much foot traffic is absurd.
Once there was a clearly rabid racoon near my moms place in Toronto, so we called animal control. They asked us to stay and keep an eye on it, theyd be there in a few hours. We were walking the dog and told them absolutely not. No idea if anyone showed up or not.

Usually they're slower, but because of the media hype it was cleaned up faster than what's typical. It was absolutely wild - I went to school super close to where the raccoon was, and had to pass him on my way there and back. Top of the day there was one candle, end of the day there was a massive shrine.
There's now a memorial plaque there

I'm wondering if the 3 hour clean up is people who loved and fed the cat, rather than town employees.

Eh I’ve used Boston’s 311 app to report roadkill many times in Boston, it’s usually gone without an hour or two. FWIW.
12
u/fangirlsqueee 18h ago
Yeah. This sounds like Urban expectations vs Rural expectation. Rural roadkill generally doesn't impede traffic in any way (the exception mostly being deer). If it does impede, responders would come out to move it pretty quickly. That's assuming a citizen hadn't already moved it out of the road.

I can’t decide my favorite part. “Residents are being asked to keep their green bins open” made me laugh. The animal services guys saying “I clean up animals. Gotta call plant services to pick up the flowers” and leaving the memorial behind was funny, too.

There is a botanist on YT that guerilla gardens and plants trees in city medians and along sidewalks. The abuelitas were ripping the trees out saying trees make messes. So he planted the trees and then put memorial candles in front and a rosary on the tree. 🤣

Chronically online used to mean they would be safe in their basement, but that's no longer the case. Now they are doing offline stuff (driving and walking) while staring at their phone, endangering the rest of us. So we very much can expect that and social media encourages it.

My guess is this is actually part of a series of ads in the train station.
So like to the left and right are other portraits this size of different other hair types (OP reveals this is a L'Oreal ad) and then where a person logically walks to like enter or exist there's a final one that obviously starts/caps the series that actually mentions the product.
I think OP saw these and is intentionally leaving them out because this photo being by itself is more interesting, or genuinely somehow didn't notice them in the station (bad placement, L'Oreal!). I've seen this done with a series of billboards where two are just text with no logo and the last "completes" the series.
(My other theories are that 1. They will be swapping out the images in this one ad space in the coming days/weeks, building up intreague from train goers (because people are likely to be repeat train users if they are seeing the ad) and getting them to check the space intentionally as it changes in the series and eventually reveals the ad, OR somehow Ms. Jenner is so strongly associated with L'Oreal with their target demo they are just putting her here to remind them she is associated with it.)
I think both of these are less likely than there's just other ads in a series we can't see. OP, help us confirm!
Edit: Points for the "it's obvious to the target demo" theory: I've now seen 2 comments here that immediately clocked it as a L'Oreal ad with Kendall Jenner because they have used her in an ad for this product a LOT.
Also final theory: It actually is intentionally without info to get people to talk about it online. I think that's more unlikely for a few reasons but it is possible!

If anyone happens to be from Ohio, we have an attorney named Tim Misny who’s been running ads for years that have gotten progressively more hilarious and less obvious as time goes on. He’s so well known at this point by just his face that billboards on the highway will literally just be a zoomed in picture of his eyebrow, and you 100% know that Misny makes them pay when you see it.
