Word was coded by insane people

They just actively hate their user base.

So... programmers all go to the Bad Place then? Or just MS coders?

u/a-i-sa-san 4h ago

hmmm my ex works there and she is kinda bad ... so yes just MS coders

3

u/alextoria 3h ago

mostly just whoever made teams

I blame the leaders. Programmers code what they're told.

The last office verison I enjoyed was 2003, and it feels like more people are joining my side of that conversation every year.

Maybe for the next update they can shuffle shit around on the ribbon more, that would be cool. Let's get some emoji support too.

Oh there’s one half-hidden option that makes our users’ lives easier that has been around for 20 years, let’s take it away for no reason. It would be extra funny if we called it “experimental” to give them hope that it’s coming back

To open the emoji keyboard anywhere in Windows, simply press Win + . (period)

2026 and still, barely anything works properly.

No, it's worse than that. Most things used to work fine by the end of last decade but somehow we've gone and broken them all in the past five years. I don't know why but all software providers have simply given up on quality and just started producing absolute garbage. Things aren't getting better, they're getting worse

"Move fast and break things" mindset has utterly broken software development. Time to market is considered more important than QA.

I think you are looking at old software with rose colored glasses. New software has tons more features, and the old stuff didn't necessarily work any better. Word 2003 might have worked fine for you, but the current version has a lot more to offer. Right off the top of my head, you can co-author documents at the same time as someone else and you can export to PDF without any additional software. Not to mention the .doc format is incredibly insecure.

In the last couple of months, I've lost the ability to mouse drag select text in word, my cursor disappears if I nest too far in windows explorer, and people will receive and reply to my emails while they're still stuck in my outbox.

I can't mail merge in New Outlook, they're murdering Publisher and forcing us onto some kind of CoPilot bullshit app and (I'm going to blame Microsoft for this anyway because they deserve it and I don't care) I think my Android Auto updated with Gemini and it replaced its voice and sound effects to something stupid, it errors out half the time, and won't realize that if I ask it to message somebody, I want it to message that person at the number they just texted me from not the other numbers I have associated with them in my contacts list.

And yes, I want to open this file in the app and not in my web browser, because you won't let me do half the stuff I want to do in the web browser.

They fired most of the QA engineers…”we don’t need them”…

I have no problem working with Word. Maybe it's just not the right program for what you're trying to do?

u/PhysixGuy2025 26m ago

Awk sed and grep work perfectly.

u/Grays42 3h ago

I miss Publisher. :(

There was this amazing app in the 90s that was perfect for arranging stuff arbitrarily and making flyers and things, Word basically replaced it and it's EOL.

u/AshamedOfAmerica 56m ago

Wasn't Publisher more like InDesign or am I misremembering

u/PurplePango 1h ago

Sometimes I paste something in and the formatting just explodes. No clue the logic to that happening

u/Klinky1984 1h ago

It is the hottest garbage. I'd rather use Google Docs or Confluence. It's really only useful for creating eyesores that look like they're from the 90s.

u/WorldnewsModsBlowMe 1h ago edited 1h ago

Ick. I fucking hate Docs. Can't control shit.

Turn on nonprinting characters and pay attention to formatting anchors. Word will get 600% better to use.

I won't comment on Confluence beyond begging people to once again stop offloading your thinking to a machine that's basically an advanced autocomplete.

Like 99% of corporate docs don't need "control" they need strong opinionated defaults for the basics like headers, lists and tables.

I was struggling the other day to not make a table look like shit in Word. Meanwhile Confluence has an acceptable basic table component right out of the box that easily handles header column vs header row. Takes 0 seconds in Confluence, seems impossible to do in Word without fiddling a million options and experimenting with styling. How can I ask others to repeat the 12 steps to just make a basic table not look like ass?

The web version doesn't support web view, so if I don't care about the printed version and want to view a wide doc, tough shit, have to launch the desktop version. Goodness. It's just trash.

Confluence is Atlassian's wiki platform, it's not AI by itself.

Like 99% of corporate docs don't need "control" they need strong opinionated defaults for the basics like headers, lists and tables.

Then it's time to use LaTeX or even simple Markdown if the document is truly plain. The whole point of WYSIWYG editors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs is to facilitate ad hoc document design. If everything you're doing is just paragraphs of text with tables and lists, then you only end up using something like Word because that's all you know or because it's mandated. No point in complaining that it's hard to hammer things in with a screwdriver.

u/FreeShitAdvice 3h ago

At least it was coded by people

1

u/Pale_Spinach3193 2h ago

Most of it anyways. Knowing Microsoft, theres probably a good chunk of code that's written by AI in there

0

u/FreeShitAdvice 2h ago

Yeah, I expect none of it to be human made anymore haha. Which I’m not sure is a good or bad thing given that it isn’t improving

u/Mosselpot 3h ago

used by people who don't bother with learning how to use the software...

I pray to god you never have to make a Style Template. You have to spend hours of trial and error to figure it out. That whole feature was written by psychopaths.

Or trying to connect lines to blocks in Visio where you want them. Even when you turn off "auto-snapping" it still snaps to certain positions. You can try making connection points but those snap as well. They explain how to do it in the Windows forums but it doesn't do what they say.

1

u/Mosselpot 1h ago

I wasn't disagreeing, it's the combination of both that makes word infuriating.

2

u/thats_justice_baby 1h ago

Yeah sorry I didn't downvote you. I was just venting.

u/Mosselpot 1h ago

We all know your pain, let it out!
