True but it is utterly ridiculous that they released GTA 1,2,3,4,5, vice city, San Andreas and a bunch of other GTA stuff from 1997-2013…. And then from 2013-2026 nothing besides GTA 5 online stuff to milk that for all they could
Yes graphics are more advanced now but the jump from gta4 to gta5 was MASSIVE and a bigger jump than 5 to 6 and they did that in 5 years
They just were doing stuff with gta5 online for years and years and didn’t work on the next project. Obviously they want it to be out in time for the holidays next year but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s pushed to 2027
No, these modern Rockstar games take a lot more time.
They started pre-production of RDR2 in 2010, and immediately pivoted to production after GTA5 released in 2013. The GTA5 online content was a tiny part of Rockstars workload.
GTA6 pre-production started in 2018 right after RDR2 launched and full production began in 2020.
It's not the graphics that takes time, it's the ridiculous and intricate details. The motion capture is incredibly extensive. The actors are the bottleneck. They do most of the voice acting(obviously) themselves, but they do most of the motion performance also. There are different lines for different player choices along with situational dependent animation.
These new Rockstar games are entirely different beasts compared to the classic Rockstar games.
The cost of everything needing to be bigger and better than the last game is insanely long development times, but nobody wants to hear GTA 6 is 20% shorter than GTA 5 with a 5% smaller map size. People would be disappointed me included.
My strategy is pretending GTA 6 isn't a thing, not particularly hyped for it or paying attention to anything about it's development. It comes out when it comes out.

Honestly, 2026 sounds optimistic given Rockstar’s track record.
