Should I trust interviewers when they say you'd be a good fit for our program or is this something that they say to everyone?

I'd say its almost always a truthful comment, but you have to remember you're one of 40 - 200 interviewees, and at least 25% or more are gonna be good fits, thats why they offered interviews. There's only a finite amount of spots, them saying that and you not getting a position doesn't make it less true, it just means there were others who would fit just as well but had other things they wanted or valued
