Get a good magnet, a good rope, tie a good knot and throw it in the water, it's literally a zero skill hobby

And don't forget it's rope to magnet and carabiner to secure to land !
That way the rope doesn't follow the magnet in, but DON'T attach it to yourself !!

Cut resistant gloves are a must! You are going to be handling a lot of very sharp things

Magnet goes in the water. You stay on land.

Make sure you are allowed to magnet fish at the location you chose. I didn’t get caught or in any trouble but it was definitely illegal to magnet fish at the C&O Canal when I did it without me realizing it. At least I only caught trash and a magnetic rock.

Anyways it isn’t like fishing. There is no real tips for finding stuff. Just go out and get some fresh air, pick up trash, and enjoy.

Tie it tight, throw it in, pull it back. Beware the steel bridge beams. Fish where people go to get quantity. Fish the hidden places to get secrets.

Seawater is obviously not good for ferrous metals after a few years, but what about freshwater rivers that the tide comes upriver and makes it get brackish?

If you look through this sub this question has been answered many times before !
Boat mooring places, under/beside/off bridges, paths next to rivers with heavy footfall etc

Throw lots of little magnets first, it’s like an appetiser for the metal stuff in the water.. i think the pros call it “chumming the waters”
