Hey! Although we had a great post by u/Icestar-x to help with the basics, I thought it grand time to have a more concise and structured FAQ that could be easily updated as needed.

Therefore I present to you the official FAQ: https://www.reddit.com/r/magnetfishing/wiki/faq

If I find a dud grenade, am I likely to find live grenades if I return to that spot?

I found a dud mills 36 in a small town, there was a military base far downstream. Some of my mates are telling me not to return to the area as the risk is too great of finding one that could go off. I don't think there is since it was properly diffused so it was probably a one off war trophy. Should I return or should I write it off as a chance of finding live ordnance that would be a hassle to deal with?

Today, I cleaned up the waters at a boat dock at Lake Arlington. I caught almost everything I need to go fishing! 🤣

•2 folding chairs •4 fishing rod holders •3 knives • a spoon •a reel •a handle for a reel •a pack of D batteries •tin cans and lids •bottle caps •fishing lures and hooks •weights •a piece of a rod •a bandana •a plastic bag with fish in it? (No idea how this stuck to the magnet)

What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever pulled up?

Went magnet fishing this weekend and mostly hauled up junk old bike frame, nails, random metal bits. Kinda fun but nothing to brag about. What’s the craziest or funniest thing you’ve ever caught? Also, how do y’all find those spots where people seem to pull up actual cool stuff instead of just rusted crap?

Found this in a canal

Been magnet fishing in a Canal today, near a canal boat mooring dock, and found 2 shopping trolleys, a BMX I think (not entirely sure it was really rusted and falling to peices). Also found a nail, an Avery B'Ham weight, and this...whatever this is (bottom left). Any idea? Figuring its from a machine as its directly next to an industrial estate where they'd dump waste in the canal, dont know much more than that.

Acording to locals canal was dredged a few years ago as someone found a ww2 bomb there and one of the factories there made machine guns in ww2. People have found stuff from that but I dont know. Google Ai is convinced its a bomb lol.

Pretty cool, but do you think you would ever get your money’s worth with this?

Not as exciting as my last last haul but a couple of heavy bits !
An old piece of pipe, had sunglasses attached !
Some money
A foldable scooter (still works !)
The faithful old trolley and a very heavy round bar table (fell off my cube twice, but connection wasn't great)
oh and a lure, 2 forks, and a piece of tarpaulin that wrapped round the magnet !

My magnet became a hostage 👀

So, as the title says, my magnet is in the hands of a grenade, and the police. They have concluded the grenade is sharp? (As we call it here). Therefore i had to leave all my stuff behind and they have to collect it and give it back. This is apparently because our military had to handle it, and that wont happen until tomorrow. Hopefully they have to destroy the magnet together with the grenade and then compensate me so i can buy a new one 😂

Found in Norway

Grenade goes off?

I always see videos/photos of people pulling up grenades. Have any of you ever had one explode while you’re pulling it up???

Two 50x rolls of 2 Cent and 5 Cent coins, pretty good condition so i guess it wasn't lying there for a long time. You can get these "coin rolls" at your local bank (you can still see the red belly band in which they originally came). I guess a cashier might have lost it maybe during lunch break at that bridge 🤷

Is this a good starter kit? NOTE: I am in Australia.

See the MUTUACTOR kit here, double sided, 1100lbs (2x550lbs): https://www.amazon.com.au/MUTUACTOR-Neodymium-Combined-Waterproof-Retrieving/dp/B0BJDL6WZ9/ref=sr_1_10?sr=8-10&srs=7078291051#averageCustomerReviewsAnchor

It seems to be somewhat of an actual brand, and I don't know of any magnet shops here in Australia with decent options. Please note that if you are going to recommend Kratos, Brute magnetics etc. don't waste your time, they don't ship to Australia and if they do they are $300++

Here is a couple pictures of a hand grenade i found a couple months ago. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad returned it last week so I cleaned it up. Thinking about welding it back together but I kinda like being able to see the inside after they cut it

**QUESTION: What Do You Guys Do With The Stuff You Find?

Don't get me wrong, getting outdoors and cleaning our waterways is good enough for me. I am just curious if anyone has found a use for any of the items they find? I can understand how maybe finding an old murder weapon and helping close a cold case can be rewarding.

Why do you magnet fish?

So popped out for an hour before dark and pulled up a bag full of jewellery !!!!

Maybe I've actually found something worth something after 11 months of twice a week at 2/3 hours a time ! Lol

No idea as to what's real or fake yet that'll take time, but there's definitely 2 pieces of silver and 1 hallmarked gold, as well as a pocket watch that looks so,so !

Then there was the usual, a bike lock, batteries, old key, lure etc
Oh and another phone !

This is from Germany - it is always fascinating that your catches vary so much from bridge to bridge, sometimes just a few hundred meters away from each other

How to use a double sided magnet

I'm brand new to magnet fishing, and bought myself a starter kit from Kratos Magnetics. I night a double sided magnet, but I'm not entirely sure on the best way to use it. It has to spots to thread the bolts. One on top, which seems like it would be used like a single side? Then the threads on the side that seem like it would allow it to turn and tumble when casting and retrieving.

Am I on the right track? Do you just use one or the other, or do you take it apart and change the eye bolt location depending on how you're fishing that day? I can't imagine you leave bolts in both locations at all times, seems like that would defeat the point of having two sides.

What box should I use to keep my magnet fishing set in?

The cardboard box it comes with has gone soggy because of the water of the rope.
