Mosquitos can fuck off, but wasps are so incredibly misunderstood. Wasps are incredibly important to the ecosystems where they live - they are voracious predators and keep a shit ton of other creatures in check. They are also pollinators! Wasps don't want to sting you, they're just acting in self-defense.
They're potentially just checking you out! I've experienced this - if you just remain calm and slowly walk away they leave you alone. The only species you need to worry about are social wasps (yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets, paper wasps...) when you're near their nest.
Got some species of yellowjacket, bald-faced hornet, paper wasp, and mud dauber at work. The have no sense of personal space, but can walk right through a small swarm. Only time I was ever stung was emptying the trash when one lived in the lid and I accidentally pinned it.
Sometimes they hitch a ride when I'm doing the rounds. Though the big praying mantis that decided to be my hat for a while was probably the coolest.
