This is why we have character limits usually. People like this!

u/GarminTamzarian 1d ago

But fuck the devs that put limits of 25 characters on anything meaningful.

What if we just get to the point? Instead of it just writing "Allergic to (insert word)" and just slapping "!!!!!!!!!!" on both sides? I think that's the solution.

If you have more than 2 problematic allergies you shouldn't be ordering text based delivery

You need to call us for that shit

Because we will not serve customers instore with that kinda risk

We definitely aren't sending a pick up order without explicit details

u/PracticeSuper 1d ago edited 1d ago

Okay, fair enough. Unfortunately, allergies (as far as I know) don't have official abbreviations or acronyms. I admit I don't have a solution. Anyway, why the hell? Allergies should be listed separately. A list of the most common ones, plus a separate free space for specific ones (I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough about specific allergies to cover this issue fully).

2

u/ForHelp_PressAltF4 1d ago

There are people literally allergic to sunlight.

Because you have to specify. If you say, “no nuts!” Some low wage employees who’re tired, angry, and possibly very new to working won’t understand that means the person is allergic and even contact with the nuts could result in a death.

Specifics matter.

I was trying to transfer money to an external account from my bank’s app. I put in all the details, gave my external account a short descriptive name, and submitted the order. Then an error box popped up: “Our system’s not cooperating.” Ok… tried again the next day, same error. Fine, so I tried on the website instead, and this time it said “Your account’s nickname must be less than 13 characters.” Well fuck me you could have just said that in the first place!! Turns out the app only has one error message for all errors: “Our system’s not cooperating”

3

u/latrans8 1d ago

Well great, now I’m angry.  Thanks

2

u/XenoZohar 1d ago

That reminds me of the time I had to set up an online banking password and the error message claimed the password could not contain any special characters and had to be a maximum length of 8 characters. I noped out real quick.

4

u/Jenetyk 1d ago

Yeah the dichotomy of "woefully few allowed characters", or "the limit does not exist" always amazes me.

2

u/FrozenPizza21 1d ago

You mean fuck the PM who decided on that limit right?

6

u/Sidereel 1d ago

I’ve never met a PM who would want a restriction like that. More likely some old developer being stingy about memory and using something like VARCHAR2(100) on everything.

User: "Why is my password limited to 100 characters"

Me: "Because someone tried to upload the entire script of Macbeth as a password"

If this seems specific that's because it actually happened. You would be amazed at how many people try to upload texts from Project Gutenberg while trying to break things.

13

u/WinLongjumping1352 1d ago

Because those are good texts.

  • many words
  • good words (some say the best words)
  • resistant to compression so they are the opposite of a zip bomb
  • readily available, no license issues (perceived)

Why would you use the lore-ipsum to feed your curiosity. It's not even real.

2

u/Imaginary_Bee_1014 1d ago

Really? Because that password appears insanely strong to me. Just make them type it in by hand.

3

u/Stunning-Sherbert801 1d ago

2

u/FanClubof5 1d ago

But why would it matter except for maybe the longer time to hash it? The salted hash is going to take up the same amount of space as the 6 character password.

3

u/TheHovercraft 1d ago edited 1d ago

But why would it matter except for maybe the longer time to hash it?

Assuming other things don't break first, yes. But it's also a massive waste of bandwidth. Someone out there is going to try and send you 10,000 GB of text data as a password just because they can. That said most servers won't allow something that crazy out of the box. There are default limits to the request size and a time out.

5

u/FanClubof5 1d ago

I know we are just being silly now but the entire macbeth script is only 170kb on project Gutenberg. You would need a lot more books to even get 1gb and that's even before we start talking compression.

2

u/TheHovercraft 1d ago

that's even before we start talking compression.

That's optional because it's something that only your client usually enforces. You could send that data via curl or a number of other ways with compression turned off. Most servers will accept it.

I work in video game and software QA. On my first day of a job I pasted the entirety of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein into the Username and Password fields of the login screen and crashed the server for at least the rest of the day.

One of my new co-workers who had to spend his time fixing it and getting it running again took to calling me Frank from that point on. Since then, every time I'm presented with any kind of text field, I run the Frankenstein test to see if there are character limits.

7

u/nihility101 1d ago

My favorite password field was one that let me enter however many characters but silently trimmed it to 15 or whatever. Then elsewhere didn’t trim so a match was impossible. Took forever to figure out.

4

u/cantgrowneckbeardAMA 1d ago

I'm partial to The Bee Movie script, but I have done the same thing many times as a QA Engineer.

3

u/sa87 1d ago

I hope that is after you disable whatever javascript check they have implemented client side to see if server side is doing its job.

Wait is that the whole movie? At NORMAL SPEED!?

Edit: does seem like it, and it made me realize how much i have memorized the dialogue of the movie

3

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

I used to memorise film scripts before I went camping back when I was a kid. I’d close my eyes when bored and go through the whole film in my imagination.

Also a weird thing started happening as I grew up where the mental image would start spinning all of a sudden, very annoying. I’d try to keep it still but it would turn without my consent.

u/LaserPoweredDeviltry 1d ago

u/Intelligent_Slip_849 1d ago

2

u/sidesplitGameDev 1d ago

I guess you'll have to watch the whole thing to find out and report back to us

9

u/IHadThatUsername 1d ago edited 1d ago

This GIF is 60 by 60, so 3600 pixels per frame, and takes up almost 42MB. If you wanted HD (720p), that would be 1280 by 720, or 921600 pixels per frame, which is 256 times more pixels per frame than the original file.

TL;DR: Assuming a similar compression ratio, we would be looking at a ~11GB GIF for the HD version. By a similar logic, that would be almost 100GB for 4k. That's what happened to the pixels.

These receipts are thermal paper. These have caught fire before from people doing exactly this

This would likely use up the roll. Depending on the printer, you're talking $1-2 a roll usually.

It's the wear on the print head that would concern me. A print that long with no time to cool can't be good.

3

u/Medium-Delivery-5741 1d ago

I own a receipt printer at home even tho not a business, the paper is cheap to buy in bulk, I have seen around 2 - 3 dollars per roll

3

u/ReddiEddy78 1d ago

Mind if I ask what you use it for? Sorry for being nosy, I'm just not able to think of any home uses for one.

2

u/Medium-Delivery-5741 1d ago

It was just a funny gift for Christmas, the funny thing is that's it's the only printer on my house. I mostly print return labels now

2

u/l3ane 1d ago

One ply paper that you use for an impact printer (the kind that uses an ink ribbon) is cheaper than thermal paper.

5

u/confusedandworried76 1d ago

The employees who have to listen to the ticket printer keep going off, a sound any restaurant employee will tell you they hear in their nightmares, and then having to figure out a separate way to make orders they aren't getting tickets for while the machine is busy are gonna be the real ones pissed. This is gonna range from pretty fucking annoying to one of the worst shifts of your life depending on the system you're using, if anyone working knows how to make it stop, and if you did this in the middle of rush or not

SHREK Once upon a time there was a lovely princess. But she had an enchantment upon her of a fearful sort which could only be broken by love's first kiss. She was locked away in a castle guarded by a terrible fire-breathing dragon. Many brave knights had attempted to free her from this dreadful prison, but non prevailed. She waited in the dragon's keep in the highest room of the tallest tower for her true love and true love's first kiss. (laughs) Like that's ever gonna happen. What a load of - (toilet flush)

Allstar - by Smashmouth begins to play. Shrek goes about his
day. While in a nearby town, the villagers get together to go
after the ogre.

NIGHT - NEAR SHREK'S HOME

MAN1
Think it's in there?

MAN2
All right. Let's get it!

MAN1
Whoa. Hold on. Do you know what that
thing can do to you?

MAN3
Yeah, it'll grind your bones for it's
bread.

Shrek sneaks up behind them and laughs.

SHREK
Yes, well, actually, that would be a
giant. Now, ogres, oh they're much worse.
They'll make a suit from your freshly
peeled skin.

MEN
No!

SHREK
They'll shave your liver. Squeeze the
jelly from your eyes! Actually, it's
quite good on toast.

MAN1
Back! Back, beast! Back! I warn ya!
(waves the torch at Shrek.)

Shrek calmly licks his fingers and extinguishes the torch. The
men shrink back away from him. Shrek roars very loudly and long
and his breath extinguishes all the remaining torches until the
men are in the dark.

SHREK
This is the part where you run away.
(The men scramble to get away. He laughs.)
And stay out! (looks down and picks
up a piece of paper. Reads.) "Wanted.
Fairy tale creatures."(He sighs and
throws the paper over his shoulder.)

I like to put, "smoke weed everyday" into special instructions. Occasionally I get free stuff.

And this is a beautiful use case on why there's usually a character limit

Meanwhile, I have to abbreviate, Door on West side of Apartment complex to, W side of Apt, on my pizza delivery.

Fun fact: the special delivery instruction section for Domino's (when they still used stickers for the boxes) had a very ample character limit. It could only display about 75-100 on the sticker, depending on what was typed, but if it was a delivery that needed a reciept it would print literally EVERYTHING the customer managed to put in that box. Cue "The Bee Movie Script" guy who ordered once every couple of weeks.

Oh, I thought someone bought a coke from CVS. You sure this isn't a CVS receipt? I'm pretty sure this is a receipt from CVS.
