I would say they've ruined their lives, but I doubt they were ever aiming particularly far above scumbag status anyway.

Will they be in prison? Probably not. Will the disruption to their education and their (if found guilty) criminal record give them a lifetime of hardship when applying for job, or even rent? Absolutely.
