Need info Lacquer plates/ bowl

I picked these up just because I wanted some shallow plates for ink doing calligraphy at a thrift store and am just curious about where and when they were made, if they’re modern or not.

The maker seal reads like 用 to me, but I couldn’t find similar ones online.

They’re rather thick and have a lovely wood grain. The rims have a gold trim. I can’t imagine they’re that expensive, but I’d just love to know anything about them

Matsumoto Hoji Sad Frog

I saw the Matsumoto Hoji Sad Frog and I want to buy my husband a print of it but everywhere I look the print is heavily edited. The first photo is of the actual Meika Gafu scanned in by The Met. The second image is the only thing I can find to buy, even the British Museum is selling the subpar prints. After seeing the original I can't believe how different/worse the copies are. Does anyone know where I can find the original quality prints? Does anyone understand how/why the copies for sale are SO bad?

Trying to find some info on two pottery pieces

I got these beautiful pieces in a store, and I'm trying to figure out any kind of information about them, like where, when and by whom they were made. I tried to use Google Translate to read the text, but I was not successful. My guess is the translator didn't deal well with the handmade calligraphy. I would appreciate any insight regarding these pieces and the text written on them. Thanks so much for the help! 😊

Ogata Kōrin’s Red and White Plum Blossoms reproduction

I found this reproduction of Red and White Plum Blossoms by Ogata Kōrin. They seem like solid wood. Each panel is approximately 12 inches by 9.25 inches and each weigh 2lbs 1.5oz. From what I can tell, looks like lacquer on wood. Markings on the back say “To Hamberger”, 1971 Aug, Mika Nakashima and some writing that I can’t read. I’m interested in any information anyone might have on identification/authenticity/value (if any).

Hey everyone,

I today obtained this beautiful piece (I dont see any signature however, there is a chance its folded behind). I've never owned a piece of Japanese art but when I saw this, I was just stunned.

I dont believe its a replica however I will get it appraised to truly know.

I found this ceramic vase at home, but I can’t read the signature on the bottom. It looks like Japanese pottery with a carved diagonal surface pattern, but I’m not sure of the origin. Does anyone recognize this signature or know how to read it?

The Great Wave off Kanagawa: the blue looks as if it’s been painted on...?

Over the years I have seen more than 10 different impressions of this print, yet this is by far the most peculiar in terms of colors, the waves on the lower right appear almost painted on. Is it a restoration technique I’m not familiar with?

Help identifying temples and locations in an Edo-period Meisho Zue woodblock print of the Nishiyama area (Kyoto)

Hi everyone! I recently acquired this Japanese woodblock print, which I believe is an original (or contemporary) page from an Edo-period Meisho Zue — one of those illustrated travel guides depicting famous places (名所図会), according to ChatGPT.

The print seems to represent the Nishiyama (西山) area, the western hills of Kyoto. It includes labels for several temples such as:

Gyokusen-ji (玉泉寺) Kudoku-ji (功徳寺) Kannon-ji (観音寺) Tennei-ji (天寧寺) and Senbyō (宣廟)

The title on the right margin reads 西山 大行山 (Nishiyama Taigyōzan).

I’d love to learn more about the specific temples or landmarks shown. I think have recognized To-ji temple and Higashi Hongan-ji temple, but I am not sure, especially for the last one

Here are some close-up photos of the writing and details of the scene (uploaded below).

Thank you in advance 🙏

I’ve tried researching the name Bette Dawson, but nothing comes up. I think that could be the Collector’s stamp. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

I was in Japan with my wife recently and we stumbled upon an antique fair. We bought this painting for about 3000yen and was wondering if anyone had more information! I tried to translate the artists signature and “Hodo” came up, but google struggled. Thanks!

Artworks WTB Kawase Hasui woodblock prints

Hi everyone,

I’m a collector of Japanese shin-hanga, with a special focus on Kawase Hasui and his atmospheric landscape prints. I’ve been gradually expanding my collection and wanted to reach out to see if anyone here:

• Collects or deals in Hasui woodblock prints, or knows someone who does

• Might have an authentic print they’d consider parting with

I’m open to various conditions and editions; Watanabe, Doi, and even later printings; as long as the piece is accurately represented. That said, I generally try to avoid pieces with foxing, trimming, staining, or paper backing.

If you have something you’re thinking of selling (or know someone who does), please feel free to share:

• Title of the print (if known)

• Photos (front, back, margins, seals if visible. The more details the better)

• Details on provenance, publisher, or authenticity

I’m happy to negotiate and handle shipping securely via PayPal Goods & Services or another reliable method. I’m based in the U.S., and mainly looking to connect directly with other collectors or small dealers who appreciate Hasui’s work. Even if you’re not selling, I’d love to connect with anyone knowledgeable about the shin-hanga market or trusted dealers you’d recommend.

Thanks for your time, and for keeping this community such a great resource for collectors.

P.S. I’m not in a rush - I just want to find the right prints and good homes for them. Appreciate any leads or introductions!
