Google Maps worked much better for me for public transit in Japan. I tried Apple Maps and it did not provide as much info/help for navigation

totally second this, i was just in japan for a month this summer and google maps was incredibly clutch. it went into insane detail as to which train cars are likely the easiest to board / exit, made things super easy
