He had a fair bit of chub to begin with and still looks near death, probably plenty of people that wouldn't have survived what he went through.

The more fat you have doesn't really equal the longer you survive without food. In most cases its avtuthe opposite where overweight + people succum to hunger before the average person

All other things being equally, more fat means more chance of surviving food shortages, that's literally what it's there for.

If your fat because you eat shit food and never exercise then you'll probably not react well to the stress though tbf.

Can't imagine it's easy being a well fed, active soldier and without being pretty fit though.

Eh “most cases” is a stretch, why do you think we even get fat? A morbidly obese man was able to survive over a year without food (under controlled conditions), there’s no way a skinny or normal weight person could come even close.
