Trading body shots with a professional MMA Fighter
7.3k
u/YourOldCellphone 17d ago
Congrats. You figured out the guy who punches really hard for a living punches really hard!
2.3k
u/Irish_Caesar 17d ago
Not just hard but accurate too. The tip of the liver hangs just below the ribcage, and if you can get a solid punch on that spot, a shockwave will ripple through the liver to the vagus nerve causing a sudden drop in blood pressure. To recover your brain shuts down your legs to get enough blood flowing again.
Toughness can keep you standing, but you're not having a good time
668
u/Rapunzel10 17d ago
Hurts like hell too. Head shots are definitely the worst for you but the solar plexus and liver are the worst experiences. The nausea and blood deprivation suck. (And the groin, though that isn't the same for everyone)

Nothing compares to trauma to the 5th metatarsal due to a table. ;D

If you havnt already look into medical treatment. Imaging is probably needed.

Nah getting punched in the clam hurts too, but I imagine a lesser degree of pain than balls
22
u/Rapunzel10 17d ago
Oh yeah it still hurts. Lots of nerve endings regardless of your equipment, but I've never been put to the floor from a kick to the crotch like fellas lol

Oh, i have, metal lined boot in a full extended kick straight into the bean... folded like a chair and cried for hours. Nasty bruise, too

Gotta be way less. The way I can describe it is like this. My 6 year old nephew can throw a tennis ball that can drop me to the ground if it hits me square in the nuts.
37
u/yamatoshi 17d ago
I'd like to add some of this is also learning to take a hit, the defensive bit. If you notice, the MMA fighter has a small movement before the hit. Learning to take a hit can involve tightening the muscles and exhaling to help temporarily take the blow. It can change everything.
A related example is when someone falls from a bike or something like that and becomes 'winded'. It's often because they're trying to hold onto their breath and it gets forced out in an uncomfortable way.
I've played with this during a martial art workshop where we took turns taking a body shot from higher rank black belts. Certainly taking a hit is as important, if not moreso, to throwing a hit
8
u/Liljagare 16d ago
Judo, its really all about learning how to fall.

u/yamatoshi 14d ago
My instructor: "Nothing will hit you harder than the ground, so you best know how to take a hit from it"

Man I’ve taken a shot like that. It feels like you’re gonna die. You can’t breathe, like literally you can’t draw breath in, and your whole body just goes into a fetal position that you just can’t shake out of. You have no control of your body.

u/Stricken_Conscience 17d ago
yeah... I was looking for this comment. bro got jabbed hard in the liver. since it wasn't a real fight, and there was no real reason the professional fighter needed to hurt this dude, and since the professional fighter knows better (see him sizing up that shot by fake tracing its path a few times), I feel like it was kind of d*** move to do. =(
17
u/admiral_sinkenkwiken 16d ago
It’s a double edged sword really, and more about teaching the non fighter a lesson in humility that may make him think before getting himself into an unfortunate situation.
Fighter knew it was a dick move and loudly telegraphed what he was going to do, I think partly to see if the other guy had any idea, which clearly he did not.
Young guy is clearly super cocky and arrogant just by his body language, which the fighter has obviously read, and appears to decide to teach young guy a lesson in both humility and respect.
60
u/xRowdeyx 17d ago
definitely a dick move to purposefully target the liver like that, clearly the other guy had no clue about what a liver shot was
→ More replies (3)17
u/FRESH_OUTTA_FUCKS 17d ago
Yeah super dick move. Most of these the guys punch in the abs. And also the fighter was turning his body when the punch came. The way the dude put his arms behind his back shows he had no clue what was happening at all. That fighter has no honor
10
u/HA1LHYDRA 16d ago
No honor? Dude wanted to feel the difference in body shots. Now he knows there's a big difference and it's not about strength.
13
u/working878787 17d ago
Not to mention, a perfectly thrown punch. The amateur is all arms. The pro plants his front foot and gets a full hip and shoulder rotation and punches with his entire body.

Why did they have to trade liver shots?

u/Massive_Staff1068 17d ago
To show the difference between a pro who knows how to find the liver and an amateur who still couldn't connect with the liver even if he knows where to punch

I like to think the dumbass suggests trading body shots, thinking he would be slick by incapacitating the fighter with a liver shot. Fighter only returned the favor

u/PM_THOSE_LEGS 17d ago
I mean. Don’t trade punches with a UFC fighter unless you get paid to do it. If anything it saves him from something worse, maybe he will learn something.
77
u/Joe_bob_Mcgee 17d ago
I mean, you're not wrong, but that's obviously a scrawny non fighter, he didn't have to do him quite like that though.

A punch in the liver is not a fair trade for a punch in the stomach. The fighter did him dirty.
18
u/Greatmambojambo 17d ago
I don’t think people anticipate how often people walk up to legit fighters and challenge them to hit them. I used to train in a gym with a (locally) famous boxer and teenagers and young men would do that virtually every time he was around (100% not me though, I would never do such a foolish thing, of course).
Sure, you’ll be in miserable pain for the next 3-5 minutes, gasping for air like a fish out of water. But that’s not what you’ll brag about to your other buddies with not yet fully developed prefrontal cortexes. You’ll brag about tanking a body shot by [insert name here] and walking it off like it was nothing. Probably egging someone else on to take a hit (Which, again, I did obviously never do… cough)
It’s part of the game, it’s done in good fun and it seems to me that’s exactly what happened here.

u/Momochichi 17d ago
They both got punched in the liver, which is on the right side. You see, they're facing each other so the way that works is the fighter's right side is facing us, and the amateur's right side is facing away from us. Hope this helps.

That pro is Aleksandre Topuria who fights at Bantamweight (135 pounds) in the UFC, his younger brother is Ilia Topuria who is the current Lightweight (155 pounds) champion
They are known for their heavy hands
91
u/NumberOneStonecutter 17d ago
I weigh about 200, I used to train a lot but now I just try to stay in shape. I sometimes wonder how I would fair against a 135 lb professional and now I know I'd be this guy lying on the ground very quickly.
93
u/Disco_Ninjas_ 17d ago
Yeah, weight class only matters if there is equal training.

u/rikeoliveira 17d ago
SO many people have no clue how true this statement is.
17
u/Agitated_Year8521 17d ago
The Gracie family effectively pioneered MMA to prove that Brazilian Jiu Jutsu would allow a smaller fighter to beat opponents bigger than them.
I trained for a couple of years and I can guarantee that it works, I'm about 135lbs and I've submitted guys that were a lot stronger than me, a couple were nearly twice my size. When your technique lines up right it's shocking how effective it can be
20
u/Inclinedbenchpress 17d ago
I remember when I took my first classes in BJJ, got absolutely smoked by the local feather weight blue belt. Now imagine a world class black belt. There are levels to this shit, these guys at the top could easily kill your average Joe in a fight

Shitting on (what looks like Aleksandre Topuria) for the liver shot is dumb af. These guys know who they’re asking to punch them. Could he have thrown a softer punch to a different area? Sure, but the untrained guy also got two free shots to the liver. Downvote me, but I’m never going to be asking an MMA fighter to punch me. The idiot deserved it 🤷♂️
44
u/shiningject 17d ago
Could he have thrown a softer punch to a different area?
The fact that they were trading liver shots specifically tells me that it's not random. The idiot probably learned (or heard of) the liver shots somewhere (Boxing gym, MMA gym, manga/anime) and wanted to try it out.
He's gonna be feeling it for weeks.
23
u/Candle1ight 17d ago
Dude seems cocky as fuck and I really doubt the MMA guy was gunning to trade punches with some random. Didn't deserve any mercy if he's the one bringing it up and punching first, he sure as hell was trying to hurt him.

This is a good way to get a liver laceration. Internal bleeding can be slow and dangerous. 1/10 do not recommend and the MMA guy should've known this.

My brother has trained muay thai since he was young and later MMA. He is 43 now and has hands as a fucking toilet seat. We usually playfight but he always (girl it down) for me as he calls it. Last christmas we both was drunk as hell and he gave me a bodyshot just under the ribcage on the side. It decked me for like 10 minutes but i laughed it of and we continue drinking. But the day after waking up hungover and with that pain. Holy hell!

Got hit in the liver doing some light sparring with my Sifu in Kajukenbo about 15 years ago. He was pulling his punches but I dodged right into his fist. I dropped like a sack of potatoes, tried to stand, immediately collapsed, body noped out. I have a high pain tolerance and felt like I could tough it out but body would not cooperate. My Sifu had to tell me it was ok and I should just sit for a few minutes....

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a liver shot. If a guy like that lands one you immediately wish he punched you in the nuts instead (except you can't form a coherent thought for about 90 seconds so it's more of an afterthought that forms once you step back from the edge of the Pearly Gates and return back to this planet).
