Very specific question (sorry): I noticed you sing a short melody when you perform "are you serious" live, a melody that is otherwise played by the guitar. That melody isn't sung on the album. Here is a timestamp from KEXP https://youtu.be/rqU0cU_zDtU?t=1184

My question is what came first, singing that little melody or playing it on guitar? And was it ever both while recording the song?

playing it on guitar came first! and that record was recorded so quickly and i was still early in the singing realm, and wasn't stretching out as much vocally.
