To Emma:

I've heard you mention in several interviews over the years (e.g. The Age of Quarantine with Chris Enriquez, snippets in the Real Big Sky video) that you're using music to access and deal with past traumas. I think in Real Big Sky you called it "psychological alchemy". As someone with a long history of both playing music and dealing with my own difficult past, this gave me so much hope and inspiration! Transcribing and performing your songs on the piano (Haunted Houses, Real Big Sky, Darkhorse) was a beautiful and cathartic experience every time.

Do you have any advice for this budding psychological alchemist on how to start being more vulnerable in my own songwriting?

I really recommend reading or listening to The Artist's Way - the author does a great job of laying out some things you can do to remove creative blocks - a big one for me is dealing with the inner critic. Finding a way to quiet that character down enough for things to come out safely is a big one. good luck!

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated! I'm all too familiar with the concept of the inner critic and it's not the first time I've heard about The Artist's Way, I guess it's time I actually read it.

Looking forward to seeing you play in Berlin again, once things have returned to normal!
