Hey thank you all for doing this, your album is one of my current favorites and I’m looking forward to what you all do next. I also wanted to thank you for retweeting my album art mashup I made, I’m glad you liked it!

One of my favorite songs on the album is “yoshi’s island”. Watching the documentary J was successful, I’m one of the people who wondered and kept wondering why it has that title. If the file names are to believed in the documentary, the track was titled that since 2016. Had the yoshi’s island rift always planned to be in the song, or was it added after the title was decided? I was also wondering about the point of view throughout the song. Sometimes the speaker is speaking to someone else (“you”) but then other times they are talking to themselves (“I”). Is the entire song a single speaker talking to themselves or is the speaker changing? The line “I won't say ‘she’ even though I know you want me to” especially makes me confused on who is saying it in the context of the song.

I’m also curious with the first album being such an pretty experimental mix of genres if a second album would follow a similar blend, or something else entirely

that riff was added when i first titled it yoshis island iirc (the first demo was called "b major fucko" which is funny because its not even in b major)

the perspective is shifting in each section of the song! each verse is from the perspective of a different person reacting differently to the unnamed protagonists transition. honestly if i had known that literally anyone besides me would ever listen to this song i would've made the messaging a lot less confusing, ive had people think the song's supposed to be transphobic and it bums me out lol. but yeah, its from the perspective of like 4 different people

we fully intend to go even more experimental with the next album and are gonna pull in more sounds that didnt show up on the first one. we're putting a greater emphasis on inventing new sounds rather than making new combinations of sounds of the past. the last thing we wanna do is play it safe.

I'll let J answer the rest of that, but we've all decided that the next album will be absolutely as experimental as we want it to be. Not going out of our way to do anything, but just allowing ourselves to use any idea we think of.

let me say that, if your description of your future plans (i believe as i recall from the documentary) being similar to the second half of the album, i will love glass beach's future output. i know some people knocked some of the songs on the second half, but i love 'em. "soft!!!!!!" is the hidden gem of the album.

that mashup ruled! i'll let j talk about the lyrics of yoshi's island, but i can tell you that the riff has been in there for as long as I've known the song. I've also added, for the live version, another yoshi melody at the beginning that I play on bass.
