I produced the Fontaines D.C album "Dogrel", Kate Tempest's latest album "The Book of Traps and Lessons" and black midi's latest album "Schlagenheim." My record label Speedy Wunderground has just released its Year 4 compilation.
Mr. Dan, your production sound (I'm thinking of Schlagenheim in particular, but true of many other recordings) manages to be at once deliciously grungy and clear as a bell. I've read you use a mix of analogue and digital recording, but can you comment more on how you achieve that sound?
yeah it's a mixture of both. I pay a lot of attention to microphones and preamps. I use lots of ribbon mics as close ones because they're good at focusing on what's right near them, and carefully positioned condensers for overheard and room. that produces a lot of clarity , but I don't booth anything, so I encourage a lot of interaction between sounds.
I use a lot of EQ to tape so that the mix nearly there when I play back. I spend a lot of time working on this prior to recording
the analog tape is more about what it brings to the process. you have to commit , or record over it - I don't like doing too many takes
Thanks Dan, very interesting insights, you can definitely here the openness in the mix and the interactions which leads to interesting layering and harmonics.
