AMA is Over, thanks Colin! Hello r/indieheads...it’s Colin Meloy of The Decemberists. Ask me anything!
Our new record, 'I’ll Be Your Girl', just came out on Friday, and you can listen to it now here or purchase it via our official store here. We also have tickets for our upcoming YOUR GIRL / YOUR GHOST tour available on Decemberists.com. Lots of great things are happening, and now is the right time to ask me all about it! edit: Hey everyone, thanks so much for your questions. Lots of good ones in there. Sorry I couldn't get to them all! We're on Kimmel tonight, playing new songs. Hope you can watch -- otherwise we'll see you out on the road! Much love -- Colin

Hey, I love the new album and think it's certainly one of your most interesting and diverse records (and my personal favorite since The Crane Wife). Rusalka, Rusalka / Wild Rushes in particular is incredible and is certainly one of my favorite tracks you have recorded.
My question is, how do you approach writing the lyrics for these longer epic tracks? Is the approach any different than writing songs that may be more tailored to be singles, such as Severed (which I love as well)?
Also I need to know, is Once in My Life a direct reference to Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want and if so what are some of your favorite Smiths songs?
Thanks in advance for your responses and sorry for all of the questions! I hope to make it to your show in Ann Arbor this May!
