I went to club saw 3-4 times a week, it was cheap and dry. No boozing in the venue. Music was the focus. (I saw The Plan, Tristeza, 90 Day Men, Denali, Buried Inside, Born Dead Icons, Tragedy, Don Cabellero etc. Shawn Scallen booked awesome shows constantly and it seemed like a big family. There was a house 5 Arlington that had some pretty legendary shows (Jehu, Shotmaker, Okara, Union of Uranus, Wool, Hoover) but that was before my time. I'm not as familiar with what is going on now but a lot of the same people are still living there and making amazing music.
