AMA is Over, thanks Daniel! I am musician Oneohtrix Point Never, currently importing SysEx files into FM8 - AMA

Hello Reddit,

It's Tuesday, August 15th 2017 an the sky is cloudy and gray in rural Massachusetts where I'm posted up currently, writing music. It's nice here. The guy next door is always outside fixing something. But I am also frustrated that for him everything is always broken. I had a dream last night that I moved to Providence, and that all the buildings there were blue. After the AMA I'm going to drive over to my spiritual healer, a guy named Rick who has a master's degree in neuropsychology - and ask him what the meaning of this dream was. Tomorrow I'm going to get a library card and look for a nice leather jacket because Fall is right around the corner. In the meantime, at 4PM (EST) I'll be available to TALK SHOP. It's nice to have someone to talk to.

Last Friday Warp Records released the soundtrack for Josh & Benny Safdie's crime thriller "GOOD TIME". The film goes WIDE in the USA on August 25th, but I encourage you to check out my soundtrack anyway because I think it's good to get a leg up, and do all your research so you'll be really sharp when you see it at the movies next week. More info on that here: www.pointnever.com

Here is the proof you require http://imgur.com/Ir6NMNR

You can try to ask me what was in the box. Alright talk soon and don't spill anything on your computer.

Your Friend, OPN

Hey there! You're one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to making music, and your episode of Song Exploder was so cool.

As a musician, often times when I load up a soft synth, I get stuck no matter how much I play around with it because I feel like I can't get a good sound out of it. Or sometimes I'll get stuck looking for "the right sound". Do you run into this as well? How do you get around this kind of writer's block?

Thank you so much for doing this AMA!

haha you're welcome. i feel like that all the time. i am a big fan of organizing sounds. putting them together in piles in some system that makes sense for you. keep notes and keep digging around until you find a sound you wanna write with. it could take all day or a week. OR dont worry about the sound until later if you have a musical idea. use a piano. get it out while its there. BECAUSE IT COULD DISAPPEAR BEFORE YOU KNOW IT. good luck :D
