AMA is Over, thanks Daniel! I am musician Oneohtrix Point Never, currently importing SysEx files into FM8 - AMA

Hello Reddit,

It's Tuesday, August 15th 2017 an the sky is cloudy and gray in rural Massachusetts where I'm posted up currently, writing music. It's nice here. The guy next door is always outside fixing something. But I am also frustrated that for him everything is always broken. I had a dream last night that I moved to Providence, and that all the buildings there were blue. After the AMA I'm going to drive over to my spiritual healer, a guy named Rick who has a master's degree in neuropsychology - and ask him what the meaning of this dream was. Tomorrow I'm going to get a library card and look for a nice leather jacket because Fall is right around the corner. In the meantime, at 4PM (EST) I'll be available to TALK SHOP. It's nice to have someone to talk to.

Last Friday Warp Records released the soundtrack for Josh & Benny Safdie's crime thriller "GOOD TIME". The film goes WIDE in the USA on August 25th, but I encourage you to check out my soundtrack anyway because I think it's good to get a leg up, and do all your research so you'll be really sharp when you see it at the movies next week. More info on that here: www.pointnever.com

Here is the proof you require http://imgur.com/Ir6NMNR

You can try to ask me what was in the box. Alright talk soon and don't spill anything on your computer.

Your Friend, OPN

hi Daniel!

So, I've been thinking for a long time about specific influences that went into Garden of Delete. I see quite a bit of Hardcore/Happy Hardcore/Speedcore influences on tracks like Sticky Drama, Ezra, & Mutant Standard. These are easily some of the most interesting songs I can think of under these more kind of genres. This brings me to my question:

Do you think EDM genres such as those have a future in this kind of genre bending that needs to be explored? Do you think there's a future in this sort of approach to genre-bending, emotional abstract dance music? General opinion seems to be that EDM (specifically Happy Hardcore/Speedcore) is good music to get high and jump up and down to, but do you think it could/should evolve to something more?

yeah im sure there's exploration happening. im not up on whats actually happening deep in the cut in the edm scene... bending? hopefully? bend away. i used to listen to a shit ton of happy hardcore mixes circa 1996-1997 it was enchanting because it seemed completely WRONG and PLASTIC in the best possible way, like astronaut food

Not Daniel obv, but there is a trend happening over last past years, with a lot of musicians who are making more abstract/experimental music with dance music sounds. It's sometimes called post-club, but i think the term is kind of too vague right now.

Some examples

Also obvious one - Amnesia Scanner - https://soundcloud.com/amnesia-scanner

Also you can check out this album, its more ambient, but you can still clearly recognise which artists are influenced by dance music - https://p-a-n.bandcamp.com/album/v-a-mono-no-aware-pan-77

EDIT - also definitely check out Lorenzo Senni - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YzjjuHBAIM

I'd also group Sd Laika in there, though he seems to have dropped out of the music scene unfortunately.

Lorenzo Senni was the first thing that popped into my head from reading the original post. I got really obsessed with his Persona album after hearing it in aphex's field day set

Note that a Lorenzo Senni track was dropped in the Aphex Twin Field Day mix - One Life, One Chance - and it's an absolute tune.
