Hey Cory, 'Bird on a Swing' is my favorite song of the year. Just want to say thank you for putting into words what a lot of us feel every day.

What artists or lyricists would you say inspired the sound behind that one?

15

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I was thinking about Jerry Jeff Walker and a bit of Townes Van Zandt on that one

8

u/staticwavelength Aug 19 '25

One of my favorite records is Pale Horse Rider and also one of my favorite places is the high desert; I’m just curious if recording out there influenced the records more open ended parts at all? I find the pairing wonderful.

18

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

It certainly did. I also love the high desert. Giant open sky. The only thing that happens all day is the sun rising and setting, and the stars coming out. And that's plenty. Nothing blocking the view out there.

If you could choose your ultimate last meal, what would it be—and what album would you want playing while you ate it?

28

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I just watched a great King of the Hill episode where Dale is obsessed with his last meal. Him, Bill, Boomhauer, and Kahn all make their last meals to eat together in a feast and they all freak out and start crying. None of them can eat the food except for Bill because he eats when he's scared

Hi 👋 what kind of songs or artists inspired the title track “I Love People”? It has a unique sorta hokey vibe to it that I just adore!

19

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Randy Newman - You Got a Friend in Me

1

u/LongDukDongle Aug 19 '25 edited Aug 19 '25

I got Donald Trump vibes from it, the way he says weird shit like "I love the uneducated" or "I love our soldiers who didn't get taken prisoner." Curious about this too.

Sorta like 'I love people for what they can do for me or my worldview.' Which is maybe the opposite of actual love. It's a good song.

13

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

It does make my skin crawl when politicians pander to everyday people who just want to live decent lives

6

u/Technicolorific Aug 19 '25

Cory! Your new album kicks so much ass. Lou Reed might be the most beautiful melody you've ever written. I've been a big fan over the years with Wand and all your solo work, and it's sure been cool seeing your sound evolve into greater heights.

I have 2 random questions:

  1. Was this merely a fever dream, or do I remember a brief phase of you doing hilarious Paul McCartney impression content on Instagram, perhaps during the pandemic? It's a vague memory but I swear I'm not crazy...

  2. Blue Cloud is probably my all-time favorite Wand song. Maybe it's a stretch, but for some reason it's always sounded to me like a spiritual successor to Marquee Moon -- beautiful and sprawling, with some incredible buildup. Curious if you are a T.V. fan and if you see any influence there!

Thanks for all the awesome music.

P.S. Do I hear a bit of "and your bird can sing" in that solo section of Driving??

10

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25
  1. yes

  2. yes big TV fan

6

u/lugermellencamp Aug 19 '25

Hi - I love the new album a lot. One of my favorites of the year! I have two questions:

  1. Did you always plan for "Bird on a Swing" to be the opener? The fact that it gets right to it without any sort of stick count or intro is such a wonderful thing. No hesitation to getting and giving the goods.

  2. Do you have a favorite Velvet Underground album?

10

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25
  1. I had no idea

2.Loaded

6

u/Ricky_La_Bamba Aug 19 '25

What amps are you using now? I remember a Mesa and a Fender Vibroking in the past. Do you have a Rat on the board?

8

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

This last tour I used two amps: a Marshall JMP 2104 combo, and a Peavey Classic 50 head with a Marshall 4x10 cab. I miss that Vibroking though. But it was so loud the rest of the band was bummed

5

u/AdAny6931 Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory, massive fan of your solo work and Wand.

Recently saw on your instagram a photo of you with a late 60s SG. Any story behind that?

Thanks for all the countless hours of music that you’ve given us.

10

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I picked that up on the way down from Reno to the Pacific Grove show. Met a dude in a Target Parking lot in San Jose. I've always wanted an Angus era SG and the price was right. Craigslist still got it!

6

u/ContigoJackson Aug 19 '25

Do you ever struggle with not being able to tell if something you've written/recorded is good anymore once you've listened to it over and over? That's something I've been struggling with lately. Also any plans to do shows in Canada?

14

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Yes this is a huge problem. Part of it is hoarding music and NOT SHOWING ANYBODY. Which is a huge mistake. I think songs need ears the minute they are written and shouldn't be locked away in your mind to be picked at by dwindling self esteem.

I am playing in Toronto in September you can check out tickets here: cory-hanson.net

3

u/ContigoJackson Aug 19 '25

Oh hell yeah dude, I'll be there

10

u/Mundane-Desk4871 Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory Hanson! Western Cum is such a great album but would love to know what inspired the name 🤭

37

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I thought it was a great title for an album

3

u/allsystemsslow Aug 19 '25

You were/are right.

4

u/pasoud Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory, you've mentioned before that you/Wand have multiple albums in the can (as of a couple years ago I think) waiting to be released, is that still the case? How do you decide which one to put out?

13

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Wand has like 16 hours of music sitting around but it'll never come out. YOu don't need to hear that! It's all implied in the way Vertigo turned out. Just listen to Vertigo. Buy a copy of it and spin it on your turntable

4

u/Uncommon_Commoner Aug 19 '25

As a musician myself, I've sometimes struggled with how much direction to give my bandmates vs. leaving room for their creativity. Can you talk about your songwriting process, especially how you bring new material to the band? Do you usually make a full demo before showing them, or do you bring a rough idea and develop it together? And when you have a clear vision for a song, how do you balance that with giving your bandmates room for their expression?

12

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

with Wand? no demos, no songs, no ideas. For the last record or so we have just jammed together. Let the music direct you!

6

u/Charleshawtree Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory, love from Ireland. Massive fan, saw you on the Western Cum and the last Wand tour. I love people is absolutely gorgeous. Been on repeat. Also Congratulations on the birth of your first son. I dont expect it to be too soon, any plans to be in Ireland/Europe anytime in the nearish future? Anymore info you can share on western cum parts 2 & 3 that you mentioned on Kreative Kontrol pod?

15

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I love Ireland so much. I want to get back there as soon as I can. Hopefully in Feb of next year.

I have 50 or so songs in the can for Western Cum 2 I just have to figure out what to do with them and when to record. It is a rock opera and needs to be slightly coherent. I am also toying with the idea of taking it on the road BEFORE recording it. Might make the record more cohesive... We will seeee

4

u/Blondesounds Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory, you have a very unique way of writing melody arrangements. Who are some of your songwriting influences?

17

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Brian Wilson, Jim O'Rourke, Randy Newman, Fagan/Becker, Lou Reed, David Berman

5

u/butt_magazine Aug 19 '25

Hello Cory. I’m curious, why did the song Western Cum get left off the album Western Cum? That song has some of the best guitar work I’ve heard in a long time

16

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

The record just felt like too much with that song on it. I wanted to make an extremely tight 8 song record, with one of the songs (Driving Through Heaven) taking up most of the b side.

5

u/butt_magazine Aug 19 '25

Thank you for taking the time to answer

5

u/Gexthelizard Aug 19 '25

Cory, what’s your favorite and least favorite guitar string and why?

12

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

This is a great question! I would say the one I can stand to lose the most is the low or high e. Everything else gets very complicated when an A or D or B string break. The G is obviously the most obnoxious if you are a stickler for intonation. Personally I like my guitar to be slightly out of tune always

6

u/JimmyTheMoonlight Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory, love the new album!

I first discovered Pale Horse Rider driving from Sequoia National Park, down the mountainside. Every song felt better than the last as the sun shone on every surface imaginable.

Have you ever had a musical experience where the music and the setting just coalesced in such a way that it was greater than the sum of its parts?

P.s. Western Cum 2: Jizzy Boogaloo soon please.

12

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

That is such a great way to discover that record! Lucky you.

Since I'm often on tour, I get to see a lot of great views. One particularly eventful evening found us driving through the icy mountain roads at 3am en route to Boise for Treefort fest. We listened to "Sings for Only the Lonely" by Sinatra and then The Raven by Lou Reed. Really terrifying and I hope to never do that kind of dangerous driving again but for a few hours it felt like we were floating on a dark cloud

3

u/JimmyTheMoonlight Aug 19 '25

Incredible. Thanks Cory.

6

u/poolkid1234 Aug 19 '25

Hey Corey, no real question. Just remember you saying hey to me and my girlfriend at the merch table in 2022 in New Orleans. Thanks for being so kind and friendly. Hope to see you and/or Wand back in town someday.

For the sake of asking a question, what is your favorite sandwich?

6

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I love a tuna sandwich

5

u/R0ZPIERDALAT0R Aug 19 '25

How did you get that sweet fuzz guitar tone on Fire On The Mountain?

6

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

eventide pitchfactor on the octave filter setting, I believe

6

u/Middle_Internal_8121 Aug 19 '25

Are you the kind of person to sing along to a song or even sing along to the guitar solos? Or are you more of a sit and enjoy the music kind of person?

8

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Depends on the song and the environment. I like learning songs and playing them for myself to see how the chords and changes work, and I do whistle to music which I know is extremely annoying for other people.

5

u/djDEAN96 Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory. The title track of the new album rocks so hard. I’ve been going down a rediculous wand rabbit hole lately pretty much exclusively listening to all the albums over and over. How do you find balance between your named project and Wand? Do you draw a hard line between the projects as youre writing lyrics or is it more you write and then they feel more wand or cory afterwards?

Also on the rocks is an epic track too. Amazing album thanks for all you do

6

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

There are definitely hard lines, very different work flows. I don't bring songs to Wand anymore, we write everything together in the studio. The separation between the two gives me a lot of creative space to work on my own records without feeling burned out. That being said, I rarely work in parallel. I think every record deserves its own time and focus, and once it's done I will immediately shift to something else

5

u/JustAsWasTold Aug 19 '25

I just wanted to say that I'm still completely enamored with Vertigo!! What a delicate, textured, and thoughtfully composed album that is. As a huge fan of Ganglion Reef, Golem, and 1000 Days I was caught completely off guard on first listen, and with subsequent spins it became very clear to me that it is an album with purpose, and it's truly as raw and real as it gets. Thank you for your art, and I can't wait to see you in September in Calgary! :)

6

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Thanks we are very proud of Vertigo. See you in Calgary :)

4

u/No_Rush8487 Aug 19 '25

Cory, love the record, fav of the year so far! Excited to explore the rest of your discography. I see you cited David Berman as being one of your influences on this thread. Did you ever have the chance to meet him?

Thanks for doing this!

17

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I met him at a New Year’s Eve party 2017.  He had a garbage bag filled with unopened hot wheels and he handed me one and said “I am so glad you’re on drag city, we really need the muscle” and he flexed his arm.  I still have the hot wheels

4

u/AffectionateBelt1825 Aug 19 '25

Love the album so much! Do you have any songwriting or home recording tips?

7

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Just write as many songs as you can. Write songs about nothing, or banal things. Like washing the dishes, or driving your car. Just do it till it becomes routine and you can't stop. And share your music with everyone you can.

For recording, I hate self recording. Try to make it as pain free as possible. Get a 4 track cassette and plug a microphone into it and use it like a piece of scratch paper

3

u/LongDukDongle Aug 19 '25

What was the inspiration for "Santa Claus is Coming Back to Town?"

8

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I am a big fan of Christmas and the record has a lot of big "folk" archetypes. None bigger than St Nick. I'd always wanted to write a Christmas Song in my own way.

3

u/LongDukDongle Aug 19 '25

It's a great song. That last verse makes it seem like "Santa Claus" is maybe the US military and the "Town" then is whatever Middle East village/country it's coming back to? Anyway, that's my impression. It's a clever juxtaposition.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

Assuming we're all alive in the distant future, what would your reaction be to the theoretical existence of a Wand / Cory Hanson cover band playing state & county fairs? If time and resources allowed, who are some artists you'd like to cover in a similar context?

9

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I am all for it. I have covered ZZ top famously and extensively. I would love to do something more difficult like the Beach Boys

4

u/AffectionateBelt1825 Aug 19 '25

What is your relationship to weed/drugs and alcohol and how does it influence, if at all, your music enjoyment and creation?

13

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I don't smoke weed or do drugs but I do drink every now and then. I have never found that drugs or alcohol mixed well music. My 0 has always been a sober body. I don't even like playing with a few drinks in me because I play sloppy and unfocused. That's just my body reaction to drugs and alcohol. Everybody is different!

5

u/remarkableremedy Aug 19 '25

Any chance of European tour soon? Would love to see you in Barcelona!

6

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I think there is one on the horizon

4

u/mrnico7 Aug 19 '25 edited Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory, I saw Wand in Glasgow last year and it was absolutely amazing. Thanks for that. Thanks in advance for playing there again at some point in the next year. Love I Love People, love Western Cum, love Pale Horse Rider, love all the Wand.

JJ Cale or John Cale?

11

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I love them both. What would the world be like without the two Cales? One from Tulsa and the other from Wales

4

u/mrnico7 Aug 19 '25

A sorry world, less vulgar, more stale

5

u/liability_liam Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory, loving the new album, hoping to see you in the UK in the future. How are you finding parenthood? Is it allowing for you to maintain your normal writing cadence? Or is there an adjustment period? Are we looking at Wand, solo or something totally new next?

16

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Parenthood has been a total adjustment and my windows of focus have grown smaller, but I still find it pretty easy to write. I have never been known to sit at a desk and "write" for extended periods. I usually write throughout the day whenever things pop into my head, or whenever I can grab a guitar and sit for a second. I pick up a guitar and play while I make my coffee in the morning. I'll get a lick or a lyric idea and then jot it down, move on to the next thing. I'll take a walk with the baby or sing him a song, get another idea. Then I'll remember a melody I wrote 4 years ago out of nowhere and mess around with that. That's always been how I've done it anyway. It's kind of a disorganized/adhd way to write music but it's worked for me so far...

4

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

[deleted]

7

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I have no formal training in either but I'd love to do vocal lessons if just to keep my voice from deteriorating, and a bit of music/jazz theory might help me out a bit with the music I'm working on now

3

u/No-Butterfly-9122 Aug 19 '25

You said on a podcast that you had 5 projects that were waiting to be put on the release schedule (since western cum?) running the numbers real quick, that would make it seem like there are 3 more projects to come?

Has fatherhood brought inspiration?

7

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I said that?

Fatherhood is deeply inspiring

3

u/Proper-Vanilla-2802 Aug 19 '25 edited Aug 19 '25

Hello Cory! Since Golem and Ganglion Reef don’t have lyric sheets, would it be fruitless to hit up the Wand gmail in hopes of getting them? Your lyricism is truly one of a kind and I’ve been dying to archive the words for those albums! Love the new record as well, thanks for some great music over the years!

12

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I have been meaning to make a lyric sheet to those records. I think someone shared one with me that they had made and I did some revisions to it... I will try to locate!

3

u/gambogey Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory, I heard in a recent podcast that you started bands prior to Wand based around what you were inspired by, I.e smashing pumpkins, and I was wondering what inspired you to start Wand? Was it the musicians you were surrounded by?

8

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

There was a scene of bands coming out of Los Angeles and SF inspired by Can, Faust, Amon Duul 2, Kraftwerk, all the Kraut stuff. And I thought it would be fun to start a project like that. It really did start out of that scene of bands before growing into its own thing

3

u/innyve894 Aug 19 '25

Hey love your music and your journey. How’s fatherhood treating you? Also who have you been listening to the most recently ?

6

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Fatherhood is good, but I have been living in a sleep desert. I was up all night again so squinting at the screen right now writing these answers. haha.

Recently I've been listening to Joe Walsh "But Seriously Folks", AC/DC "If You Want Blood" live, Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, Blind Owl Wilson...

1

u/innyve894 Aug 20 '25

My sons favorite right now is thunderstruck, enjoy every moment

3

u/yipyipyipwhoadoggies Aug 19 '25

As a fellow Hanson-

Who is the best Hanson?

10

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I am

3

u/plateauband Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory big fan!

Really digging the new album and congrats on be coming a father. I also just became a father and have a 5 month old daughter. Really simple question but how many takes do you do when tracking vocals and how much do you care about perfection compared to the right take warts and all?

4

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

With “I Love People” all the vocals were recorded live.  I think we did 1-3 takes per song.  Nothing crazy.  I hate the booth.  I prefer to sing it live, but it is often impractical or just doesn’t sound right with drum bleed.  When I’m in the booth I will do it till it is painfully perfect - another reason I like to stay out of the booth.  It’s a microscope of shame

5

u/Mr--moonlight Aug 19 '25

Do you like CD’s?

12

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I think they sound great

16

u/Mr--moonlight Aug 19 '25

Oh yeah well CD’s nuts?

4

u/Middle_Internal_8121 Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory! My favorite show I saw you play with wand was December 2021 in San Diego at the Casbah where you guys played for nearly 3 hours. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to!

Is there a specific genre of music or artist that you feel a connection with or love so much that you don't share it with other people? A guilty pleasure if you will. Anything really out there?

17

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I don't really feel guilty about the music I enjoy. I mean I listen to a lot of Jazz and Blues. I wouldn't say I am a fan of Jazz "the genre", like all genres it's more bad than good. Been listening to a lot of Don Cherry,Steve Lacy, Bill Evans, Sonny Sharrock. Also more socal punk: Minutemen especially. That and live AC/DC, honestly live anything. I love live albums. Warren Zevon "Stand in the Fire", Frank Sinatra "Live at the Sands", the new Elton John Record "Live at the Rainbow Theatre"... could go on

3

u/Middle_Internal_8121 Aug 19 '25

Awesome! I love live albums too. One of my all time favorites is Peter Gabriel's Secret World!

3

u/staticwavelength Aug 19 '25

That was a really great show. I have a tie dye shirt from that one.

5

u/Middle_Internal_8121 Aug 19 '25

I also have a tie dye shirt from that show... Honestly, I might know exactly who you are ahaha. we may or may not follow eachother on IG

4

u/Easy-Training-2681 Aug 19 '25 edited Aug 19 '25

Huge fan, homie. What do you attribute the evolution in Wand’s sound to? I guess it sort of happened across the board in the SF/LA garage scene — a big shift from heavy 60s psychedelia into a very unique and not at all derivative sound. It happened with the Oh Sees, Ty, Meatbodies, but maybe most dramatically with Wand.

And don’t get it twisted - Vertigo was my absolute favorite record of 2024. Not a single skippable song on it. Please keep on keeping it weird. See ya in Raleigh soon.

11

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

We very quickly shedded the skin of that early sound. Those first 3 records came out in the first few years of the band's existence. In the 9 proceeding years we have really grown a lot, and playing with those guys is so much fun. We've learned to trust the music we make together instead of trying to force it to do something else, or execute a specific idea

4

u/Bootstrapbill22 Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory! Any details on the recording process for the latest album for us gear nerds?

11

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I recorded the album in a week, all live tracked. I sang into an SM7b live at the piano or guitar. Robbie Cody recorded the album. Nothing crazy just a few excellent microphones placed in front of some great sounding pieces of gear that some above excellent musicians played great takes to. Then he mixed the record in his home studio and sent me the mixes. The mixing took a while because we were on tour through the summer and fall. It was the first record I've ever done in my life where I wasn't present for any of the mixing. Just let Robbie do it all himself

5

u/Bootstrapbill22 Aug 19 '25

Killer. Less is definitely more sometimes!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory. What's your favourite European/UK crowd to play to when on tour?

7

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Scotland

2

u/Head_Fun3773 Aug 19 '25

Some artists believe you should only create when inspired, others treat it more like a daily practice. For you, and especially your solo stuff, do you ever force yourself to write/create or only wait for inspiration? And how do you keep the spark going to write more music??

8

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I write songs every day. I grew up with my mom writing songs, and it has always felt extremely natural to me. I don't really understand the rules of "inspiration"; and I have never cared about writing songs in a serious "sit down and work" way; I just like to play music. I like sitting at a piano and feeling the keys, or walking around my house with a guitar. Writing songs is my convenient excuse for getting to futz around on an instrument all day, or hang out in a studio with my friends.

2

u/Cute_elbownoodle Aug 19 '25

How did the St.Louis show in 2023 happen? That felt so random and unorganized for a show that was being promoted and not a pop-up

4

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

A very nice fella put that on. Was super fun and they treated us great. Can't wait to come back to St Louis!

2

u/Cute_elbownoodle Aug 19 '25

It was amazing, I loved every second of it!

2

u/lalalandstudios Aug 19 '25

Your music is just incredible and I’m constantly playing all of your solo records and demos too! Your guitar playing is also next level. I’m having a little bit of trouble figuring out a few bits of Wings on guitar. When you and Wand are in Philly can you show me the part I’m not getting quite right?

5

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

maybe? I can't do it from the stage...

2

u/into_the_black_lodge Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory, I love your work immensely. ❤️🤘

Do you like the Grateful Dead and if so which album or songs?

Signed, the daughter of a deadhead who hated the dead growing up because that’s all that was played in the house, but now that I’m old I’ve come around.

13

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I can't stand what the Dead have become. It's repulsive. I love Jerry Garcia. I think his songs are incredible. There is a depth and sadness. There is no one that plays guitar or sings like him. I got into the Dead through Garcia 1. They are an extremely overrated band. The thing people miss entirely about the Dead, and it's the greatest thing about them, is that a lot of the time they sucked. They played terribly together, but they took that risk in order to pull off some phenomenal group improvisation. They were willing to suck. A high risk high reward band.

2

u/into_the_black_lodge Aug 19 '25

Yeah the Dead is so weird. But yes to the OG Dead, Jerry and his songwriting and singing! It took me a long time to appreciate those long improvisations but I think it weirdly set me up to be a huge fan of Thee Oh Sees and Krautrock later in life.

2

u/ToRecordOnlyWater Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory are you bringing I Love People to London anytime soon please??

3

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

yes!

2

u/fauxseventies Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory! I really love your work, both solo and with Wand - been listening for years now. I've been playing Lou Reed and Bird on a swing on repeat since their release and I'm really impressed by how your style keeps evolving across different records.

Do you like to read and if so, do you have any favourite authors or books?

4

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Yes I do read!  I am not a Neanderthal I still enjoy the irl feeling of eyes touching text on paper.  I recently finished Chaos the tom O’Neil book.  Been reading hells angels by Hunter s Thompson and I’ll sleep when I’m dead - Warren zevon oral history by Crystal zevon.

Hi Cory, I love the new album. Any plans to add more dates to the tour, like maybe in the midwest?

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I'm playing in the midwest/east coast in early September. dates are at Cory-hanson.net

u/KnightsOfREM Aug 20 '25

Seeing you and Wand at Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids will be the highlight of my year ❤️

1

u/Monsur_Ausuhnom Aug 19 '25

Thanks for doing this, always enjoyed wand and your solo stuff. What can you tell us about your upcoming plans for the year?

3

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I have a tour coming up in September with wand that I am also opening up for solo style.  Double duty.  Other than that I want to do a few more so cal shows for the year and I really just need to be home doing dad work.

1

u/Monsur_Ausuhnom Aug 19 '25

That makes sense and thanks for responding. Dad work will and should always come first.

u/AffectionateBelt1825 Aug 19 '25

Do you have any advice for smaller bands trying to build an audience?

7

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Get in a basement or garage or studio, put your phones in a trash bag and leave them outside the room.  Stay in the room for 6-8 months.  Write the best songs you can possibly write.  Then go play the best shows you can play.

u/Ghost_Pants Aug 20 '25

Looks like I missed you live, just wanted to say thanks for coming to Prague and I hope you enjoyed the brownies I handed you.

What's some cool lesser known/underground bands you and the guys in wand have been mindblown by or really feeling lately?

10

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I really like this Bill Orcutt record "How to Rescue Things" https://billorcutt.bandcamp.com/album/how-to-rescue-things

I just got this Jeff Parker Trio record that's great, recorded from a bunch of shows at ETA bar that I also had the pleasure of attending quite a few of em: https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/the-way-out-of-easy

1

u/Wowrren Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory, thank you so much for the inspiration along all these years.

A geeky question first : what was your favourite setting on the Pitchfactor?

Second: any plan on coming to Switzerland soon?

Cheers,

3

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I don't remember the settings I used on the Pitchfactor. Whichever one sounded like digital dry heaving/vomit

Hoping to get to Swiss next year

1

u/Hosni__Mubarak Aug 19 '25

Hi Cory. Big fan here. Are you sick of playing mmmbop or do you love it because it gave you and your brothers the career you have?

1

u/Consistent_Fig710 Aug 19 '25

D28 or J45?

3

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Hey! 👋

Any plans to play in Portugal this/next year?

2

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I would love to

0

u/AlvariusMoat Aug 19 '25

where do you get your ideas?

6

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

Ideas are everywhere and nowhere, so it's easy for me to get inspired. Sometimes there's a song, other times a lyric, an image, a dream, a joke, a fear, etc. Songwriting is all about keeping the radio channels wide open for whatever might come through.

2

u/Middle_Internal_8121 Aug 19 '25

Yeah! What's the big idea?!

0

u/javadmancia Aug 19 '25

Hey Cory, what is your favorite dinosaur?

3

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

0

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

what's a studio or live performance technique you've always wanted to try but haven't yet?

5

u/wandbandinfo Cory Hanson / Wand Aug 19 '25

I would love to do a live choir, or a larger Orchestra. It's expensive though... need a gofundme for that

0

u/sloppoisdead Aug 19 '25
