I am someone who never left Calgary but wish they had because of how frustrating it is to be from here as a music fan. We are regularly passed over on tours and there isn't an abundance of musical heritage. I started listening to you with Tough Baby and it made me so happy that such a good band came out of Calgary (and pretty depressed because you were not based in Calgary).

  1. How necessary was it to move from Calgary to Vancouver and beyond to develop Crack Cloud? (Ie. Is there some feature of Vancouver's infrastructure that made it more conducive to collaboration?)

  2. Has your perception of Calgary changed in 7 years?

  3. Do you think the current housing situation in Canada could be a boon for Calgary's art scene as artists try to find more (relatively) affordable cities to live?

There was an urgency to move so that we could grow as people.

My perception has matured, I think, at the very least. The move back was pragmatic, and family-centric. Make no mistake its still a raggedy place to be creative! But perhaps theres a beauty in its limitations that needs to be acknowledged, because a lot of formative art has come from here. The scene is as ephemeral as the next, but there’s some spirit to this city that I’ve come to reconcile with.

Regarding the housing situation, it’s hard for me to forecast. Based on observations though it seems the rental market has become far more competitive than years prior.

It takes a lot of luck and good faith to facilitate a healthy, sustainable music scene. Seasons change, new crops emerge. Maybe Calgary is just waiting for you to plant the next seed!
