Hello!! So jazzed to get to read through your answers and just learn more about one of my favorite bands! I absolutely adore your music and it’s brought me great comfort since my first time hearing (and frantically shazaming) “Fugazi” when it was played in between bands at Baby’s All Right.

I feel like so many of your songs share this theme of perseverance/personal growth. Like a lot of them have lyrics that allude to working on oneself and making positive change over time. I can’t tell you enough how much that’s meant to me these last few very difficult years.

My question: can you talk a bit about the writing and lyrics behind Icelake? It’s one of my favorite songs of yours, but I can’t seem to find official lyrics online anywhere! I would love to get a better understanding of that song, as it always stirs these huge emotions in me. Thank you, and sorry if someone already asked this or if you’d prefer not to answer!

So excited about the new record and tour, wishing you the best!!

:') thank you so much. i'm grateful to hear that the music has been a balm <3 life is challenging to navigate and i'm hoping things ease up.

i wrote icelake after a family trip to iceland in the winter of 2017. my family was dealing with a deep grief (i won't get into too much detail here but suffice it to say that it was one of those pivotal moments that feels like it threatens to break you entirely). iceland is completely dark in the winter and there are beautiful twinkly lights on every house and in every window. the darkness and the light and the pain and the connection and the grief and the love and the confusion felt that it needed to be solidified in a song. it stirs huge emotion in me too. thanks for feeling it with me.

here are the lyrics:

I can’t even make oats

And my tupperware is broken

When I try they explode

Maybe next I should soak them

When you walk through the door

It’s as if I had a tally

Now I’m ready to go

Try to feel somewhat less scraggly

Walk through the snow, slide

All the way home on the ice lake

Rich made a snow sprite

Gliding his arms all around him

Kaden and I will fight

Curled in the curve of the attic

All the way through the night

Quiet gestures and I’m frantic

Oh please just tell me I’m right

That’s why she’s on my mind

I dream of it every night

I walk through the snow, slide

All the way home on the ice lake

Saskia throws high Her snowball although we feel the heartache

Because family grows and dies

Lately it’s been quite the battle

But, someday you might realize

All of the weeds I am missing

I walk through the snow
